rock the boat and rev. is nuts

deej, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

One of my top 10 albums, etc...I need a couple of days, but I'm leaning towards "I Refuse."

Tape Store, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Whatever, the string loop is annoying and there's no tune. Let's talk about the good songs on this album, why don't we? Have you ever noticed that the phrasing of "We Need a Resolution" runs from the eight bar through the seventh, rather than the first through the eighth? Or that the main melody of "Rock the Boat" is all multi-tracked and only the ad libs are in the foreground?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:13 (sixteen years ago) link

so so hard

gff, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:17 (sixteen years ago) link

i am playing 'more than a woman' in protest.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't think of anyone who's had as many great posthumously released singles as Aaliyah (I adore "Come Over," "More Than A Woman" and "I Care 4 U," and "Miss You" and "Rock The Boat" are nice too).

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:23 (sixteen years ago) link

"Miss You" is very underrated. Or maybe it's just a sentimental thing, as I was in a similar situation (that never resolved itself, blah).

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

i voted "rock the boat" with "more than a woman", "it's whatever" and "read between the lines" my next three.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 14:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to completely disagree with the Rev and vote "More than a Woman"

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

"We Need A Resolution," easy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, hate to go for the first track, but I don't think she ever did better.

And, that's the song that finally got me to appreciate modern R&B and listen to Lex.

I eat cannibals, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:11 (sixteen years ago) link

kudos for lex for having the courage to speak up for this otherwise neglected chanteuse.

great record can't pick

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 23:27 (sixteen years ago) link

"we need a resolution" is great, one of the best timbaland beats, i feel like people overlook it in comparison to "try again" or "are you that somebody" but i consider those 3 to be the best pop songs of that era.

pipecock, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:08 (sixteen years ago) link

"We Need A Resolution" definitely. I LOOOOVEE this album, but it's easily my favourite Aaliyah song ever.

Roz, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm pleasantly surprised with the amount of love in this thread.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:59 (sixteen years ago) link

"more than a woman" is the song that popped into my head as soon as i saw the thread, so that. very hard call tho.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 02:02 (sixteen years ago) link

i do think that the last four songs are a bit weak, but then again it's hard to say because 1-10 straight through is just pure goodness.

Roz, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 02:08 (sixteen years ago) link

"What If" is actually one of my fave songs on the album...

But "Rock The Boat" gets my vote easily.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm pleasantly surprised with the amount of love in this thread.

"We Need a Resolution" -- without a doubt.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 9 November 2007 00:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I should probably vote in my own poll, huh. I need to listen to the album first, maybe three times, if I'm ever going to make up my mind.

I remember I was watching MTV late at night and it scrolled across the bottom of the screen.. I was like WTF and didn't believe it until the next day, when it was a big deal everywhere.

i was in oxford hmv, on the phone to a friend, and i had to go and take a moment in the dvd aisle (which, back then, was the empty niche corner of the shop).

"i care 4 u" is my favourite on this album but i can't really imagine living without any of them.

Every song that got zero in this poll is amazing, esp. "Never No More", "U Got Nerve", "It's Whatever" and "I Can Be". There's a voluptuousness to the production that really feels like the last word on that era of R&B (and chronologically it kind of was: by 2002 it felt like Murder Inc's neo-classicism was the dominant sound).

Obviously the central tragedy of Aaliyah passing is the loss of Aaliyah herself, but one of the apparent side-effects was that it seemed to kill Key Beats' career stone-dead. I remember being so excited about their sound based on Destiny's Child's "Perfect Man" and "Independent Women Part II" and then all their work on this album.
