Andrews gutted there with the king high straight flush, poor dude!

Mark C, Sunday, 23 March 2008 10:14 (sixteen years ago) link

and it's not even a cash game so he doesn't get his bad beat bonus

ken c, Sunday, 23 March 2008 11:00 (sixteen years ago) link

actually no idea if fulltilt do those

ken c, Sunday, 23 March 2008 11:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I think they do, but only in specified games.

That was a $6 sng, heads-up. Maybe my one and only royal flush, and I was able to snag SIX DOLLARS with it.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 23 March 2008 15:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm feeling particularly flush (ba dum chhhhhh) at the moment, not to mention sorely out of practise; any chance of another ilx game?

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 10:50 (sixteen years ago) link

would love one although don't think i can do it this weekend. next sunday? (or heaven forbid - a weekday!??!?!?!)

ken c, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 10:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I ventured out of my usual SNGs and went to a cash game.

I got severely butthurt.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I can usually at least break even in a cash game, but can't hack it in SnG/tourney play where people are all aggro and trying to chip up in the early going. Patience is not rewarded (usually), and aggressive play is like throwing percentile dice. Not so much fun.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:05 (sixteen years ago) link

See, I love the SNGs where three idiots will go all-in within the first two hands. Then you can usually take your time after that.

Granted, the blinds can eat you up, but it's amazing how often you can fake out a table with a K 2.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i always think patience rewards you way more in SNG.. cos you don't necessarily have to be the one who knocks people out to win - survival is more the game than necessarily to build up an early chip lead (you can't cash out like you can in a cash game), it's when the blinds go up in the end-game that agressive play rewards you.

ken c, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I have no idea why I do so well when I play @ casinos, yet turn into a sack of mush when I play online tourneys. After a really bad losing streak, I was holding my own of late for a while playing $5 / $10 SNGs (tho I got submarined plenty of times), but had a bad run and then decided to play a $50 regular tourney because OF COURSE donks and tools play low buy-in tourneys, and got bounced within 30 minutes. (I only play 1 or 2 days a week, if that, so that doesn't help my stats, tho it sure helps my stress level.)

And I really need to stop mouthing / typing off when I get beat by someone because they're either a fish or a big stack that could afford to chase a sketchy hand.

Honestly, I'm gonna blame the retarded internet gambling ban thing -- I was doing just fine @ PokerRoom before they decided to lock out all US players. Now I'm FullTilt's and PokerStars' bitch. Because obviously the problem's not me. :\

David R., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:18 (sixteen years ago) link

x-post definitely. although turbo S+Gs are bitches because there just isn't time to be patient before the blinds eat you up. don't really suit really tight players I guess.

and Ken i'd be happy to play a midweek game but I guess doesn't work for Mericans who will be at work when we want to play.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:18 (sixteen years ago) link

oh that is true.

ken c, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 16:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a 20% ROI at the Stars $13 and $16 turbo SNGs - and patience definitely IS the way, even when the blinds go up quickly.

Today I cashed out from and uninstalled two of the Crypto skins - was pleasantly surprised to discover $3,800* sitting in them!

*a good proportion of this - say half - is from money deposited for bonuses, rather than winnings, though.

Mark C, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I still need to "wire" you back a deposit (while I still have it.)

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

burnt through $50 at 6 player $6 SNGs before finally placing. I'm not sure I have the patience for this (where "patience" is a face-saving synonym for "skill").

ledge, Friday, 11 April 2008 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Got back from the pub pretty loaded last night, accidentally joined a $10 Omaha Hi SNG when I meant to join a Texas Hold 'Em SNG. I have never played Omaha before. I've only gone and won the bloody thing, haven't I. I guess I was completely impossible to read because I didn't know any strategy at all and was drunk, so was pretty much guessing when I had a good hand.

caek, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:04 (sixteen years ago) link

the good thing is i don't think most people who play omaha has much of a clue what's going on so probably helps that you may well have been actually thinking about what you're doing, having not played it much before!!

