I don't think "Blister in the Sun" is the best song from that first Violent Femmes album.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 29 July 2004 17:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Isn't the Femmes record from '82?

Allmusic says '83, if we can still trust them after their site-redesign fiasco.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

OH yeah, then what is?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

"Gone Daddy Gone"

"As the game extends the cycle, be ready to move. One heart's for love, one's for peace."

frankie teardrop, Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I like "Kiss Off," "Gone Daddy Gone," AND "Add It Up" more.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd have to say "Gone Daddy Gone" or "Add it Up." Personal favorites, both.

On second though, AMG may be right about the release date. I think 1982 was when they were discovered by the Pretenders.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I respectfully submit that "Blister in the Sun" is the best thing that the Femmes ever did, certainly the thing they will be remembered for, and perhaps the only essential track from their discography.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

"Panama" was from 84, wasn't it? I don't think it was released before the album, and wasn't the album released on Jan 1, 1984?

wetmink (wetmink), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I respectfully register my objection to the last statement by o. nate. femmes are ace and you know it.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

(Btw, my comments re: "Blister in the Sun" also apply for "Institutionalized" vis-a-vis Suicidal Tendencies.)

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Depending on where one lives, it may have come out Dec 31, 1983.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

"Panama" was from 84, wasn't it?

You may be right on that score. In that case, substitute "Beat It".

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

"Last Dance," George Clinton.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Was Ratt's "Wanted Man" from '83? If so, tack that on to my shortlist.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

All is quiet, and record stores aren't open on New Year's Day.

"Beat It" is not as good "Shaking Through" or "Hearts." "Many moons cascade one river--they light from side to side."

frankie teardrop, Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

doesnt phil collins have a song "two hearts"? is that not from 1983?
That was 1989, from the "Buster" soundtrack. The movie began and ended Collins' acting career, although he did get a couple of hits from it (I believe "Groovy Kind of Love" was the other).

But seriously*, who thought that PHIL COLLINS would make a decent movie star. WTF?? Which executive producer is to blame for this sort of travesty.

(* hahaha, OK, not really)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Probably stems from his recurring role on Miami Vice in the mid-'80s.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

btw record stores ARE open on new years day.

i have this mental connection joining/confusing bob hoskins and phil collins in my brain, wherein i always see phil collins talking with roger rabbit and bob hoskins playing drums with wristbands and a really bad mullet

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

"Bring It On" James Brown

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 29 July 2004 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

The movie began and ended Collins' acting career

HA! Obviously you never watched Miami Vice. Phil starred in the dramatic episode "Phil the Shill" in 1984.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I guess, objectively, "Shaking Through" is the best song on Murmur, but I don't know if it's my favorite.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Obviously you never watched Miami Vice.
Indeed, I had forgotten about this. And yeah, I'd never watched it until it started showing up on reruns.
OK, but he didn't so anything after "Buster", did he?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:30 (nineteen years ago) link

New Order owned '82-'86. Maybe not '85.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:44 (nineteen years ago) link

"Let's All Go" by Killing Joke......obviously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Collins started as a child actor, surely? Or was that Dennis Waterman? And does it matter?

(IMDB to the rescue - an uncredited appearance in A Hard Day's Night and the role of Mike Lucas in Calamity The Cow [1967]with Desmond Carrington! Even old Des won't play Phil's records on the radio.)

Anyway, the answer is "Pale Shelter". To this and many other things.

the verlaines - death and the maiden

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:16 (nineteen years ago) link

The best Collins-related song of 1983 is "That's All." That's already been established. Otherwise, this is all about "Hearts." "Be ready now, be ye circle. Be the central force ye life."

frankie teardrop, Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought Pale Shelter was 1982? Or maybe that was the album, with the single to follow in 1983? Anyhow, great pick.

"Every Breath You Take" hasn't been mentioned yet -- and it's still fucking amazing twenty years on. I still get the chills from it sometimes. And somehow, it's greatness hasn't been tainted by the overplayed-to-the-point-of-becoming-violently-ill Puffy ripoff. It's still great despite this.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

"Synchronicity II" gives me the chills more--"Many miles away there's a shadow on the door on the cottage of the shore of a dark distant lake: many miles away"--and neither gives me the goosebumps "Hearts" does. So it's still "Hearts."

