But shit, Heavy Rocks is really fucking good.

More listening tonight, then voting.

I like Pink. How can you not? :)

W4LTER, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:09 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i might also choose Pink in any other day.

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i just saw these guys at a free instore 3hrs ago. so much smoke from the smoke machine, it didn't matter that i didnt' have a good view of them. one really long (45 min) song. started out with like 10minutes of ebow feedback and then into the riffing. pretty awesome

(ARRGHGHGH dudes, stop posting, i have to relog in every time you do!)

jaxon, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i haven't heard all of them, and it's been years since i've heard anything besides Rainbow, and i've listened to that one a LOT lately, so i choose that.

ENVY I HAS IT

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i hope it won't be a one song set in their ny shows...
i will demand my money back..

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:12 (sixteen years ago) link

rainbow is not consistent enough.some good cuts, some mediocre

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

actually,in a way, Pink is like the best Niravan record they never recorded.

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

(nirvana)

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, no wonder I feel like people are always talking about these guys. What a productive lot!

Uh, the only one I've owned (and so have known quite well) was Absolutego, and that I ended up not caring for. Have heard some of _Amplifier Worship_ but nothing after. Am I a fool for not having explored beyond this? I don't really dig much stoner rock or sludge metal anymore, so I'll gladly skip any such records.
(No vote, obv)

Øystein, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:55 (sixteen years ago) link

You should listen to Rainbow then.

W4LTER, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

It's pretty tame.

W4LTER, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, interesting timing for this poll to appear, seeing as I'm starting to really get into this band!
I actually got Amplifier Worship in the mail yesterday and it's great. I don't think I can vote just yet because I've only heard Absolutego and Pink as well, but I love them too.
I actually thought I was over the sludge stuff too before I heard this band though. Can't wait to see them tomorrow!!

Jack Burton, Monday, 15 October 2007 01:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i said pink. once upon a time i would've voted for amplifier worship, but i listen to pink more than any of them so fuck it.

1998 Black: Implication Flooding (with Keiji Haino)

BORIS HEAVY ROCKS

MRZBW, Monday, 15 October 2007 11:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't know all those releases. Amplifier Worship is great, so I'll probably go with that. Altar has some good stuff and some bad stuff. If I remember correctly I like the last two tracks on Altar a lot, but the "pretty one" ("Sinking Belle"?) I think I could do without, or at least without the vocals/piano. I've only heard snippets of Pink, but I'd like to hear more.

They're playing in DC in a week or two, not sure if I'm gonna see them though.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 15 October 2007 13:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Is Rainbow worth checking out if I really like Pink (not so much Altar)?

Telephone thing, Monday, 15 October 2007 13:38 (sixteen years ago) link

It really depends on my mood, but I ended up going with Akuma no Uta (most likely only because its the most recent I've listened to). Rainbow, Altar, Pink, Amplifier Worship, and Absolutego could all have been argued for.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 15 October 2007 13:51 (sixteen years ago) link

saw them last night in SF with Kurihara - they were pretty good but seemed thrown off by some lame technical difficulties early in the show, never seemed to regain their footing after the first song

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link

If Pink wins this, then you can fuck right off. It's a good album, I like it, but it's nowhere near their best. NOWHERE!
The true answer is one of these
1996 Absolutego
1998 Amplifier Worship
2000 Flood
2002 Heavy Rocks
2003 Akuma no Uta
2003 Boris At Last: -Feedbacker-
2005 Dronevil

Anything else and you're either having a laugh or a pitchfork reader who hasn't heard the other albums.
Archive release is awesome but it's live recordings. So I wouldn't vote for it, but I do play my cds often. They go for $200+ but I wouldn't part with them.

btw there's TWO different versions of Vein (I have both) 1 of them is a 2 track "noise" version" and the other is a 12 track "hardcore" version.
The 2 track was mailed only to those people who live outside N America.
So that it would take a week for people to find out that Boris had screwed everyone over by making 2 different versions (i think there's 1100 of the US version and 400 of the Euro. I got lucky and got mine for what my friend paid for his which was the standard price. It's handy knowing people who can get me ltd us only stuff. This albumw as $100+ on ebay at the time.

This is the only Boris album I really like, which is odd considering how pop it is. Stuff like Pink is OK but too cheesy rawkin for my tastes, I try to listen to Flood from time to time but I don't think I have the patience for it.

i really like a lot of their other stuff (probably akuma no uta most), but the daymare version of that record (i.e. the one that begins with "flare") is just so virtuoso and fun. i'm bummed that the far more common 'tearbridge' version's sequencing (and i think alternate mixes at times, iirc?) mess it up

soyrev, Monday, 18 May 2015 00:18 (eight years ago) link

I forgot that I liked Noise last year which has a fair bit of rawk on it, my own opinions don't make sense sometimes.

i liked a bit of Noise but it's nowhere close to the variety, cohesion and fun of New Album: Daymare Edition *imo*

Worth noting that Boris have really started to go in on their Bandcamp page this year; they had a few things up for a long while but after No came out they started adding more and more from the past to the site:

Tomorrow vein, präparat and eternity will be added.

There's a bunch of Boris threads so I'm not sure the most appropriate one, but it's been bumped most recently so...

I mentioned this in the Rolling Metal thread, but the new collaboration with Merzbow, 2R0I2P0 is easily one of the best things I've heard from them in a long time. In addition to some other songs, they take on some songs from LOVE & EVOL, and it really hits on the strengths of both. There is a moment during "EVOL" where Merzbow's got a bed of his usual noise grinding away and a soaring guitar solo starts to pierce through, it's great.
