I stand by my overunheterogenousness stance though.

Actually, after hearing some good dancey stuff offa slsk (esp. the Theo Parrish "Slowly Surely" thing), I was kinda hoping she might push things HARDER. Like, of all the people doing shit today, she seems one of the only ones who might be able to handle "eclecticism" without it seeming forced. This album is like too much too different but also not enough not different enough.

Honestly though, after all the releases of the past month, I get the feeling I'm just too overwhelmed anymore to form solid opinions on anything.

Oh shit Matt, I just read your review...OTM. Esp. about "Spring Summer Feeling" seeming slapped-together.

Everyone needs to push things harder.

the Theo Parrish "Slowly Surely" thing

ESSENTIAL.

"Family Vacation" is great. The rest is, uh, THERE, I guess.

Jason King's (who likes it more than I do) wrote this about it:

Family Vacation" is great.

Please tell me this is about going to Ocean City, NJ.

oops, I meant "Family Reunion," not Vacation!

It might be the best song about green onions since Booker T and the MGs (not that it has much competition, admittedly.)

Seconded on Slowly, Surely; which made its way onto repeat for a week and a half some years ago.

Her new album is kind of incredible.

(1) I disagree with everyone above about Beautifully Human, which has held up really well for me, and which I prefer to the first record (except there's nothing on it as good as "A Long Walk"). "Family Reunion" is great, though.

(2) The new album: all too credible. It sounds to me like what everyone who wrote above was hearing in Beautifully Human. Lack of distinction. Too many producers with disparate styles. Too lethargic. Generic sexxx-ups and generic whine-fests. Serious lack of telling, poetic detail like the green potato salad. (With maybe one exception: the pitch-perfect inflection on "I knew you was seein' other people. I was seeing other people.") It's not all bad, but it's not at all memorable. The last time I heard it was maybe a week ago, and I don't think I can hum a bar from anything other than the title song and "Crown Royal". Oh, yeah . . . "Hate On Me". The world needed another anti-hataz track.

Okay, Jill's most recent album debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart? I didn't think she had a fanbase strong enough for that!

"So Gone" is severely underrated on this board. Where is the love, people? It's not THAT hard to pretend Paul Wall's verse doesn't exist.

Ooh, I wasn't familiar with this song until someone in the youtube comments pointed out it was previously recorded by Lorraine Ellison in 1969. "Stay With Me" is mind melting, so I had to check out her take on this song, and wow.
