If I were playing a party or something, the first thing i'd play other than the singles would be "What They Do" w BG which is great. I also love "ASAP" and "Chillin' With My Bitch" and the last track is heartrending.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Djdee, seriously, I've seen you post here. I respect your knowledge of hip-hop. I think you are more open-minded than most people here actually. Believe it or not, I don't like hating on artists either, so if you'll tell me something that I might not find dumb I'll seriously give it a chance. But I'll still think the lyrics in U Don't Know Me are just silly. And to me he's biting Juvenile's style on that song.

And those cocky-ass little faces he always makes just piss me off. Sorry, I'm going off again..

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:17 (nineteen years ago) link

The lyrics to U Don't Know Me are pretty basic mainstream rap lyrics these days I think. He has a little twist to them that goes along with the accent, but I mean, nothing too amazing. But listen to his verse on "Neva Scared", which is wicked and convoluted, or the entireity of "Doin My Job", which is posed with more precision and delicacy than you often see, even from the subtlest MCs.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:32 (nineteen years ago) link

And I mean, lyrics aren't his strong point or anything.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh dont take me too seriously i'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, i just thought the accent comment was funny. But I think he sounds a lot different than Juvie, who's voice is a lot more rough and he swallows words and spits them out. TI is much smoother and more precise, slurred rather than growled. And lyrically they're pretty diff too, juvie more impressionistic and T.I. more specific. Thats a really bad summation of their lyrical differences but i'm feeling lazy.

xp i think his lyrics are great!

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Trap Muzik is way better, but Urban legend is his Life After Death/ Hard Knock Life-type relaxed party album, and it succeeds on that level. Countdown is great, even though it's just Rubberband Man again.

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:37 (nineteen years ago) link

What are you looking for lyrically that he doesn't deliver on?

His lyrics seem a perfect fit for his persona, tough, scrawny, clever, suave, good-looking, scrappy.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I wonder if the reason Lil Scrappy hasn't blown up any more is because he's almost too much like T.I. (although not as good, obv)

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Well I gotta hand it to you. You really said all that pretty damn well. Like I said, I haven't heard a lot of his stuff. I just hear U Don't Know Me 20 times a day. And I just think the lyrics seem really obvious. Just like "hey this rhymes and sounds cool". I guess doing a (seemingly) dumbed-down song for single's sake bothers me.

And as far as comparing him to Juvie, I was just referring to the way he did those songs back in the day where he repeated a particular catch phrase at the end of each line - U Understand??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:55 (nineteen years ago) link

ah gotcha yeah lots of MCs do that tho! It doesnt strike me as much of a gimmick or anything, but i can see how it could grate though.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:00 (nineteen years ago) link

"ASAP" is the next single! I think it's an odd choice but it's starting to grow on me. "Prayin' For Help" is my personal favorite.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooh yeah that one's great too! I'm glad he's not using the obvious tracks as singles, like the ones with nelly and pharell. Those are serious low-points i think.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:18 (nineteen years ago) link

The Slim Thug track ("3 Kings") he guests on with Bun B is fantastic.

Matt Chesnut (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:21 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah...it was definitely kind of a surprise and a relief when he picked "U Don't Know Me" as an official single. almost none of the tracks with big features are even decent on a radio fodder level, esp. the Lil Kim and Neptunes ones.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Bun-B owned 3 kings for the "curvy like a cello" line.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:28 (nineteen years ago) link

nah ti kills bun b on "three kings", even though him sucking up to houston is kind of suspect, it's just the way he kind of lopes around the beat all like "yeah i'm bigging up houston rappers but i'm not really THAT bothered", like he knows atlanta is bigger & better than houston. johnny badlees, you need to check out the song "ti vs tip", lyrically it's the reason alot of people got excited by ti in the first place. the latest cd was awful though.

i like urban legend, i just don't love it like urban legend, seriously an every-day album for me and maybe my favourite album of last year or the year before, whichever year it came out

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:20 (nineteen years ago) link

the sad thing about the neptunes song is that the rap is great. how many more songs must pharrell ruin?

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 31 March 2005 23:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Just keep Pharrell out of Houston and i have no problem with him.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:10 (nineteen years ago) link

keep Pharrell on the planet Neptune so he can stop ruining all of Earth's songs.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:15 (nineteen years ago) link

haha dont you like the drop it like its hot remix tho?

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:30 (nineteen years ago) link

man...I remember back when the Neptunes first came out with the Triton presets and people would joke that they were using Casio presets...but on that remix they actually ARE using Casio presets. I have those drum sounds on my keyboard! I mean it's an ok record but jeez!

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the reason it works so well is its so unexpectedly minimal, not in terms of the sparseness like the first one (and if anything, the textures are a lot more smudged and drippy than the original) but in terms of the smallness of the drums and bells and its lack of banging-ness.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:45 (nineteen years ago) link

less is more and alla that, like you expect it to bang and it doesnt which somehow seems more surprising/shocking.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I get what you're saying but I would like to point out that you just described a Neptunes track as "unexpectedly minimal". that's like saying you touched a stove and it was unexpectedly hot.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:49 (nineteen years ago) link

that water sure came out of left field being so wet like that.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Usually they use huge drum sounds though! From "Superthug" to "Grindin" to "Beautiful" they've always had the big-ass drum sound. I dont think its an expected direction at all, the drums are so dinky and almost swizz-y (circa 99)

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

the drop it like it's hot remix was a brief glimmer of hope. "chef boyar-p"!!

btw, U Don't Know didn't really strike me as that surprising for a debut single, ie 'one for the streets'?

the most mystifying thing about this thread is the guy complaining about TI's "wise-ass smirk", which is my favorite thing about him. I love watching him mug for the camera!! Lil Scrappy, who I like too, doesn't have any of TI's suaveness or cool charisma (though he does have charisma of a different sort).

Cabaret Voltron (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Friday, 1 April 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago) link

well yeah, "U Don't Know Me" is a solid single. but it clearly wasn't planned as a proper a-side, since it was tacked onto the end of the "Bring Em Out" video, it was just a street single at the time but now it's the official single with its own video, which is a little bit surprising (in a good way).

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:11 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah good point, when I saw it at the end of the Bring Em Out video I thought it meant there wouldn't be a full video for it. glad I was wrong!! Bring Em Out kinda grates at this point, but UDKM still sounds pretty fresh.

Cabaret Voltron (PUNXSUTAWNEY PENIS), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm, I don't understand the Neps hate. Overexposure I guess. Anyway, the one on Urban Legend isn't very good, but it's not the worst song on the record, certainly.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:05 (nineteen years ago) link

between Nelly and Lil Kim its got some hot competition.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:07 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't mind the neptunes, i just wish pharrell wouldn't sing or rap or appear in videos. is that so much to ask?

Sym Sym (sym), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:32 (nineteen years ago) link

all I'm saying is that I can count on one hand the number of Neptunes beats from the past 2 years that I like as much as about 50 tracks they made before that. I don't really care if they never fell off for you, but for me they did.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:39 (nineteen years ago) link

although to keep this on topic, the title track from T.I.'s first album, "I'm Serious", is one of my favorite Neptunes beats ever.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:41 (nineteen years ago) link

five years pass...

I finally got I'm Serious, which was the only one I didn't have. it definitely sounds dated but I'm surprised at how good it is (and surprised at how it didn't get more critical love). I mean it's obv. not an essential album and he clearly was rough around the edges at this point but you can see a lot of what he would evolve into later. the beats are pretty good too although the later ones are better.
