for Japanese: Izakaya Ten in Chelsea. Great pub food. Ushi Wakamaru in SoHo/West Village. Best sushi south of mid-town. EN Brasserie in West Village. Upscale small plates. LAN in East Village. Great Steakhouse.

for good thai in manhattan...Zabb City on 13th and 2nd, I think.
― dan selzer, Sunday, 31 August 2008 04:55 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, what Steve Shasta said. I think LAN is great, has good sushi + shabu shabu + other cooked dishes + steak. decent enough looking room - not super stylish like a morimoto but not like a hole in the wall either.

we just moved crosstown to the upper west side, (upper -- 99th st.) and are finding our way around. anybody know some good eats? apart from the taco truck on 96th st?
― tipsy mothra, Sunday, 31 August 2008 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link
Popeyes on Essex/Delancey. yummy!
― phil-two, Sunday, 31 August 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link
PS we didn't end up going into manhattan the other night, so no sushi.
BUT we did try mary's fish camp in the slope -- it was average, nothing to write home about.

went to "olea mediterranean taverna" in fort greene last night and had some awesome "turkish cigars" and a pretty good paella. sangria was ok. kinda overdone on 'atmosphere' tho which incl. some white-conversed v-necked flamenco-style guitarist on a stool right next to us whose repertoire featured 'what a wonderful world'

"peaches" in bed stuy has got some good nu-americana or whatever you wanna call it--good soul food/comfort dishes made w/ local organic ingredients. waiter and hostess were really nice; ricotta was delicious. good fries and sandwiches.

finally went to the red hook soccer fields. food was great and the lines weren't the crazy hassle I was expecting so all in all it was an A+. had ceviche, pupusas (pork, jalapeno, cheese) and a pork huarache
also went to Tia Pol, v. good but always pretty crowded

I had this same meal on saturday. also the best horchata i've had in nyc.

good to hear. things were a complete mess when we went; food (save for the ceviche) wasn't the usual deliciousness, either.
― lauren, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link
my one mistake in our red hook odyssey was that I forgot to go to the liquor store with all the small batch bourbons (LeNell's). been meaning to check it out.

me too! we meant to go after eating, but we wasted so much time waiting in line that we had to hurry out of there.

i want to say this without sound like THAT GUY but i dont know how--are the trucks in red hook really that big a deal?? there were like six of those at every farmers market in LA.
mexican food that is available all over the place in LA is a big deal in NYC, yes.

great dinner at blue hill last night. i felt like every dish i had involved corn in some way but i was OK with that. girlfriend's turkey was probably the best turkey dish ive ever eaten... cooked to perfect softness in some kind of corn/pancetta/tomato puree. egg/corn/mushroom for my starter was the highlight--honestly i may have been 'disappointed' by my lamb which was overpowered slightly by the anise and mint pesto... but thats only if i was looking for something to complain about. waiter recommended a great bottle of wine, and they started us off with some fantastic little cherry tomatoes.

I really want to go back to Blue Hill at Stone Barns -- maybe just for the more affordable 3 course lunch.

― Mohammed Butt (max), Saturday, 20 September 2008 13:56 (fifteen years ago) link

― Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2008 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link
Weirdly, it looks like the NYC one is actually cheaper than Stone Barns.
― Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 20 September 2008 14:00 (fifteen years ago) link
Actually, it's hard to compare because Stone Barns only offers fixed price right now and the menus aren't available.

two courses + dessert + wine + tip will run you more than $70/person at the village one

The Smoke Joint and its sister sammich/moonshine cornershop, Lil Pig, are like the most successful thing in the neighborhood right now. Smoke Joint makes a meeeaaan basket of fries that made me very happy yesterday. Lil Pig started out as strictly lunch, but since the owners were getting drunk there at night, they bottled some house spirits, renovated the bar seating and adjoined the space with the Smoke Joint right next door. Now both places are boppin late. This is half a block down from me, so i'm pleased.

the nyc blue hill is sooooooooooo good. i like the atmosphere, as well - sedate but not fussy.
re: redhook ballfields: not sound like a different kind of "that guy," but the set-up now is nothing like it used be. there were more vendors, more people cooking, a more communal picnic kind of vibe. the way it is at the moment is basically a bunch of people waiting in line at lunch trucks, and i can see why you were underwhelmed.
― lauren, Saturday, 20 September 2008 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link
oops - that should be "not to sound..."

i think we ate at smoke joint during the working-out-the-kinks phase. the only thing that i really enjoyed was the coleslaw.

Hecho en Dumbo was surprisingly good -- similar style food to Bonita but better and even, I think, slightly cheaper.
