michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Emma, we can't turn off facial hair.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Michael - I need to mention that the traditional criteria still appply.

And Emma - hello! - men produce stubble all the time. Isn't it just a matter of letting it reside on the face or not?

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

As long as someone isn't *mashing* their face against yours (or other parts - eek!) stubble feels lovely.

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

lara - is that the 3-day thing? 'cause that could makes thing awkward as i'm busy saturday.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

*terrified that someone is going to tell me I'm doing it all wrong*

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think my poor grasp of human biology is to blame as I think I see it like Samson, only rather than the strength being in his hair, the testosterone lives in the stubble. Therefore no stubble = testosterone must find somewhere else to take up residence. I don't know, men are a mystery to me.

Emma, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Michael! No!

Stubble isn't my only criteria. Obv.

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have 5 day stubble at the moment (I'm another one cursed by sensitive skin) of course this is equal to someone who grows hair at a normal rate of about two and a half days. So I'll probably shave tomorrow. It's niice and soft at the moment though.

chris (chris), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mmmm. Soft stubble.

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

FEAR MY MANLY BEARD.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

What do you use this fearful tool of masculinity for, then?

Beyond covering the odd spot and keeping your face warm, obv.

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, the usuual; general carnage, terror, intimidation, blah blah blah.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oooh. I've got a funny feeling Andrew Farrell might like to run his fingers through it. Woudl you let him?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's going to have to fight my wife first. Then he'll have to fight me. NO ONE TOUCHES THE BEARD OF DOOM WITHOUT PASSING THE GAUNTLET.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

meep.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hate to imagine what's in the gauntlet. Dr. Who collectibles and giant Cure and Prince posters, probably.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Or an axe-wielding wife??

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Combined, it's a fearsome scenario.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is she hairy too?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

No.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I... can't... remember...

I think I'm in the anti-stubble league. For a start, I like girlie boys who have trouble growing stubble at all, and for a second, I have really sensitive skin which gets very easily irritated by stubble.

kate, Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

This year I have decided to shave more often. My stubble = result of laziness.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Stubble looks great, feels terrible -- I have sensitive skin and I've been known to break out in a rash after kissing particularly stubbly men.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have perma-whiskers. Even when I shave it looks like I've got stubble. Like in that episode of The Simpsons where Homer shaves, looks at himself in the mirror and he's all nice and clean shaven, turns around and his 'shadow' pops back onto his face. That's me, that is! Bah. Bane of my life. People keep asking me when I'm going to have a shave, the gits.

Hairy blokes = lottsa testosterone
'Junior shaver' types = not so much testosterone.
Well, that's my story anyway.

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 16 January 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm in the anti-stubble league too. i have veeery sensitive skin, and it sucks to get a rash on yer chin!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 16 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

stubble looks alright but really its just a buisance, as are beards, to try and kiss. i want to kiss LIPS not BRISTLES!

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 16 January 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I loathe, detest and despise my beard and anything to do with it, and murder it daily. I have no idea what others think of this per se, but one time a friend said I would look better with a mustache. I drew some hair across my upper lip and immediately frightened her into a retraction.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned Sanchez!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 17 January 2003 03:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Even worse.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Stubble = dud. Owwwwwwwww.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

i likes the stubble

minna (minna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Stubble can look hot, but in my experience it feels really painful. One Monday morning the admin took me aside, because my mouth looked battered and she was worried. She was relieved that nothing more violent than kissing had happened.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

my girlfriend won't let me shave off my winter-break-lethargy stubble-becoming-beard. So I guess she likes it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Stubble hurts, it's not nice, it makes yer face all red and any other sensitive areas your man might wanna kiss. Death to all stubble!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 09:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Red rough patches on chin are not nice, but kissing is and so is nicking their aftershave balm to make it better. Kissing fun outweighs the stubble rash.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmmmm Clinique Happy aftershave balm.....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

My bf's stubble is tres cute, but also I am in love with his after shave (though I've never checked what kind he uses)... It just makes me melt...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Napalm?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Agent Orange.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Only if Sarah is vegetation, surely? (I am not saying this isn't the case, this is the internet after all)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know it's herbicide. I was just following the Napalm thought. Vietnam, the maimed, birth defects and all that. Jeez....

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

It sure is a sorry episode in US history.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

not as sorry as the episode where mr. mooney and i got stuck in the bank vault.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

five years pass...

i hate shaving. i have a date tonight and im thinking of not bothering to shave. she better like it.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 2 June 2008 10:57 (fifteen years ago) link

You sure are making an effort.

the pinefox, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i might pluck one hair.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link

playing hard to get huh?

Maria, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I absolutely fucking loathe shaving.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i quite like it, i stopped for other reasons

electricsound, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:34 (fifteen years ago) link

haven't shaved for about 7 months now, been using the lovely trimmer i got as a christmas present, much better for yr skin and appearance (no horrible cut marks or abrasions, plus groovy stubble)

Just got offed, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i tried to wax my facial hair once several years back but i didnt wanna get proper strips so just used weak ones which of course didnt work.

i might stipulate that she shave somewhere on her body just to make things fair.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:38 (fifteen years ago) link

She probably already did.

the pinefox, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:40 (fifteen years ago) link

begin as you mean to continue. if you don't like shaving and don't often do it, there's no point pretending you will in the future. might as well be upfront with her about it!

Rubyredd, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:43 (fifteen years ago) link

being upfront is a bit overrated.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:46 (fifteen years ago) link

That's true.

the pinefox, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Be deceitful.

the pinefox, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i like to create the image of being loaded then slowly unravel the layers as i get to know a person to show i am in fact on the poverty line.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:55 (fifteen years ago) link

there's an in-between level of a few days of stubble that's good (past prickly, but not yet a beard). if you are not there, shave!

Maria, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i didnt shave.

i wanna shave her though.

(and no not in a bearded lady way)

;)

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 2 June 2008 22:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't like the feel of it. This could be because when I was a small child my dad did this 'tickle torture' equivalent where he's rub his stubbly face all over my non-stubbly face. It was called 'getting whiskered.'

Abbott, Monday, 2 June 2008 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Looks okay if you're Hugh Laurie but not that many duders can pull it off.

Abbott, Monday, 2 June 2008 22:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not a ladies, so.

I prefer a cooter with a beard to a shaven one or worst of all, stubbly.

Oilyrags, Monday, 2 June 2008 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link

my wife abhors facial hair which is lucky cause i can't grow more than a van dyke and a pubestache

tremendoid, Monday, 2 June 2008 23:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i do give good stubble, always have

tremendoid, Monday, 2 June 2008 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link

wish i could connect it from the chin to the temples convincingly but alas

tremendoid, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 00:00 (fifteen years ago) link

i was once complimented on my "money stubble" by a drunk college freshman who was, sadly, lacking any of his own.

he was right.

gbx, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 00:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i like it. stubble or beard though, no in betweens. i do have a perverse attachment to goatees, but they're usually major warning signs.

strgn, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 04:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I absolutely fucking loathe shaving.

^^^This. I've shaved myself clean about four times ever and each time I'm reminded why I don't do that because the combination of soooo sensitive plus massive amounts of razor bumps means I can't shave again without destroying my face. Then it's several days of stubble, which is the worst part because it feels like gravel is being pressed through my face. I usually keep my facial hair in the in between state Maria describes. If it's long enough to get in my mouth, I know it's time to trim.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 06:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, the problematic shaving areas are all around my chin and mouth. My cheeks shave just fine, so sometimes I trim it down to a goatee.

In addition to my physical problems with it, I strongly dislike the way I look cleanshaven when I have long hair. Short hair + cleanshaven works, though.