1983 is a strange year becuase nothing 'cept REM's first record actually came out that year. Thriller is late 1982 ... Synchrocity came out in '83, but that shit is overrated. If anything great came out that year, it was probably something by Bambaataa ... though his best stuff also came out in '82.

Chris O'Connor (Chris O'Connor), Saturday, 31 July 2004 04:33 (nineteen years ago) link

1983 is a strange year becuase nothing 'cept REM's first record actually came out that year.

AND 1999!!!!

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:44 (nineteen years ago) link

(that is to say, the best song of 1983 was "1999" -- unless it was "Little Red Corvette")

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Barry is quite right about Pale Shelter originally surfacing in '82, but it wasn't a UK hit until Apr/May '83 and so is forever associated with that year as far as I'm concerned. See also: Billie Jean.

Ah, yes, "Relax". Probably #7 on my '83-in-'83 list, published in the back of my O-level Chemistry exercise book with Neil Stafford acting as editor. Then came Mike Read.

I presume Marcello was operating on a one artist/one single basis otherwise where's "Don't Talk To Me About Love"?

Radio Free Europe

Man I fucking love old school R.E.M.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:13 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, so out of curiosity I'm listening to "Two Hearts" right now. And, it's pretty good!
But it's just gone into a really horrible middle eight with hammond organ and a bad Trevor Rabin guitar "lick".
We're back to the chorus now, and all is well.
The guitar solo on the coda is sweetness itself.

I still prefer "It Can Happen" though.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten this bit - Jon Anderson's solo vocal at the end. Mistake!

Best song on Marcello's list - "Photograph".

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Some great stuff that year, but I'm gonna have to go with "Photograph." I have a hard time believing mortals created that track (and there's been little proof that Mutt Lange is one).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 31 July 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Limited strictly to actual singles here's a breakdown:

Best Song by Australians: AC/DC, "Nervous Shakedown"

English: Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Wolf"

Irish: Dexy's Midnight Etc. "Come On Eileen" (this was the very last single I ever bought. Never owned any released after '83)

Canadia: Men Without Hats (now Men Without Jobs), "The Safety Dance"
Technofolk - The wave of nobody's future!

American (female singer): The Motels, "Suddenly Last Summer"

American (male singer): John Cougar Mellencamp, "Crumblin' Down" (His best rocker ever, says me)

Black American: Prince, "1999"

Former Black American: Michael Jackson, "Billie Jean" or "Beat It", toss a coin.

If I really REALLY had to choose, I'd probably go with "1999", which certainly captured the mood of '83 more than that of '99. (No Y2K refs, for one reason.)

And there must have been some good American rock songs that year (other than "Legs" and "Sharp-Dressed Man," which I like fine), I'm just not thinking of them. Flipper's "Get Away" was '82, and Hüsker Dü's "Eight Miles High" was '84.

eight years pass...

I wanted to create a "Best (Pop) Songs of 1983" thread but found this one to be close enough.

But i also found this (1983: the year it all went wrong?): 1983: the year it all went wrong?

It is harder to choose the best (pop) songs from 1983 than I thought.

This isn't the *best* song of 1983, and I'm probably in the minority for liking it, but it is a song I find myself going back to for some strange reason.

six years pass...

The rare instance where I disagree with enough of your rankings that the chosen order seems almost random to mine eyes. And it only starts with consigning 'Der Kommissar' to the Hague, for shame.

Gary Ornmigh, Heywood's son (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 6 March 2019 13:53 (five years ago) link

I think I'm probably too biased to weigh in because nostalgia for 1983 makes me love almost every one of those songs.
But still, I think i can safely say that the following are empirically awesome, and unfairly maligned:

Meh

Irene Cara – Flashdance… What a Feeling (the slow build is an irresistible force)
Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - (i'm pretty sure this would have still been a hit if released during any arbitrary year between 1983 and now)
The Motels – Suddenly Last Summer (haven't actually heard this since 1983, but it sounds great in my head)
Toto – Africa (I guess the backlash was inevitable, but it's not Toto's fault)
Men at Work – Down Under (that flute riff! as great as 'overkill' is, this song towers above it)

The Hague

David Bowie – China Girl (unless this got banned for the lyrics, which i get)
After the Fire – Der Kommissar (alles klar, herr sotosyn?)
