brilliant young and angsty (thatguy), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Unless the sadly truncated "Kids With Guns" is really phenomenal, "O Green World" is the best song here by a long shot. Not to impugn the rest of the record, which is far better than it had any right to be. I'm actually kind of disappointed by Doom's rapping for once; he did much better on the Daedelus album a month or so ago.

Telephonething, Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought "O Green World" was one of the weaker ones. Seemed a little under-developed on first listen. Its growing on me anyways. Personal favorites right now are probably "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead," "DARE," and the last 2 tracks. Like I said, huge improvement over the debut, which was like 2/3s filler.

Can someone ysi the Doom track? Mine didn't come with it.

er... Blurillaz!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 11 April 2005 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

The hights of this record aren't as high, nothing quite as good as 19/2001, 5/4, or Clint Eastwood. But it's much more consistant than the last record. I'm hoping Kids with Guns will be great and 5/4-ish. Has anyone got that full song? Want to gmail it?

Getting to hear a better quality version of Dirty Harry has made the pisspoor quality of the rap a lot more obvious.

I like the idea of Gorillaz switching producers every time, and becoming Damon's producer subsidy project.

Gorillaz had to have raked in a lot of cash for the automator, and I bet this one will do the same for Dangermouse.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Is Damon really the head honcho in all this? Even the songs that don't have his vocals?

album of the year so far for me. *hated* the first lp.
listened to this 10 times in 24 hours. 'dirty harry' and 'last living souls' - fantastic.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:24 (eighteen years ago) link

hated what gorillaz i had heard so far and hated the whole concept really... but i heard this on a long car journey yesterday and thought it was *GREAT*, i'm rather shocked.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 10:31 (eighteen years ago) link

There's too much atmosphere on this one and the beats are too soft compared to the first one, which tended towards the silly (in a good way). Damon shouldn't have let Dan take Koala away with him. It's still a good record.
the reviews are *unanimously* posttive everywhere.

SPOILER ! :

the bit where martina topley bird comes in on 'all alone' must rank as one of the most heart-stopping surprises on a record in living memory. like so much of the lp it really shouldn't work but just...does.

it's redefining the term 'eclectic' for me too.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I made a friend listen to that same part this weekend! When the breakbeat starts in right after her bit it really blends back into the song. I think a lot of the songs would seem really piecemeal if the transitions were less solid.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Not sure yet - a lot of it reminds me of Think Tank.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:48 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah me too.

it's weird, the songs never feel like they're going to fall apart any minute, but when you listen you're sort of thinking
'how is this hanging together so well?'

piscesboy, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I heard a good chunk of it last week via a friend and I was having too much fun creating fake Damon lyrics as the songs happened to pay much attention to the music. It sounded vaguely pleasant.

"And I'm balding/and I wish I wasn't/Oh Justine, if only/Hmmm hmmm where is Graham?"

No guests on this one or very few, so more like The Fall (the free Christmas Day 2010 Damon-on-his-iPad album, not as in '..plus your granny on bongos').

Mark G, Friday, 1 June 2018 10:29 (five years ago) link

I thought Murdoc was showing his age by balding, but apparently, he's still in jail and the balding green dude is his replacement, Ace, a former Powerpuff girls villan. http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/gorillaz-recruit-powerpuff-girls-character-watch-their-new-video-starring-jack-black

BrianB, Friday, 1 June 2018 12:34 (five years ago) link

I do kind of like the idea of Murdoc being replaced by another pre-existing cartoon character. It's like when John Frusciante was replaced with Dave Navarro.

The new LP isn't all that bad. It's nowhere near the level of Demon Days, but at least Albarn's presence is more noticeable on this one! 'Tranz' is my favourite Gorillaz track in ages.

Gorillaz - Strange Timez ft. Robert Smith (Episode Six):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbA5p54Rw2M

Bee OK, Thursday, 10 September 2020 03:32 (three years ago) link

ILM doesn’t talk much about Gorillaz. They frequently misuse collaborators but I’m very interested in some of the guests in this one. Elton John + 6lack in the same track sounds ridiculous but I love that combo. I think the Goldlink + UMO and JPEG + Chai tracks might be good but cautious as to why they got sent to the Deluxe / bonus tracks version of the album.

Full tracklist:
1.) "Strange Timez" (featuring Robert Smith)
2.) "The Valley of the Pagans" (featuring Beck)
3.) "The Lost Chord" (featuring Leee John)
4.) "PAC-MAN" (featuring ScHoolboy Q)
5.) "Chalk Tablet Towers" (featuring St. Vincent)
6.) "The Pink Phantom" (featuring Elton John & 6LACK)
7.) "Aries" (featuring Peter Hook & Georgia)
8.) "Friday 13th" (featuring Octavian)
9.) "Dead Butterflies" (featuring Kano & Rosani Arias)
10.) "Désolé [Extended Version]" (featuring Fatoumata Diawara)
11.) "Momentary Bliss" (featuring slowthai & SLAVES)

Deluxe Edition Bonus Tracks:
12.) "Opium" (featuring EARTHGANG)
13.) "Simplicity" (featuring Joan As Police Woman)
14.) "Severed Head" (featuring Goldlink & Unknown Mortal Orchestra)
15.) "With Love to An Ex" (featuring Moonchild Sanelly)
16.) "MLS" (featuring JPEGMAFIA & CHAI)
17.) "How Far?" (featuring Tony Allen & Skepta)
