This is from googling "the city that works".
I thought that was a corrupt alderlady up top.

BUT.
I'm having dinner with my mom at Marigold (new Indian restaurant) tonight. I'm in a pickle because it was her birthday a couple weeks ago and so I was planning on paying for dinner, even though she usually pays. But then this morning I was thinking about it and realized I don't really have that kind of money to spend, because she'll want to get wine and dessert, and it'll be at least $50. So I said, maybe I'll just get her an iTunes gift certificate instead.
Cool, right? So then she calls me this morning and leaves me a voicemail (I was on the train) that says, "Are we still on for tonight? I don't have any ideas about where to go, so I'll let you decide, since you're treating me." And I was like wha? Did I accidentally tell her that I had been planning on treating her? I don't know why I would've done that, since my plan all along was to surprise her by picking up the check when it arrived. So now I don't know whether I'm obligated to pay for it or not. I'm hoping maybe I just misunderstood what she said on the voice mail. I already bought the gift certificate, anyway.

1. If you come to our front gate and want to get inside, dial 29 on the keypad and hope that Jeff is home since that goes to his cell phone. We don't actually know how to open the door with the phone, but we'll at least know you're there.
2. My graduation from law school is May 20, 2007. There are no tickets, so if you want to suffer through the ceremony, come on along. I am also having some sort of party, hopefully planned by someone who isn't me. So save the date, because after that, you won't see my ass until the beginning of August, after I take the bar.
JENNY OVER AND OUT.

The food, btw, was delicious. Nick did not serve us, though. Some kooky middle-aged ditz was our waitress. She grinned maniacally and said things like, "Ohhhh, isn't it gooooood?" and "You guys are so funny!!" -- even though we hadn't said anything. Then she did a "Psst, see those two ladies over there? One of them ate all of her lamb vindaloo! I don't know she did it, it's really spicy!!"

John, you could save yourself money by taking your mom out to any of the bars that offer dollar burgers on Tuesdays.
I found another band interested in covering a full LP, probably d'Angelo's Voodoo.

I just finished the newer Peter Carey novel, Theft, which was really good. I think I need to read a bunch of his other books, since Illywhacker was good too.

John, I can't believe you've never spent more than $65 on a gift!? Of course, I'm no model for good budgeting seeing as how I'm tens of thousands of dollars in debt. The pastor we'll probably pick for our ceremony suggested that if either of us has any debt, we should try as hard as we can to pay it off before we get married. If I listened to him, I probably wouldn't be able to get married for another 20 years.
Also, Jesse, I LOVE that photo.

The idea of putting together a regular night of bands covering entire LPs beginning-to-end. If this gets rolling, you should bring one of your bands to town and do it.

I wish the Ice Factory would host our album covering project. Then it could become a monthly event (with different bands each time). Speaking of IF, Crap Eng1ne is breaking up.

The album covering idea is great, too bad none of my bands would really fit. The rock band doesn't really do covers. The Kid Jordan Second Line (my new traditional jazz band!) was started to cover a whole album, but it's so obscure that no one would care

It would be cool to take that band to Chicago since our saxophonist lives there and my friend Scott could play bass, but we would need a local dude who can play New Orleans piano.

When would I have ever done this? I mean, I think last Christmas my brother and I spent somewhere in that range, probably a little bit more, on each parent, but that was split between the two of us. Unevenly, since he's a student, but still.
I'm still feeling weird and guilty about the whole thing, especially because of some of the responses I got on this thread. And then Kr said something about how she would've paid for the dinner because she feels like she owes her parents for helping to put her through college. And I was just like, "Huh. That's never occurred to me." I mean, obviously I'm grateful that they did, and I know that not all people are so lucky, but I've never considered that I was forever in their debt or anything -- they've certainly never made me feel that way.
Did I mention my mom makes like four times as much as I do?

As someone whose parents did not help her out with school, I often find myself annoyed with kids who don't seem entirely grateful of said help. It really puts you ahead of the game to start out into the world as an adult without miles of debt. SO APPRECIATE IT! Love, me
