Russell made Flirting With Disaster? But isn't that bad? I was gonna say he's the best American director after Soderberg. I probably like Lynch better anyway. Three Kings is great. Ice Cube best American actor? Boyz N' the Hood, Ghosts of Mars...!!!

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have we found a film that everyone on ILE likes? (heh heh)

Tom, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Call me cynical but if a movie has three stars, and its called three kings, then I think its easy to work out who gets the bullet.

Flirting With Disaster is a magnificent movie - the best screwball comedy of the nineties.

Pete, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

He specifically explains the title on the DVD somewhere, and points out the like two or three different scenes where Jonze refers to the threesome as the "Three Kings". And it's not like Ice Cube is THAT big of a star.

Wheeler, you are drunk.

REVIVE. The NY Times has an article on this very film in Sunday's edition. The writer labels it as increasingly nearing classic status. I find myself agreeing but I always liked the film; current political climate as reason for liking film classic or dud?

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 6 April 2003 04:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's fucking Kelly's Heroes

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 6 April 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

The movie: Classic (I didn't foresee Jonze's death based on the title; I figured if anything was going to come of the "three kings"/"but there's four of us" thing, it'd be Mark Wahlberg whapping him upside the head and saying "but there's four of us, numbnuts").

Current political climate as reason for liking the film: Dud, I guess, but it's a good excuse for people who haven't seen it to do so.

Tom's sum-up upthread - "an action romp with essentially liberal undertones" - Classic, and I'll use that as my hook when getting people to watch it.

Only Dud part of the movie for me, now, is Jamie Kennedy, not because he sucks in it but because I can't see him any more without thinking of him as "The Jamie Kennedy Experience."

current political climate as reason for liking film classic or dud?

Neither really... But it's still too early to tell.

I liked Three Kings back when it was released and I think I like it a little bit more now. I've been meaning to check out the DVD for the extras.

Oh, and for folks interested in the current NYT article, it's here.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 6 April 2003 05:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

classic. it surprises me that the DVD is a midrange price though, and frequently shows up in bargain bins. Where's the deserved love for it?

So is there going to be a sequel to correct that happy ending?

The ending is a bit of a dud.

we rented this at the start of last month because neither of my flatmates had seen it. and the war was coming, etc.

we sent one out on his bike, to the video store, and he had trouble crossing police lines around protester lines in the middle of roads, etc.

I like it a lot and have seen it lots of times as it was one of the few films I had with me in the czech republic for four months.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 6 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Edelstein's a good critic, but it always annoys me when filmcrits talk about war flicks and then don't reference anything before Apocalypse Now (or, almost as bad, maybe makes a token gesture to All Quiet on the Western Front, or, if you're lucky, Paths of Glory). Hell is for Heroes trumps Three Kings for humour, starpower, cynicism and idealism coming and going but never gets referenced. Anyhow, everybody knows Duck Soup's the greatest war flick of all time.

Three Kings: Pig in the city

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I want a Three Kings Saturday morning cartoon, to balance out the Rambo one. They travel around the world having wacky misadventures, always getting into trouble and stuff but then everything works out when they save some refugees and stuff, and George Clooney would look just like Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters, and Mark Wahlberg would be blonde so kids could easily tell which one he was, and they'd have a band (Ice Cube on drums) for no real reason. And a talking dog who wears a basketball jersey.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

And Spike Jonze could get killed in every episode!

BTW Blount is OTM re: Kelly's Heroes - which is still one of my favorites - KH needs a journalist chick though

My favorite thing about Three Kings (among many things) was just that there was so much about it I hadn't expected; I hadn't expected the great often dirty-ized cinematography, nor the suprisingly effectual delivery of Spike Jonze, and the plot of the whole thing was definitely not what I had expected. "Current climate" shmurrate shmlimate, this. movie. rocks.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've had people act it out for me a million times. For the record I do think this is a good movie, just a bit overrated by some people (it still shoulda been a bigger hit).