ken c, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

i think it's time to spend some of those winnings at c3n7ury mark

ken c, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link

damn it. got in the money at the vic again - but busted out 6th despite chip leading at one point with 9 players to go. called someone half the stack all in with my KQ vs A3 and nothing hits. and about 10 all ins from other people all went the all-inners way (including one who hits the only one out card on the river)

my chips was dwindling but then i got AK suited on the big blind (i have about 4x left), one dude all in (similar stack) and another big stack calling, i went all in and dude all in was Q 6 and caller had 7 7.. of course the Q comes and nothing else so crashed out. shame.

maybe given the circumstances of being sixth (£75 verses 5th which would be like £150) i should have folded when the other guy called. but i just couldn't resist.

one month passes...

So I played poker for the first time (Hold 'Em) against a bunch of dudes, one of whom looked exactly like Tuomas and talked about politics and Rambo the entire time. I lost, but I lasted a while. I want to become killer at it.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Harrington on Hold 'Em, first 2 volumes, are very good in my opinion. Those focus on tournament play, but he has a new 2-vol. set on ring games that I'd like to get. (Buying poker books costs more than playing poker!)

Small Stakes Hold 'Em by Miller/Sklansky/Malmuth is also good, but its focus is limit hold'em, not No-Limit.

I've switched from .05/.10 NL to .25/.50 Limit, with better success. Apparently I just don't have the cast-iron cojones for NL. I'm okay with people who refuse to limp in, but if they're going to raise 10BB if they play at all, they're just freaking me out and they can play amongst themselves.

hi dere

do you guys still play?

i have had an awful few months of just total losing streak on the online poker places. strangely it all started after I went for a real life tourney again - i was up about $400 on fulltilt and then somehow ended up losing it all.

but i think i'm finding my rhythm again - made $100 back from the beginning (the final $6 left in party poker lol), i think my mistake before was while playing tourneys I got overly obsessed with deceiving people and controlling the table with my bets, and totally overlooked the fundamentals i.e. looking at the value of each bet etc. getting better now and got some discipline back. there are still moments when i'm still a bit like OMG i will call you just to see what you have, but i put those down as payments for learning as i still have lots to learn i think.

I play free poker sites with prizes. I won $10 in a game of 316 players.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Where do you get to play for free prizes?

I rode Mark C's $5 donation on FT for a year before I got drunk one night and blew it all. But in the meantime, I've gathered a lot of FTPs, so I still have some capital.

My live games are doing pretty good. I only won $14 the other night, but I have been taking home between $30 - $70 a night recently.

In the meantime, I found this batshit insane site. I'd be real tempted to call up one of those games in my state, but being here in the Bible Belt, you'd probably later see me on TV telling a reporter "I knew this was a trap..."

i play at turning stone sometimes when i'm at home (ie not at college)
here's a story from my last time playing cash there, a few months ago

blinds are $2-3 (kiddie tables, i know). the button's one seat to the left of me i believe. nothing much going around, but dude two seats to my right makes it $20. dude to my right calls. i look down at QQ. think for about two seconds and make it $60. folds around and they both call. flop comes T-8-3 or some shit, so i've got a huge boner. dude #1 open shoves the rest of his shit for like 95-100 bucks. guy to my left instafolds. i think for a minute, laugh out loud, say "you've got aces, it's obv, but i'm calling anyway". dude shows AA, catches an ace on the turn, and i laugh and go home. not my best hand.
not that much dough to drop i guess but i'm not a regular player up there by any means so it was kind of a downer

Kevin Keller, Monday, 17 November 2008 04:43 (fifteen years ago) link

that's harsh - it's so hard when those happens, you feel shit either way even if you fold them and they show you the AA.

seriously this dude will just call you all in preflop with everything. QQ vs KT, and hits a K

then TT vs A5, two 5s at flop.

that made me angry

i think i need to be more careful as to what hours during the day i play

o_O (ken c), Sunday, 23 November 2008 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

it seems at the moment, folks are proper loose (you re-raise them pre-flop with a massive hand they will call you with shit like A 5)
