jaymc: due to some computer viral issues right now, it's taking forever to search through my yahoo e-mails at the moment. searching through ILX for comments seems to be quicker for me. Starting a new job on Monday with a better computer so then that won't be an issue, but for the first 50 I think I'll do it like this. Send your comments for anything that has yet to appear!

Damn, I guess the Curse of the Split Votes is going to strike Saint Etienne in the mid-60's?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:30 (nineteen years ago) link

'Angel', by Massive Attack was 21 on my list - I find it odd that it only tied for 79

It was 7th on mine!

SAINT ETIENNE - "You're In A Bad Way" (294 points, 17 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Youre_In_A_Bad_Way.jpg

1.Saint Etienne - “You’re In A Bad Way”

"This is how retro should be done. This is how kitsch should look, and sound. It should bounce like a space-hopper and be mixed like a
beautiful cocktail. Sipped by a girl of dubious-origin on a beach,
while a ropey porn-movie plays in the background."

Fuck, if "He's on the Phone" is next then I'm trashing my apartment.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:42 (nineteen years ago) link

i still can't get over how low "Hypnotize" is, I think that's the only one so far I voted for, and I mighta had that one top ten.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

It's gotta great beat, but I have to admit the only lyric I can remember is "no car payment."

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

i wish i hadn't sold my st etienne records

amateur!!st, Sunday, 7 November 2004 19:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Only "Girl/Boy Song" so far (although I had votes for different Wu-Tang, Biggie and Destiny's Child songs.)

SAINT ETIENNE - "Nothing Can Stop Us" (297 points, 14 votes, 2 first place votes)

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Nothing_Can_Stop_Us.c.jpg

The first single to feature Sarah Cracknell, unless I'm mistaken, and still one of their best cuts. Not sure about the cover art, though!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

This is getting ridiculous.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

My 12" doesn't look like that!

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, what an unlikely occurance...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

That cover is horrendous.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

JEFF BUCKLEY - "Hallelujah" (304 points, 18 votes)

http://www.liquidgnome.com/JeffBuckley/images/hall.jpg

"First time I listened to it I was lying in bad with the flu at 3 in the morning. It's just TOO lovely, and made the feel even worse than I did at the time, which was pretty bad!"

- Johnney B

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

A maxi-single is an American term for a 12" or CD EP, isn't it?

The UK issue was like this:

http://www.saint.etienne.net/ec/Nothing_Can_Stop_Us.jpg

but less blurry.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

-- Kevin Gilchrist (KevinGil14...), November 7th, 2004.

a single that doubles as a tampon?

Uh, is that a joke? "Escargot, my car go" ring a bell?

The squillion-way splitting of the St Etienne vote is no less devastating for it's utter predictability. *cries*

Yes, I think there were comments to that effect on the noms thread.
But we still have "He's on the Phone" to root for!

MISSY ELLIOTT - "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" (326 points, 25 votes)

http://www.thehumangenomeproject.com/missy/rain.jpg

"Supa Dupa Fly remains her shining, most coherent, razzle-dazzling moment."

- Vic

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Fuck, "Mama Said Knock You Out" must be one of the best straight pop/rock/rap songs ever, I love it so much. That I only rated it #14 says more about how lame and soulless and prog-damaged I am than about the song itself. It's such an amazing performance; he jumps at you and doesn't let go of your collar for the rest of the song, spitting out the simplest rhymes with such aggro poise that they become oratory. In case anyone thought jocks couldn't be poets.

xpost "The Rain" rules too. I love that Ann Peebles song too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 7 November 2004 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I suppose I should be happy that "Troy," "The Rain" and LL beat Jeff Buckley.

HAPPY MONDAYS - "Kinky Afro" (329 points, 22 votes)

http://home.dialix.com/~u3336/factory/images/302_7b.jpg

"I remember Jess nominated this song for Best Opening Line ('son i'm thirty, i only went with your mother cos she's dirty'). Quite OTM."

-- Aaron A.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

My #2 ends up 64, my #1 at 83.

But seriously, "Halcyon" at 64???

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll take it through to #51 tonight.

interesting results so far, and even moreso later on...

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

A lot of my very high picks are already here.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

but what if you voted hallelujah, the rain, and troy all really high?

anyways, there weren't 64 songs in the 90s better than troy FFS

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I could send you some comments as well, Gear, if you need them.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm thrilled to see 3 St. Etienne tracks together, although I would have much prefered so see them in the '20s. Still have hopes for "He's on the phone".

daavid (daavid), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

BTW I absolutely love the cover of "Nothing Can Stop Us"!

daavid (daavid), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

It keeps making me laugh, I'll give it that.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

good list, I'm just waiting for the surge of american indie.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, yeah, I'm waiting for the other foot to fall, when the US indie vote exerts it's dominance.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

5 of my picks have shown up so far. i wonder if there are any voters whose every pick will appear in this list.

no jungle, hardcore, or techno yet, this is either a good or bad thing.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:12 (nineteen years ago) link

You're not counting the two Orbital songs as "techno"? (or "Ray of Light", har har)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

i forget what i voted for!! troy is the only one so far i am sure i voted for although i am pretty sure about a couple others

artiste (artiste), Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i just looked at my ballot and realized i didn't vote for either opp or the humpty dance, and therefore have very little right to bitch about their low placement.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Let the bitching continue! Honestly I would have liked to start this list on Monday, to get more traffic whilst people were at work and online, but I don't know how much time I'll have this week, with the new job, final tallying of the albums vote, and other shite.

anyway, on to 60-51...

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I was about to bump this, but thinking about how to do it so it didn't look like that was what I was doing...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 8 November 2004 03:49 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm pretty shocked at t.r.o.y.'s low showing
