ha, i was just gonna post 'oop, replace Cannonball or Chime with Windowlicker'

Windowlicker excites, amuses and maybe even infuriates ('accident vs intention, how do we know?') - all hallmarks of a modern classic. little did we know a couple of years later all pop would sound like this.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I forgot about "Regret," that actually has really good chances as well. But "Everlong"? Yesterday I would've said no chance at all, but the way things have been going I guess it's possible. I still doubt it.

"Windowlicker" at #8 is pretty cool. It just missed making my top 30.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

"Everlong" has no chance, sadly.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm also abandoning hope for 'Doop'.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that Jay might be going 10 for 10, actually. His list is looking pretty good at the moment.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

weird then that Everlong got at least one #1 vote (and not everyone who voted has posted on the 'what did you vote for' thread)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Part of me has trouble believing "Regulate" and "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" made it this high, but if "No Diggity" can make it to #11 then I guess it's not too unlikely.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

i swear i voted for everlong -- my fave rock single of the '90s -- but it doesn't seem to be on my ballot! fuck!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

At least two, counting mine.

WARREN G - "Regulate" (643 points, 33 votes, 3 first place votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000024I7.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"i love this song. yes, it is quite possibly the best song ever. there are several reasons why: 1)it's mega mega mega funky 2)it's completely un-self-conscious and ernest - that's why some of you might find it embarrassing or cheesy, but i find it really endearing 3)nate dogg: so cool, warren g: such a nerd...yet they come together and create exhilirating g-funk, funked out with a gangster twist."

otm dammit (this is another good song i just couldn't like at the time...esp. not when they had to include mcdonald's singing on the uk radio edit for legal reasons)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

GEar! any idea what time you'll complete the list? would like to know how long i have to hang around here at work ;)

I've never heard of #7.

:| (....), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

it's a bit late now, but earlier on i was going to say, it's sad that it doesn't look like either 'no scrubs' or 'jump around' are going to make it. i'll say it now though - it's sad.

NEW ORDER - "Regret" (647 points, 36 votes, 1 first place vote)

" "Regret" works as more of a mood setter that just also happens to be a really fucking great song."

the jamming remix of regulate is so much better than the original.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Melissa's comment doesn't surprise me -- it was pretty popular at the time, but I haven't actually heard it in a few years, myself.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm still holding out hope for I Got Five On It. Was it even nominated?

Dan I., Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

That's a cool cover ("Regret").

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't believe "Pony" didn't make it!!!!!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Still an asshole, I see, dj.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

what the fuck is that doing there!?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I suspect more Americans know Regulate than Regret.

Also, I'm missing Pop Scene, which *is* Blur's best moment.

smirky, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I have heard of both, and really don't think that either are in the top 200 even of the 90s. Still, they're better than #9. I can't even remember how #10 goes, and I have that album somewhere. This is a funny old top 10 for me so far.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

this list is incredible.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Airbag is about a million times better a song than Paranoid Android.

danh (danh), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I gotta admit I couldn't tell you what "Regret" sounds like whereas "Regulate" is unavoidable for anyone of my generation.

Melissa, No wonder radiohead is your favorite band!

Oh please, Melissa is plenty well-informed about music. Hip-hop is just a piss in the ocean anyway, taken in the broader context of what's out there to be heard.

"Regret" got a lot of airplay in North American (for a New Order song). MuchMusic in Canada had the video on heavy rotation -- it was even number 1 for two weeks on their weekly countdown.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh! I voted for Regret. At #29, but I've got to cling to my victories.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

'Regulate' is better than 'Regret', because it has more letters.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I am worried that someone who doesn't know New Order is going to download 'Regret' and wonder what all the fuss is about.

I'm sorry if I'm touching your wrist melissa, i'm just looking for a pulse from your sense of humor.

Both were on the radio all the time when they came out. I knew both as a kid. So shruggedyshrugshrugshrug.

I voted for "Regulate" but not "Regret." Alba's logic works for me.

You can't spell "Regret" without "Regulate"-r.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 19:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I think we need a 'Regrulate' NO/Warren G mashup.

GETO BOYS - "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" (710 points, 33 votes, 4 first place votes)

http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2002-11-08/music_string10-1.jpg

"I'm wondering why more ppl haven't ripped off/copied "Mind Playing Tricks", self-hatred, self-immolation, disgust, squalor, paranoia, brain damage, drugs drugs and more drugs, would've thought it an irresistable formula for an 'underground' of ANY description, and re 'Undergrounds' the first time I heard "MPTOM" it I thought 'great this'll be like VU where in 10/15 years there'll be 10,000 records that are like this one', so where are they?"

regulate is so goddamn smooth... (for a lazy literary reference) it's like that smoke in prufrock rubbing it's back on the window-panes.
