moderation request: democratic bans

yeah everytime you decide to get tired of something everybody does you can start a big meta thread about how somebody who does it should be banned

serious answer: i think that this would lead to a whole bunch of people getting banned for the wrong reasons, esp since the drive to vote for a ban is always going to be stronger than the drive to vote against when mostly you just don't give a fuck about them or know who they are.

also it would lead to lengthy, insipid meta threads, which are bullshit

Key question: in the event of a "no" result to a "should x be banned" poll, would those requesting banning agree that the battle had been lost and proceed to stfu? Cause I don't think they would, and b-hurt would abound like beasts upon the earth.

Ha, if only it were that easy. I appear to have made that really rather hard on myself. So much s**t is cached that doing that would involve stopping and starting the site, which scares me s**tless.

It's not moderator tampering that's the issue there - it's user tampering. As you know, I have actually coded the thing that and waht is asking for (a 'suggest ban' button that clocks up votes and then just automatically bans someone when the votes reach a certain level). I agree with you though, it would all go wrong really quickly.

i would support more democratic bannage but i've never really been troubled by any banning of an ilxor by individual mod so it's not a big issue for me personally.

I think the premise of this thread would work better backwards. I like the idea of democratic unbanning, if the mods make an unpopular or controversial decision to ban someone and people want to vote to overturn it.

Hang on, I'm getting all this from Laurel/JJ etc about my "regular daily conduct", which confuses me, as I've actually made it my business on ILX to sincerely participate and attempt to improve relations rather than troll and irritate. If the latter seems to be happening, then there's some serious communication breakdown. Generally when I have a pop, I'm doing so with tongue firmly in cheek.
