lxy changed my mind about rum, i didn't think it was very good before

Peepoop Patel (harbl), Thursday, 29 October 2009 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't either, but she showed me the light!

the pyrat was... i'm not sure which. it had a charm with a buddha or something on it hung around the neck. it was too sweet.

@harbl & tehresa: LOL :) <3
@am0n: i've got a cupboard of expensive, "good" rums that i don't want to drink, so i'll await your verdict before trying the centenario; plz report back.
@carne asada: really? not for me, sailor jerry.

Peepoop Patel (harbl), Thursday, 29 October 2009 19:35 (fourteen years ago) link

@am0n: nepalese rum! scotte's says it's good, anyway. friend brought some old monk from india ($3 at the duty-free, i think?). not so hot.
@carne asada: try better rum, you will be more of a rum drinker.

PHEAR MY POORAPULT (jjjusten), Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

but. i thought you would drink anything?

lxy, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:33 (fourteen years ago) link

jjj i thought it was my no go too, for the longest time!
maybe you need to try again with the right rum.

tehresa, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean, it's still not my go-to or favorite by any means, but i hate it much less than i thought i did and have been able to move past my bad college rum experiences :)

tehresa, Thursday, 29 October 2009 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

oh ill drink anything, but i dont always enjoy it (i hear there are pictures on the interwebs to this effect).

i broke my college sponsored tequila ban successfully, rum has actually just kind of never been my thing, there is a flavor in there that makes me go yurrrghhh

found the ron zacapa centenario. i don't know how to rate it but its not living up to the reviews. gonna buy the pampero and do a comparison. spied some bottles of mt gay extra old, matusalem and cockspur 12. also saw a $180 bottle of pappy van winkle >:O

luol deng (am0n), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 04:50 (fourteen years ago) link

cockspur 12 is so so good.

eclipse is the only mt. gay i've liked. (drinking it right now)

you will never regret buying pampero.

lxy, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 05:21 (fourteen years ago) link

what about flor de cana

luol deng (am0n), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 05:38 (fourteen years ago) link

also why don't you want to drink your expensive rums

luol deng (am0n), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 05:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yes.

all of the fdc ambers i've tasted are very good. haven't had the top of the line.

not much difference between the years, maybe? not when mixing anyway.

lxy, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 05:52 (fourteen years ago) link

xp because they're not good! i would drink them right up if i liked them!

I've never had rum at all, as far as I know, but am interested to give it a try. Suggestions?
I'm coming as a whisk(e)y drinker, if that makes any difference, and particularly enjoy more heartily flavoured varieties.

If I can get it in a supermarket here in the UK then even better.

Not many votes on this poll, sadly, so I don't lay too much stock in its results.

Thanks rum drinking friends.

krakow, Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

so do you want something that you can drink on its own or with a little ice?

As a whiskey drinker you'll definitely skew toward the aged rums - if you're okay with sweeter notes a lot of them (Ron Zacapa Centenario, Pampero, El Dorado, etc.) have a very developed brown sugar taste which is pretty delicious but definitely sweeter than the caramels in whiskey. Any of the aged rum agricoles from Martinique will be less syrupy and sharper (distilled from cane sugar rather than molasses), also delicious. Not sure about availability in the UK, though.

I DIED, Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah some less-sweet options would be a nice clement from martinique or maybe appleton estate reserve which is real tasty.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm looking for something to drink sans mixer. With or without ice, as appropriate.

I'm certainly partial to a sweetness of taste; I very much enjoy Amaretto, Glayva and Drambuie for example.

krakow, Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

if you like it a little sweeter, this is a good sippin' drink

i actually wrote a little column about rum this summer, but instead of linking that i'll just link you to my principal source, which was the guy who publishes the gifted rum guide. he has a long list of recommended rums on his website.
