Dott really has to get this one, or he's looking at having to win 2/3rds of the remaining frames. O'Sullivan's just had a bastard kick, so Dott's got a chance.

Which he's fluffed.

Bugger.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Yep. Almost a pattern there.

Aargh... Dott didn't get that red now, either!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

He got THAT one though!

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Vow. Now that Dott-black was a goodie! :)

And then... ...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:16 (nineteen years ago) link

... it's O'Mullivann time again.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Dott's century to win his only frame of the day was heroic in the circumstances. 8-14, though...Hendry beat White from this position in '92. Worth a fiver, surely.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

8-15 now. No way back, surely?

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Dott looks exhausted, like he just wants it to end.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, I'd rather dote on Dott, but it's the hairy one who plays damn well :(

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:58 (nineteen years ago) link

8-16. It looks like we're in for a very short evening session.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:08 (nineteen years ago) link

: (

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the Rocket because he wears a plastic tiara.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:15 (nineteen years ago) link

What happened at 11-8 was unfortunate but even at 12-8 I thought that the mid-session came in at the right time, maybe he could have won that 3-1 but when he came out his safety game just fell to bits.

Hope to see Dott winning a few frames tonight.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

O'Sullivan in control of the 25th frame already.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Will someone PLEASE tell John Parrot he's not funny.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

17-8. The end is nigh.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Dott's just missed. Here we go.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:22 (nineteen years ago) link

18-8. Ronnie's won.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Deserved. Fair play to the underdog and all that, but nobody on the planet could have beaten O'Sullivan at that form.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah second that. I think Mark Williams at his best has the temperament and could've pushed him, could have pushed ronnie into making mistakes but given some of the stuff he played this week he deserved a second title.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Hey, was that nudie episode, that occured just prior to the evening session, 'a first evah' for the Snooker World Championships?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Who'd have thought that Ray Reardon would have an impact on the Embassy in this day and age, though?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

There was a streaker at the Embassy before. Can't remember when.

And Ronnie... goodness me, but he was magic. You never believed he'd miss. Even when he did, you always felt he'd get back in. He's on an entirely different level to everyone.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

the pocket-rocket vs. the rocket indeed.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Who'd have thought that Ray Reardon would have an impact on the Embassy in this day and age, though?

i liked the fact that ronnie at the trophie ceremony described Ray Reardon as his "Plan B". Term used in some previous snooker tournaments to insinuate how paul hunter played better after the intervals having had sex with his bird in between. oh man.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:30 (nineteen years ago) link

If snooker was ambrosia, Ronnie was eating it all week. Untouchable. He's so hardcore, he wears an alice band. Take that you fuxors.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

added bonus he has almost exactly the same voice as david beckham

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

As demonstrated rather smugly by Alistair McGowan.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

He's so hardcore, he wears an alice band

Egotistical Italian sportsman in wearing alice band non-shock.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

In Italy, it is what you do; in snooker. v. hardcore.

Did i dream it, or did ronnie go through an Islamic phase recently? I have a memory that Prince Naseem Hamed instructed him in the ways of the prophet. This is either true, or the greatest slash story never told.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah there was a story that he converted to Islam but I think a denial came a few days later. i think he had just visited a mosque.

eight months pass...
revive: hendry vs o'sullivan (3-1 at the break) at the welsh open final (on interactive).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 January 2005 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

three months pass...
And reviving for the '05, cos this year's set is looking kind of intriguing, i.e. Steve Davis is in the quarter-final having come from 8-2 down to win 13-10 against Michael Holt. Ronnie's there too but apparently not quite firing on all cylinders (I've not been watching as yet), cult hero Graham Dott got taken out 10-9 by Ian McCulloch, Mark Williams took his first round match 10-1, with a maximum break in the final frame, Alan McManus is playing well for the first time in, like, ever, and Stephen Lee is hopefully going to lose to Peter Ebdon. I really don't like Stephen Lee very much.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, and for UK peeps, every single match is being broadcast on the internet. Only for the UK though. Dunno why.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Did anyone else have that "Hah, yes!" reaction when Paul Hunter got knocked out so early, only to be tempered with a "Oh, wait, he's dying of cancer isn't he?" moment?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Is Jimmy White still in it?

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought paul hunter was on 'playing it straight'.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Stephen Lee is hopefully going to lose to Peter Ebdon. I really don't like Stephen Lee very much

Hmm, but wanting Stephen Lee to lose would mean wanting Crazy Eyes Edbon to win.

Alan McManus should have "nearly man" on his waistcoat. Umpteen years in the top 16 despite being Not Very Good.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Jimmy's still in but 5-3 down against Matthew Stevens. Currently on the baize, Ken Doherty and Alan McManus are at 10-apiece, while John Higgins leads Shaun Murphy 4-2.

Hmm, but wanting Stephen Lee to lose would mean wanting Crazy Eyes Edbon to win.

Yeah, but I really, really don't like Stephen Lee very much. I'm not quite sure why, he just seems like such a stunningly joyless man. This impression may have been augmented by the 'Stephen Lee Snooker Skills Challenge' video on the BBC website, though.

shaun murphy's hit some pretty beautiful pots tonight!!!

Oh, and for UK peeps, every single match is being broadcast on the internet. Only for the UK though. Dunno why.

This is pissing me off! I want to watch this! How do they determine UK users, by IP address?

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it must be done by ip address. You could always fake it.

John Virgo just said that McManus has potted 26 out of 26 rest shots so far, which is very impressive. McManus 11-11 Doherty, Higgins 4-4 Murphy.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Presumably the broadcast rights are sold outside the UK which is why they don't want live feeds available.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Probably the case - snooker's becoming very big in Asia, for instance, particularly China.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:18 (eighteen years ago) link

If they could exclude non-UK ip addresses, they could include addresses from countries that don't broadcast the sport. (And if any US cable channels are carrying snooker, I'll eat my hat.)

How do I fake a UK ip address?

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:22 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not so much that they could let countries where it isn't on TV see the streams, George, as that the BBC probably don't have the right to broadcast it outside of the UK and would be in trouble for doing so.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Nice couple of frames there from McManus to take it 13-11.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

There are loads of fake ip utilities around. I have no idea how good they are as I've never used one. Googling will give you a million hits.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Steve Davis' mic is making a noise like a lightsaber.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Couldn't believe how bad Ken was last night - such a complete contrast to his first round display.

some good matches so far but nothing quite close enough to the drama of ronnie vs maguire in the first round...
