WipeoutHD is not stress free but I find it relaxing, weirdly.

kind of waiting for the inevitable $5 steam sale on that one

trine is... ok. played it once, never felt the urge to go back.

If Planes Could Fly This Place Would Be an Airport (s1ocki), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Trine is pretty good, but I haven't gotten to the last level (which is widely alleged to be a bucket of nutsacks) yet. I gameshared it tho, so it was only ~6 bucks.

<3 The Show and Skate even if the learning curve on both is damn near vertical. Demon's Souls is simultaneously palpably essential and emphatically not for everyone (this is part of what makes it great); make sure you at least give it a rent. Valkyiria Chronicles is both a mindfuckingly gigantic ton of fun and be purty. the PSN will send you to the poorhouse; start off with Warhawk, Crash Commando, Wipeout HD, Critter Crunch, Inferno Pool, Pixeljunk Monsters (motherfuk Eden, this is The One), Flower, Shatter, Uno, and probably some others. also biggest protip ever: spend $5 and get a set of those trigger clips for your controller.

if you're looking for racing games, I would go for Motorstorm: Pacific Rift before anything else, even Wipeout HD or Burnout Paradise (both of which I love dearly); it occupies the precise midpoint between the former's unchecked HD arcade craziness and the latter's sprawling openness, and then tops both of them with some of the best uses of vehicle classes in gaming history. I think it's cheap now too.

okamadablobisney (jamescobo), Thursday, 12 November 2009 04:00 (fourteen years ago) link

ha i don't think i've played a racing game since the days of the C64, the idea just isn't very interesting to me. maybe i'll try wipeout though since everyone loves it

played around with skate a little bit yesterday, the controls are confusing at first but it seems like it'll be awesome once they get more intuitive

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 November 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Where the hell do you get those trigger clips? On Ebay everyone selling them is either in the UK or Australia. Am I just searching wrong?

antexit, Thursday, 12 November 2009 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

is it absurd to want to buy another ps3 (slim) for the bedroom? was going to buy a blu-ray player but why not be able to play ps3 from my bed while my roommate is hogging the other console?

cutty, Thursday, 12 November 2009 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

might as well get one for your bathroom while you're at it

how else would you "update" your "system" to perform that function

There was some other (useless) stuff in the update too besides the photo thing, they added facebook integration (I think you can link your accounts in account management, but please don't), and they changed the way your friend's list displays (instead of everybody being listed in grey boxes, just the one you highligh is now, anyway, I think that's how it's different). You can also change the color of your profile. WOOP!

you have it for a week but only 24 hours from when you first press play.

no 5.1 support for the HD downloads.

Are the new PS3 slims any quieter than the original? I'm going to be in the market to buy a blu-ray system (to watch the one blu-ray film I own) and kind of like the PS3, although not enough to have bought one. I think I'd buy Wipeout HD and Flow on the online store. Totally worth it, right?

mh, Thursday, 26 November 2009 04:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't compare them to the original, but mine is basically silent.

also yeesh, time has not been kind to GoW1. boring combat + jarringly shitty cutscenes + hilariously stereotypical mid-century "mature games" indulgences =/= a good time.

like I imagine a bunch of Sony executives yelling THIS GAME NEEDS THIRTY PERCENT MORE TITTIES. it feels like a very Poochie-esque move on the developers part.

Poking around the various places on the internet, it sure looked like reactions were incredibly negative, with many people echoing my general feeling that, if Sony cares so little about preserving their legacy IP, I don't see myself buying any later gen Sony consoles in the future. So this is heartening!

vita isnt even a decade old yet. that's like if they discontinued the ps4 store next year

ciderpress, Monday, 19 April 2021 18:33 (three years ago) link

They've literally released new (shitty-looking, but still) Vita games on the PSN store in 2021.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 April 2021 18:36 (three years ago) link

shocked that Sony actually paid attention! there must've been a surge of buying.

Nhex, Monday, 19 April 2021 18:37 (three years ago) link

Based on that blog post and what was discussed in a recent AMA with a former Playstation employee, it sounds like this decision all came down to not wanting to maintain whatever form of payment verification they maintain on the PS3/Vita side of the store. I guess if users have demonstrated that it's worthwhile to maintain, Sony is willing to eat the cost and manpower.

It was all just seems so stupid anyway. I get generally miffed when people/big corporate entities just sit on IP instead of releasing it to the public but doubly so when it's freakin' digital media. If you don't have to deal with the infrastructure of manufacturing/storing physical copies of a thing, the costs of making it accessible have to be minimal for a company of that size. Like you either keep the store up and you make maybe not a huge amount of money but at least some money off of this shit you have the rights to make money off of, or you shut it down and you make zero money and you engender ill will.

i’d think if you had access to “all of Sony’s systems” you’d have more than 6000… log files? html? eh??