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it's a very good movie, and while, say, Marky Mark's interrogation scene seems too heavy handed to me (cuz sure, we already know that Iraqis are people too), to some of my friends that scene was a shocking thing to watch. I'm also a big Clooney fan (well, mainly this and Out of Sight), and he does a very good job. Also, Jamie Kennedy's great (both in TK and in his own show)!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've wanted to be George Clooney even before I found out he was Ally's future husband. Apparently he really hates David O. Russell though, has sworn he'll never work with him again, etc., but Marky Mark's in Russell's next one so who knows. Still every interview I've read with the guy I've come away thinking 'whatta asshole'. That Jamie Kennedy show is much better than it has any right to be, though sitting through another "Malibu's Most Wanted" trailer I will shoot myself. I was dragged to that Steve Martin-Queen Latifah movie a couple of weeks ago and beforehand they showed the trailers for "Head of State" and "Malibu's Most Wanted" - it was 'Night of the Caucasion Fa-Shizzles'.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I caught the Jamie Kenndy Xperience a few times really stoned and totally loved it. I saw it sober a few weeks ago and still found it funny, which is way too rare for a sketch comedy show (I don't think I can watch Mr. Show sober ever again -- I tried last night and it was ugly).

George Clooney = totally rad. Did you know he tried out for the Reds at one point? He talked about it with (ugh) Bob Costas in a HBO Real Sports interview last year.

I get the feeling that David O Russell would be hard to work with (he's an "auteur" and all that that entails). Spanking the Monkey was terrible, though Flirting With Disaster had its moments. (he did those, right?)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 7 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

One time, this dude from my company was at my gym, he plays basketball there, and they were having a pickup game. So this other guy keeps screaming at him that he's a ball hog, etc. Which is totally true. "Pass the ball fucker! Pass the ball!" that sort of thing, and my coworker is like all pissed off at him and fighting with him. The other guy? George Clooney.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

George Clooney even before I found out he was Ally's future husband

I have a 100% true, juicy-as-Hi-C story on Georgie which would disprove the ever-likelihood of this proposition, but I'm not going to post it on here; I think I've already discussed it at length in some Ilxaim chat.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/02/movies/02film.html

Warner Brothers has decided not to distribute the director David O. Russell's new antiwar documentary when it re-releases his 1999 Gulf War movie, "Three Kings," this fall, judging it "totally inappropriate" to do so in a political season, a studio spokeswoman said.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Then whats the fucking point of re-releasing it?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

"This came out to be a documentary that condemns, basically, war," said the spokeswoman, Barbara Brogliatti. "This is supposed to be a special edition of 'Three Kings,' not a polemic about war."

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Did Barb watch the movie or what?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:03 (nineteen years ago) link

no, there was a separate documentary to go with the re-release.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:04 (nineteen years ago) link

i think bill meant "did barb watch THREE KINGS or not," cuz it condemns war too... uh right bill?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Barbara Brogliatti ... wasn't she in "Spinal Tap"?

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 23:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, if the documentary is unsavory because it condemns war, then why bother re-releasing the movie? For shits?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:41 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't know if the movie "condemns War" as such, but it certainly is skeptical toward the US's first war on iraq. although it could potentially be construed as a polemic in favor of having taken the war all the way to baghdad.

it's kind of a trip to realize what a gamble it was to cast Spike in this ($42M then, now $65M) budget film, you have to remember this was pre-Malkovich & pre-Jackass. At the time he was known mainly for directing skateboarding videos (esp. Video Days, one of the best skate videos ever) & music videos ("100%", "Cannonball", "Buddy Holly", "Sabotage", "Da Funk", etc.)

But here he was doing a legitimate stretch acting role in his Hollywood debut, and I'm pretty sure he did his own stunt when his car gets blown up.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 06:47 (three years ago) link

There were probably lots of gen x cusps who didn't realize it was Spike in the "Praise You" video or who didn't really care either way. But by that point in history I figured he was kind of a counter culture celebrity.
