haven't heard this yet. looks like there's filler -- 2 cds but nothing from their 1970 album? anyway their singles are great garage rock.

their singles are great garage rock

Pretty generic, though, right? Which Seger's early singles almost never were. (At least, that's the impression I've always had about them. In fact, I guess in my mind I've always thought of the Rationals as, say, Detroit's answer to the Rascals or something. Blue-eyed-soul rock. Which is fine, but not exactly indispensible since Detroit already had Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. I could be way off, though.) (Also just looked it up and discovered that the Rationals, Rascals, and Ryder all recorded their debut singles in 1965 -- So it's likely more like they were on similar wavelengths than anybody mimicking anything else.)

Agree with Mark's point about Meijer as a union shop, btw; now wonder whether that was an impetus for Seger's decision (in which case, it's admittedly an very cool move), or mere coincidence. ("Thrifty Fakirs" also sounds familiar, deep in my Michigan-smartass subconscious.)

they are committed to familyness. i think we can all get behind that:

Familyness
We are a company that is committed to you; we care about you and your family by providing positive solutions to your everyday problems.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Whole lotta letter 'y's in that statement. Just saying.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

how do you pronounce meijer anyway? meeeeeejer or major or my-er or may-her or meeeeeJar or my-whore?

scott seward, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

just remember, ned, there's no WHY? in familyness.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

It's "my-er". My in-laws are from Grand Rapids and are big Meijer boosters---they even have nicknames for the various Meijers near their house. We shopped there for a while when we lived in South Bend. It's just like Wal-Mart, big and crowded.

Euler, Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:58 (fourteen years ago) link

There is no WHY? in familyness. i am totally making that a t-shirt. I'm gonna sell it exclusively at Meijers.

today i saw this guy wearing a t-shirt that read:

gay? that's fine by me.

(and i couldn't figure out whether he was fine with ME or other people being gay or if when people yelled GAY! at him that he was fine by that. like, it wouldn't bother him. i'm still trying to figure it out...)

After fruitlessly search t'internet for a download, I found the '66-'67 boot from this store:

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 5 November 2009 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i encourage everyone here and everyone that you know to sell cdr bootlegs of bob seger's early singles. then you might actually see an official release. of course, they remain on youtube (some, not all) and nobody seems to care, so, i dunno...

scott seward, Thursday, 5 November 2009 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I ordered a copy on the strength of youtube, I'm a sucker for anything with that much vox top boost abuse in it.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 5 November 2009 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Wow, that is one stunningly pointless compilation. From all of Back in '72 he selects an indifferent Allman Brothers cover instead of the title cut or "Rosalie" or even "Turn The Page"? And two tracks from Smokin' O.P.s, even though the '05 reissue is still (afaik) available in stores?? And adds George Lucas-style "extensive re-recordings" to "Long Song Comin'" - as well as new horns/vocals/whatever to a buncha '80s songs that were probably left unreleased for good reason, if they weren't up to the quality standards set by "Shakedown" and "Like A Rock"??? And finally calls it "Vol. 1", which implies that many more equally haphazard grab-bags are on the way???? That goes beyond mere indifference - it's as though he deliberately spent a lot of effort creating the most awesomely awful compilation imaginable.

I'll stick with my CDs and remastered-from-scratchy-vinyl CDrs, thanks. (And will cheerfully assemble a real nice proper collection from anybody who requests one.)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Will you now. (Please?)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd like that too! I haven't heard any of Seeger's early stuff, but this thread suggests that I need to.

tylerw, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Bob? That's fine by me.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Heck, count me in, too. It'd be nice to have all that stuff (some of which I don't have in any form whatsoever) in one place.

xhuxk, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link

If you'll put something up it would be great---I love the 70s albums I have but I've only ever heard the earlier songs on youtube.

Euler, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I think there's a second Rationals set in the pipeline, with the 70 album and some other stuff. Should be out next year.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 7 November 2009 18:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd love to get in on that Seger stuff.

I wonder about that Think Rational comp, mostly because I have a previous Rationals comp also called Think Rational, which is mostly meh. Lots of muddy recordings of songs that probably sounded great live in the moment, but haven't held up.

Morgan's shows are still great, even though going out means convincing yourself to see a band called Powertrane, which, no surprise, plays some pretty Blues Hammer stuff. It's got a bunch of great local musicians in it though, and they have a hell of a lot of fun on stage (including Chris Taylor, the guitarist for Mazinga and The Avatars, who's unfortunately never going to make it out of Southeast Michigan).

