My friend asked me about the album today, this must be the 8th thread about these guys on ILM too. Anyway I think the remixes are some of the best remixes I've heard since I started listening to lots of dance music. The Mekon one and the Felix one in particular, not heard the Streets one yet unfortunately. I'd also pretty much agree that Royksopp's Night Out is the best track on the album. I do like the feel of Poor Leno as a house track, I mean as early evening house it is quite a charming little record I think, certainly distinctive if a little bland. Remind Me ain't too bad either.

The live show blows away the album though.

I just described to someone as 'techno/idm that's a bit twee but as they're Scandinavian and thus descended from the most infamous race of pirates in the world it's not so twee as, say, J-pop'

And I like them, too.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 23 January 2003 01:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

they're even more dreadful than the streets.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's not twee, it's adult contemporary file next to bette midler and it really ought to be on your local cozy station's playlist.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

everyone does it seems...i'm surprised it won an MTV European gong last year - videos without the artists appearing in them at all rarely get that kind of commemoration (although it also happened with The Avalanches' 'Since I Left You' the year before)

it was co-directed by the brother of Etienne de Crecy too, video pop-pickers

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am xtremely envious of people who get MTV Europe and have access to videos that have no people in them.

minna's definitely right about their big strength: when they set the tempo to 130 bpm and start throwing in disco beats they're unstoppable. When they're going for the Moby demographic with downtempo chill-out triphop it's time to look for a bucket.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

but they are actually pretty good at that downtempo chill-out style - maybe a bit lightweight in the same way Moby's stuff is, but that needn't be a bad thing - they're obviously keen to maintain a pop sensibility rather than match a deeper ambient sound ala Global Comm, Boards Of Canada etc.

realized today that their beck remix ("still missing/heaven's hammer") is not only a good record, but one of my favourite ever. epic melancholy supported by chubby bass groove, stuffed with whizz-bang sfx that actually contribute rhythmically. best thing they've ever done, i think. dunno why it was left off guerolito, it destroys air's 80-fication of the song.

The Boys Noize mix of "Happy Up Here" is awesome.

van smack, Sunday, 15 February 2009 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

While "Happy Up Here" is a pleasant enough "Eple" rehash, the rest of the album is very good, specifically the bouncy "Miss it So Much", the Kate Bush-y "You Don't Have a Clue" and the stupendously dramatic "The Girl and the Robot" with Robyn. My only problem is with the very irritating "Tricky Tricky" which will probably be a big hit to spite me.

Royksopp do reinforce my theory that Robyn, Lykke Li, Karin Dreijer and Kate Havnevik are all the same person though.

so I'm listening to Parliament and it gets to 'do that stuff' and all of a sudden I get a total pang of nostalgia for Nice & Smooth ( -- still awesome, "I can get mellow / Lay back, and let my girl play the cello / Hello / I hate Jell-O") and then I get to this new Royksopp video

ok I am just a sucker for this. I love how they pitch-shift modulated a parliament sample essentially into a cover of the one other song I know by them, they're using a sample to cover... themselves!

Milton Parker, Monday, 4 May 2009 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I love Röyksopp and their latest album is ace. But I like them better when they are not sampling.

(ok that's the only other song I know by them, and it looks like they're normally less into bricolage. still, what they did with those two samples is exactly my kind of thing, these guys are going to know exactly what to do with Melodyne 2 if it ever comes out)

Is this all ILM has on Junior? I've never really listened to this band before (apart from hearing the singles off Melody AM) but I'm really enjoying this album. The Girl And The Robot, True To Life, You Don't Have A Clue - all totally killer. I don't see how the vocalists are a miss-step.

So Senior is a huge disappointment. Junior was one of my favourite albums of last year, all shiny production and great tunes but this one is so dull. There were a few pleasant moments but nothing memorable and none of these songs touch Roysopp Forever from the last album.

Curious way to go about asking if you should check it out but ok. I think it's worth hearing. It's got some good tracks, a few tracks that are just ok and no real stinkers. Nothing incredible either.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

My case for it being better than Junior = fewer vocals on Senior. Senior is more of a listening album, Junior is more of a 'let's make party tracks with guest vocalists'.

really enjoying that album, have absolutely no time for the story at the end.

it seems so out of place and is joined on at the end.

Solid steel put a Ray Bradbury short story in the middle of a compilation in 2001 and this feels like an outdated extension of that.
