the very idea that the de'lacy or amadour tracks are the best house tracks of the nineties is madness!

what because you think something that's ACTUALLY NOT THAT DIFFERENT SOUNDING FROM THEM AT ALL is so much better?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Now that my numbers one (Born Slippy) and two (Unfinished Symp, though it did well) are fucked, I'm holding on for For Tomorrow.

There are no britpop heavies! You are all alone at night.

Really? I guess we'll see.

Yeah, I went there with this single and I stand by it. It may not be their "most loved single" (I mean their most loved single is probably fucking "Song 2" -- this obv means nothing, "most loved" often means most easily hateable with Blur), but Modern Life Is Rubbish is their finest hour and "For Tomorrow" is MLIR in a song.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:55 (nineteen years ago) link

i liked your comment about Coolio re 'Lovefool' roxy

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

haha, thanks steve.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:00 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, all house music sounds the same. wtf

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

i will be out of here when the top 10 are posted :-(

see you tomorrow when i have to WADE THROUGH 1000 UNREAD POSTS - largely complaining about britpop/pulp/tokenism etc.

you know i love you

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I should have nominated Weird Al's Amish Paradise.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:05 (nineteen years ago) link

trickydisco i just figured you'd suggest a house track you think is soooo much better but in reality it probably wouldn't be that different. happens a lot. in any case saying someone's choice (however assertive it may be expressed) is 'madness' is just as annoying as calling it a typo.

i know i'm over-reacting but either back up such statements by suggesting something 'better' and explaining why you think, or just leave it.

surely ilm can do better than the 'yes it is, no it isn't' that tends to dominate some threads (a lot of dance ones, cos so many of us are trying to stamp our authority and knowledge down in an endless game of dick-waving oneupmanship)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:06 (nineteen years ago) link

The scene with the game of dick-waving oneupmanship in ILM: The Movie is a complete classic.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:08 (nineteen years ago) link

look out for the DVD of this thread with 40898242 hours worth of extra babble

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:12 (nineteen years ago) link

i was cracking a joke (trying to be colloquial actually), steve. i wasn't trying to one-up you at all. everyone here is entitled to their own opinion...

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:17 (nineteen years ago) link

ah i'm just bored of that 'your choice is madness!' thing - when it comes to the polls there's a lot of this assertiveness though - the whole 'oh i can't belieeeeeeve that's this low' or 'you like x more than y?!' etc. - it just feels very predictable and forthright, as if people expect the list to match their own idea of what a top 100 would be to the letter.

the inevitable (because i will start it if no-one else does) 'post your own top 100 of the 90s' thread is gonna be fun...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:22 (nineteen years ago) link

stevem you wanna tone down the OTMness this morning? I'm starting to wear down the keys.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:24 (nineteen years ago) link

You rate stevem higher than me? Madness.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:25 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't get the 'keys' thing!

damn these boots are starting to hurt...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

i think the disagreement is what makes these polls interesting. consensus is boring. fwiw, what about "brighter days" by dajae?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

My prediction (I realize I am making some BOLD CLAIMS here):

1. Common People - Pulp
2. Groove is in the Heart - Deee-Lite!
3. Regulate - Warren G
4. Cannonball - The Breeders
5. Hyperballad - Bjork
6. Regret - New Order
7. Soon - My Bloody Valentine
8. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
9. Mind Playing Tricks on Me - Geto Boys
10. Windowlicker - Aphex Twin

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

things are slow at the moment here at work, so I'll get started...

#10

BJORK - "Hyperballad" (619 points, 30 votes, 1 first place vote)

http://www.abc.se/~m8996/bjork/disco/realsize/576154-2.jpg

" "Hyper-ballad" is my favourite at the moment. Odd that I used to think her lyrics were moronic. Their haiku-like genius eluded me until this."

