i tried to watch this last night and couldn't make it all the way through. I saw this a LOT in the years after it came out, I realized; and I certainly thought it was the funniest thing ever at the time, a slightly more sophisticated take on python humor, but now it just seems kind of bland and bloodless. also, a lot of kline's timing seems...off.

Interesting in having started this thread I can't say I've seen it in years. Maybe like Princess Bride and most Mel Brooks movies it's best left in the past...

It is love. Absolutely agreed on YF/The Producers being Mel's peak, especially if you also include The Twelve Chairs, which everyone always forgets.

"A Fish Called Wanda" basically lives and dies by the interplay between the 4 main characters. When they're awesome, it's awesome. When they're not, it's not.

Now if you'll excuse me I have more painfully banal, obvious shit to post on other threads.

I remember my parents coming back from seeing "A Fish Called Wanda" at the cinema and trying to explain to me as a (probably) sub-10-year-old boy why it was probably the funniest thing they'd ever seen.

Haven't seen this movie since my Dad took the whole family to see it, having apparently forgotten from the first time he'd seen it (weeks earlier??) just how raunchy it was.

Not sure if this film has any more contemporary cred, but I laughed out loud several times in my first viewing in more than a decade.

Hated this movie, sorry to rain on anyone’s parade.

Haven't seen in forever, but every now and then I remember that my parents took my sister and I to see this when we were 9 and 10, and I realize that I had an awesome childhood.

I've watched it twice and enjoyed it both times, but I think that twice is about my limit for this one and a third screening would just fall flat.

I was just thinking about this the other day thanks to Kevin Kline's brief appearance in the Linda Ronstadt documentary. Like Alfred said it seems to have fallen away a bit but Kline deserved that Oscar.

years ago a coworker & i went to a suburban deli we had heard made good sandwiches. it looked like a mob front, dingy linoleum room with just a table two chairs & a counter. we would have left right then but they had a tv on in the corner that was playing Fish called Wanda - so we ordered, ate some legit great sandwiches & laughed our asses off, best lunch i ever ate

Sometimes I watch this and it seems leaden, dated and overfussily scripted. And sometimes it's a gas. But KK and JLC are classic in either viewing. And my kink for topless Italian Cleese remains undiminished after many decades

However impossible it is to think of John Cleese as anything but a horse's ass now, I watched this thing and realized he was (then) a credible romantic lead.

Kline's winning that Oscar is one of the bigger Oscar wtfs of the last 40 years. He'd won no precursors.

As we all know, winning awards for comedy roles that are not specifically comedy roles is forbidden by the UN Treaty Against Laughter.

I had fond memories of this so decided to watch it again and was surprised by 1) how old-fashioned it was 2) how extremely unpleasant it was

Also that I had forgotten Kevin Kline's existence. He comes across as a kind of younger Steve Martin in this.
