I don't think wipeout is that good tho

wipeout 2097 til I die

coz (webinar), Thursday, 29 October 2009 20:48 (nine years ago) link

okay, if you put it like that, all is forgiven. I thought you meant the whole series. First wipeout is indeed unplayable shit.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 29 October 2009 20:58 (nine years ago) link

Uncharted 2 is a clear front-runner for game of the year, I think, but I have more to play.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:11 (nine years ago) link

I am trying to get through Uncharted 1 to get to the gooey sweetness that is the sequel, but it's not making it easy. I just hit another jetski level, where someone actually thought to themselves "You know what's fun? Piloting a low-powered watercraft upriver against rapids, stopping dead in the water every thirty seconds to shoot instant-death barrels, and fighting enemies with preternaturally accurate aim. Oh, and you know how we gave the player an infinite-ammo grenade launcher the first time? Fuck that, let's try giving him a pistol. That'll teach him to complain. On ILX. Three years in the future."

You don't understand, I have to. It is a sick compulsion. Plus I'm under the delusion that I'm somehow improving my skill at aiming with a joypad so I won't totally embarrass myself in multiplayer.

Okay, serious WTFs at the plot twist, where they decide to stop ripping off <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190838/";>this</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082971/";>this</a> and start ripping off <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412704/";>this</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087015/";>this</a>. (spoilers obviously)

There, hopefully that'll work

Telephone - the good news is that you're very close to the end of the game, but the bad news is that the end is the most mishandled section of the game

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 15 November 2009 20:08 (nine years ago) link

I've already gotten tired of the RARGH BOOGIDY BOOGIDY shit in the German bunker, though I did like how the only weapons available are WWII-era German submachine guns. REALISMS!

s1ocki- Assuming you're not just fucking with me, the revised links or the original botched html ones? I double-checked, they should all point properly to IMDB...

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Sunday, 15 November 2009 20:36 (nine years ago) link

yeah the end is crap.

cutty, Sunday, 15 November 2009 20:38 (nine years ago) link

end is the worst part of the second game, but how is the worst part of U1 anything other than the second jetski bit?

The Enemy (jamescobo), Monday, 16 November 2009 00:47 (nine years ago) link

No kidding, if the ending of the game somehow manages to be worse than the upriver level I'm breaking the fucking disc in half.

Uncharted 2 is so awesome.

windy = white, carl = black (polyphonic), Monday, 16 November 2009 20:07 (nine years ago) link

Finished UC2 today and the ending was better than the first but still disappointing but that is in part due to the awesomeness that comes before it. The game does start slowly but from chapter 5 to chapter 22 everything about it is perfect, especially 'Desperate Times' and 'Locomotion', it's a ridiculous amount of fun and the pacing is almost perfect. I was kinda bummed that Sully wasn't in the game more though, love that guy but all the characters are pretty great which just sucks you in more.

Good interview here with the developers.

i just didnt understand why they end the game with baddies who are basically world of warcraft characters

Alf, Lord Melmacsyn (s1ocki), Monday, 16 November 2009 22:42 (nine years ago) link

but uh there are SPOILERS here too

i'm not done with the game yet but it was kind of heartbreaking and frustrating in that part where you wake up in the tibetan village and you follow dude around past all these happy kids playing, bright colorful houses, etc. and you just fucking know that there's going to have to be another level where you go back through and everything's all blown up and gray and terrible and there are tons of bad guys. i kept hoping they would defy this expectation but knew it was going to happen and it kind of pissed me off.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 00:30 (nine years ago) link

it's just a video game :/

cutty, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 00:33 (nine years ago) link

I am about halfway through that level.

On the one hand, I agree. On the other hand, it is an awesome terrain for a gunfight.

uncharted 2 is pretty good eh? finally got around to it and for some reason i was kinda cynical about it, as much as i had enjoyed the first one, but this is really great. they have made such a virtue of scripted events. the whole thing is so seamless and there have only been rare occasions when the gameplay has been less than totally engaging. i approve of this game.

srsly... at first I was all 'I bought a PS3 for this?!' but then I started walking through the snow and I was like 'justified!!'

cozen, Monday, 22 March 2010 21:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm near the end now (thought I'd play through on hard first) and I've been consistently blown away throughout not just by the set-pieces but by the platforming, the writing, the graphics and the actual performance of the engine... the frame rate is so consistent even when there's lots going on. naughty dog did a great job here

the platforming altho v.linear is just in perfect service of making you feel like a total badass who can get anywhere nevermind how difficult and it mixes it up enough with little realtime cutscenes of breaking scenery so it doesn't really get boring

surprised how charming the characters actually are too; I was apprehensive that the dialogue was going to be too quip-y and wiseass-y but - although everyone is kind of a smartass - it's not overly annoying. cute without being irritating

tensin is a badass

Admittedly, it's nowhere near as bad (and when it works is funny and exhilarating and action-movie-y), but I think "Cat and Mouse" is this game's jetski level. WAY too much instant death, and now that I'm at the segment where I'm supposed to destroy the tank, the fuckers with rocket launchers keep dropping them OFF THE GODDAMN ROOFS. INTO THE STREET. WHERE THE TANK IS.

i played the first scene from part 1 about a year ago and it felt really clunky.. i was supposed to be shooting things from a boat but i just kept getting housed

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 15 July 2010 15:25 (nine years ago) link

I didn't start really loving UC1 until after Sully gets shot (not that Sully didn't own, but that's just where the game started kicking much ass).

UC2 is, as described elsewhere, unfuckwithable though. somewhat overrated but only because everyone who plays it has so much goddamn fun that they gloss over all the less-than-perfect stuff. the end boss can eat many dicks though.

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Thursday, 15 July 2010 17:29 (nine years ago) link

So, so much better. In every possible way. I got the impression Naughty Dog had been playing a lot of Valve games, since a lot of the game's approach (pacing, setpieces, competent NPC companion) is straight from the Half-Life 2 school of design.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Friday, 16 July 2010 00:08 (nine years ago) link

ya UC2 is amazing until it turns into world of warcraft at the end
