my first reaction was "bullshit, 'they all look alike' hah ha"
more you look at it tho, maybe (but this always happens with this kind of "is it x famous person?" photo ids)

The nose is just too different for the ebay photo to be legit.

This is not Johnson.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

The thing that's always distracted me from Robert Johnson's music is his vocal similarity to Oliver Hardy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, it looks kind of like him, might as well bid until it gets up to $1 million or so. Too big a risk after that.

From his wiki page:
Recording pitch question

Johnson's recorded work has become more widely heard since the Columbia double CD release. Some musicians have opined that the recordings run too fast. Johnson mainly used open tunings like open A and open E, and often used a capo to change the pitch of the song. This means that some passages would be played very high upon the neck of the guitar, which would make them very difficult to execute, or in some cases impossible to play at all (for example, the intro of "Walkin' Blues, which should be played on the 16th fret of a 12-fret-to-the-body-guitar). Some passages of Johnson's guitar playing sound constrained and not natural to the modern ear (as modern music would sound when it is sped up), and some of his vocals sound out of tune and robotic. When Johnson's music is slowed down (one article even suggests slowing it down as much as 20%), Johnson's music sounds more natural, his guitar sounds warmer and fuller and more in line with other recordings from the late 1930's. His voice becomes more expressive although it loses some of Johnson's trademark emotional "whine". Speeding up recorded music is common in popular music, as it makes music sound fresher and it adds punch and energy.

Is there a consensus on whether or not the recordings are speeded up? Has anyone ever heard them slowed down? This might remove the "Oliver Hardy" similarity Marcello mentions (but then it wouldn't sound like Robert Johnson :/ ).

It is not known whether Johnson attended school in the Delta during this time. Some later accounts say that he could neither read nor write, while others tell of his beautiful handwriting.

onimo (onimo), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Sure he could write! "Sweet Home Chicago" for a kickoff!

Wasn't there some film footage floating around a couple of years that some (dubiously) claimed showed RJ?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

This is not Mel Torme.

The photo of Johnson smiling is so fucking scary. Like he's not human or something. He's tensed up to an unearthly degree, there's that manic grin but his eyes look as if they're trying to look inside himself. His physical positioning is odd, like there's several different actions competing to be performed.

There was some supposed film footage, but I think the cinema behind him was showing "the Robt Johnson story", or some such 'after he died this movie was created' feature.

But didnt Johnson have allergies? Maybe the photo with his nose looking large was during an allergy flare up...

Or the fact that he probably had to hold that pose/rictus for quite a while. Potography was bit less efficient back then. It is a rather disturbing picture, though, yeah.

No, I don't think so. He was possessed by Satan. Besides, potography was just as efficient then as it is now. The reason there's so few potographs of Johnson is because his image didn't show up on the card most of the time, due to his possession.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I stand corrected.

-- Pleasant Plains /// (pleasant.plain...), January 10th, 2007.

Uh, what the hell are you talking about? Are you RETARDED?

He was NOT "POSSESSED BY SATAN". You'd have to be a cretin to think that.

He SOLD HIS SOUL to SATAN. That's very different. This also explains all the features I was talking about. Satan, however would leave him alone until his time came, at which point he would dragged down into the feiry pit of brimstone for ETERNITY.

Srsly, don't make shit up.

I remember when that VF piece ran. This restoration - I mean it really doesn't matter if it's RJ in the picture or not (seems definitely to be him, though), this is an incredible photograph. Shines's suit is A+ fuckin awesome and the expression on RJ's face is so young and beautiful. There's just...there seems a lot of feeling is this picture, to me.
