One Man's Mede Is Another Man's Persian (Dada), Friday, 8 September 2006 08:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Lonesome Crowded West and Songs In The Key Of Life are the only ones I know that are good all the way through, in that Nilsson Schmilsson way where every new track that comes on makes you go, "Fuck! This is good!" There are tons, tons, tons of double albums that more or less acquit themselves, the White Album being the quintessential example, with enough gems to balance out the general lack of focus. But on a single album those kinds of ratios would equal a major bomb, making these types of things a "fans only" thing whose idiosyncracies you come to love... very few artists manage even one SINGLE album that really feels like it needs all its songs, so perhaps I'm holding doubles to a high standard, but really we'll be here all day if we list every double album that's "good" in the White Album sense....

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 8 September 2006 11:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Songs In The Key Of Life is rubbish all the way through, though (sorry Doc, I've tried for 30 years but I still don't like it; big comedown from the previous three).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 8 September 2006 11:16 (seventeen years ago) link

And "Nilsson Schmilsson" isn't good all the way thru either (and is far from being Harry's best album)

One Man's Mede Is Another Man's Persian (Dada), Friday, 8 September 2006 11:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Jethro Tull - Living In The Past
Prefab Sprout - Jordan: The Comeback

er, would you believe I meant to say Back To The Bars?

I trust you!

One Man's Mede Is Another Man's Persian (Dada), Friday, 8 September 2006 12:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Todd Rundgren mention reminds me to be shocked that XTC's English Settlement has not yet been mentioned (although, like many others mentioned here, it's only a single CD).

ian, Friday, 2 April 2010 06:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Whoever mentioned Skylarking 4 years ago must have been thinking English Settlement, since Skylarking wasn't a double.

Less likely they were thinking Oranges and Lemons.

I mentioned OK Computer on some other double albums thread and got told off because it's a single CD, even though it's a double on vinyl. People were arguing that in the CD era the definition of a double album is a double CD. Oddly enough the same argument didn't seem to take flight on the triple albums thread, where people were nominating all sorts of albums that are triples on vinyl but only doubles on CD.

eight months pass...

There are six great double albums that came out this year by Colour Haze, Ufomammut, Motorpsycho, Crippled Black Phoenix, Baroness and Swans:
http://fastnbulbous.com/double-trouble-double-albums-are-still-a-thing/

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 3 December 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

Nice write-up. The Ufomammut and Swans are locks for my top five, with the Baroness and Color Haze releases not too far behind. I thought the Crippled Black Phoenix had some great moments, but didn't really earn its epic length. Haven't heard the Motorpsycho album.