He's also pretty huge in England and Scandinavia—well, relatively. But he can support touring with a twelve-member band in the UK, and he's got projects with the guys from the Hives that are OK.

I know that a Sonic's Rendezvous box (which Scott was also in) came out a couple years back, though I never had $50 at a time to get it. Oh, and if you get a chance to hear it, the Scott's Pirates stuff that he did in the '80s is pretty fun too—sort of in between Bob Seger and Marshal Crenshaw.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Saturday, 7 November 2009 19:22 (fourteen years ago) link

MVB I also would welcome a well curated early comp

sleeve, Saturday, 7 November 2009 19:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I would as well.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 7 November 2009 21:41 (fourteen years ago) link

hai, MVB! i too would like in on some of this hot early Seger action please. da man can't bust our music, man! word.

the not-fun one (Ioannis), Sunday, 8 November 2009 08:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Wow, such popular demand! I've gotten a 79-minute assortment all assembled and ready to go. Anyone who wants one, just email and let me know whether you'd prefer a CD-R or files sent electronically. (And I'd appreciate any recommendations regarding the best, simplest way to achieve the latter, other than simply sending mp3s via email, which is my current default method. I'm fairly clueless about this stuff.)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Sunday, 8 November 2009 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Giorgio, amateurist, I haven't forgot about you guys! I just need to know whether you'd prefer a CD-R or emailed files...

Anybody else? Tripmaker? Tylerw?

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 16 November 2009 03:18 (fourteen years ago) link

you got my email right? let me know if you need more technical advice.

sleeve, Monday, 16 November 2009 06:04 (fourteen years ago) link

hi there. i guess emailed files would be best! also: you are fantastic. thanks!

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Monday, 16 November 2009 07:07 (fourteen years ago) link

need this so bad!

Brio, Monday, 16 November 2009 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

just sent an email! thanks, man! I usually use sendspace.com -- just drag the mp3s into a new folder, create an archive zip file of that folder and upload.

tylerw, Monday, 16 November 2009 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Appreciate the sendspace info, tylerw - by now, you'll be the first recipient (if I didn't screw it up somehow...)

Sleev, your CDR is in the mail; ditto xhuxk. Anybody know Bob Seger's address? - I'd like to send him one too! And tell him that I'd happily pay 15 bucks for a nice shiny remastered and lovingly-packaged version of same...

Durian Durian (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 16:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Anybody know Bob Seger's address?

Not me. But he lives in Orchard Lake, Michigan, and his middle-school-age kids are due to attend my alma mater West Bloomfield High School. Or at least that's where he was two years ago, when I interviewed him for Billboard. (I had to give his publicist my phone # in New York, and he called me. He didn't talk much, if at all, about the status of his oldest music, but it's possible I didn't prod him much.)

By the way, do people know about this book? It's not bad. Great photos, anyway. Not a ton of text, but what's there is often informative:

Yay, apparently I did it right: SENDSPACE FILES FOR ALL!! I'll try and get everyone taken care of tonight; if I overlook anyone, just give me a reminder in a day or two.

xpost - Pretty cool that Bob still lives in Michigan. Info-wise, the best website I know of is segerfile.com. The creator flat-out claims it's the best Seger site on the web, and it's hard to disagree.

So apparently a bunch of the songs (e.g. "Mongrel") are only 15 seconds long? Did something go wrong in my download? Are any of the rest of you who got this finding the same thing?

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe those are the wma files? i was actually just coming on here to ask if anyone knew how to convert wmas to mp3s ... The mp3s sound great, btw! But I can't play wmas on my itunes ...

tylerw, Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:02 (fourteen years ago) link

would dig Mongrel; am presently rocking to Ramblin' Gamblin' Man (the album); "Black Eyed Girl" is pretty heavy!

Yah Kid A (Euler), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

no problem. i'll wait a bit to see if anyone else wants and i'll plan on sending this afternoon

controlled noise pollution (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 21 November 2009 17:16 (fourteen years ago) link

The version of iTunes for PC will automatically convert WMAs to MP3s or M4As when you drag the WMAs into the library. iTunes for Mac does not do this, sadly. I took Myonga's comp to my work and converted it there.
