TJW is fine! Easy languid delivery. Songs like '300 pounds of hongry' and 'Even trolls love rock 'n' roll'... Nuff said.

On an Elvis polk salad tip, compare and contrast:
1970 (the flip of the microphone after 'but they did alright', about 1'18" in http://youtube.com/watch?v=-5CU6_FFWK8&mode=related&search=
1977 still groovin', if slightly unsteady http://youtube.com/watch?v=-5CU6_FFWK8&mode=related&search=

I rilly like his second, s/t album. Esp. "The Daddy"

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 04:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw him last year with around 20 or so others on a midweek night at Iota, in Arlington, VA outside DC. He had the late Waylon Jenning's bassist and drummer with him. From my draft of a review I wrote about that night:

At times during his hour plus set, his single-minded focus on boogie rhythms with lyrical references to all things steamy, rural and Dixie sounded limiting and clichéd. However, the dramatic hi-hats and snare on the wistful ballad “Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You,” from his “Uncovered” album, and his own jazzy finger work on his luscious slow-dance rendition of “Rainy Night,” conveyed that White is more than a one-trick pony.

I own his Warner best of: lots of good songs there.

to reference another current thread, I'm inclined to call this comfort music of the highest order...that thick, viscous guitar, that macho yet intimate voice, lush arrangements, lyrics about simpler times...aural meatloaf...

seen Tony Joe a few times now here in NYC, and he's still great, funky and mesmeric live.

I saw him do a short show last month at a local radio studio, he was really cool, sounded great.

This is about two cats
They're sittin' down by a river in the swamps
They're sittin' down on the logs
One of them is kind of a big fellow and the other one
Is a little bit smaller and he's got a long-billed cap
And they're sittin' there ponderin' on what they're gonna do for the night
And anything the big guy decides on the little guy's for
Cause he digs him, he's cool
So it's called Roosevelt and Ira Lee

The river was dark and muddy
And the moon was on the rise
And all of the creatures in the swampland
Had woke up to feed for the night
Roosevelt and Ira Lee, huh, were sittin' there on a log
Ira Lee turned to Roosevelt and said
I'd sure like to have a mess of bull frog
He said, yeah, yeah, lawd, sure would taste good

So they slipped on their rubber boots
And walked down to the water's edge
And right away they knew that the night would be a bummer
Cause Ira Lee stepped on a water mossacin
He said, uh, uh, lawd, somebody help me

Ira Lee turned to Roosevelt
When he quit his screamin' and kickin'
And he said, let's forget about the bullfrog legs
And go out and steal us some chickens
And Ol' Roosevelt said like this now
Yeah, yeah, ooh, it sure would taste good
Yes it would, I love a chicken
Oh, the river was dark and muddy - yeah

Just recently got into him, but he rules. I really dig that raw live album.

Country funk sounds about right. I think he's brilliant and very underrated. Most of his songs are actually not that good but he has at least 5 uber-classic songs in his catalogue.

Moka, Sunday, 17 April 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Musically maybe he's a one trick pony, but at least it is a beautiful trick.
Also, his Southern tales are simple but have this really mythical and terrifying aura.

I've been curious about Tony Joe White for a few years. I guess it started with Rory Gallagher's cover of "As a Crow Flies" and some stuff I heard on youtube. TJW's greatest hits package on Rhino is really killer. It's one of those times you find a 'Best of' an artist and you start getting anxious to know "is it all this good?" as everything resonates.

I love the sparse production even when the strings come in on some tracks. There is this perfect separation of sounds and the guy's voice is butter.

So I say IXLOR's - are those records worth checking out? What I have heard of those recent remake CDs which to me kind of have a similar vibe to that last Gil Scott Heron or maybe the stuff with RL Burnside with drum machines recordings from a few years back. Do those hold up to repeat listens? I know some of you know as every label in North America and the EU is sending you copies.

it's weird how he seems to be having a resurgence of late? I had never heard of him up until a couple of years ago and just in the last year he showed up at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and on that Foo Fighters series

Οὖτις, Monday, 8 December 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link

don't know -- he was on that light in the attic country funk comp right? no idea if that would really have an effect, but i think it was a fairly popular release as far as those things go.

tylerw, Monday, 8 December 2014 20:43 (nine years ago) link

I've heard he's still amazing live. Just him and a drummer of similar vintage.

Brio2, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:07 (nine years ago) link

yeah i'd like to see that -- dude is an awesome guitarist.

tylerw, Monday, 8 December 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

he was on that Country Got Soul comp (which was put out by Casual Records) which came out before that Light in the Attic comp and was where I first heard him.

xp

There are a lot of levels to really like Tony Joe White. I got to think if he wanted to play the game, he might have been a much bigger star as the guy had the look and could really sing. I love the crazy stories in his songs and the guy is wicked as hell with a wah wah pedal.

"They Caught the Devil and Put Him in Jail in Eurora Arkansas" is a movie, not a song. I could easily see some type of weird 70s movie set in the south to the lyrics of that song.

Still getting some love. His son gave some acoustic guitar and vocal demos White had done at home to Dan Auerbach to turn into full band arrangements with Nashville session guys. It's actually pretty good, "Boot Money" is great.