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay I gotta admit I didn't see Bjork coming.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

i sure as fuck didn't see her big bald head coming christ

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, at least it was in the top 10, if not as high as I predicted. (That was my dark horse.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

i think the disagreement is what makes these polls interesting

i didn't expect everyone to agree of course - but when they disagree i get irked and take it as a criticism that i don't know what i'm talking about, heh - carry on

xpost Hyperballad's bloody ace

RADIOHEAD - "Paranoid Android" (620 points, 31 votes, 3 first place votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000006TCH.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I don't like this one as much as some of their others, personally, but this is a fine tune. Search engine's slow here, any other comments?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Reviews of Bjork's new single 'Who is it?', from Scottish teenagers, in this week's Sunday Herald.

Tyree

It’s drastic. It’s all weird and spooky. It’s horrible. I don’t know how anyone could listen to it. That’s the first time I’ve heard anything by her.
Bin It!

Katrina

It’s crap. There is no tune and she doesn’t have a good voice enough for it. She can’t sing at all. I’ve never even heard of her.
Bin It!

Lisa

It’s too weird. I don’t like her voice. The beat is alright, it’s just Bjork herself and her music.
Bin It!

Ciara

Bjork scares me. She’s really, really weird. So is her music. It’s a bit too slow.
Bin It!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, this list is totally fucking shocking so far. The top ten is really a totally open game at this point. MiR's prediction looks pretty good to me, but I just can't accept "Chime" going top ten--is its reputation really that untouchable?

Anyway, "Loser" is most absolutely Beck's finest moment, and if one non-"Web in Front" song had to represent the golden age of american indie rock, "Loser" is probably the best to do it. The genius of that song hasn't aged a second in the last decade. I think I had it at #10 on my list.

haha, "Paranoid Android" at #9. Wow.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

"It’s drastic."? Wierd. I'm hoping for some pop domination of the rest of the top 10.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm. Mis-spelled 'Weird'. Anyway, Loser is a great song.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

After writing those predictions, I finally took a look at the thread where individual lists are being posted -- based on that "exit poll" data, I would retract my "Chime" prediction. It was not listed much at all.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

would've liked to have seen 'Where It's At' instead of 'Loser'

at least two spaces left i can't think what can occupy

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah SteveM and miccio, frankly I like complaining about the list, how am I supposed to react "oh that's interesting, people like st. etienne!!!!"? Its way more fun to be outraged.

I mean I'm not taking the list THAT seriously, its not about to make or break my day or something, but if i'm going to waste my time posting on a message board i'm going to damn well do what I enjoy doing (in this case, complaining).

And I DO appreciate the list bcuz it gives me something to talk about! And again, thanks to Gear! for compiling all this shit.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

(x-post) There are certainly better Beck songs, but I guess Loser was the biggest, so I don't mind it showing up here.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

The only two I'm certain about are still "Groove is in the Heart" and "Common People". And I think "Soon" is more or less definite as well. Besides that:

Cannonball (not so sure anymore)
Mind Playing Tricks on Me (was the campaigning not enough, perhaps?)
Regulate (Given trends on the list, I think chances are pretty good)
NMH (still can't underrate their clout with the indie crowd--remember "Letter From an Occupant"!)
DI (what song, though?)
Windowlicker
Chime (????)

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

i'll say (in any order): COMMON PEOPLE, EVERLONG, GROOVE IS IN THE HEART, REGULATE, SOON, REGRET, CHIME, CANNONBALL

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

#8

APHEX TWIN - "Windowlicker" (626 points, 39 votes, 3 first place votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000I8U7.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

"Windowlicker - Still as seductive and deadly as the day I first heard it, 3 years ago!"
-- K-reg

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

What about Betty Boo? (x-post)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

What would you guys argue with on my predicted top 10?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

and that cover is as disturbing as the first day I saw it.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

ha, i was just gonna post 'oop, replace Cannonball or Chime with Windowlicker'

Windowlicker excites, amuses and maybe even infuriates ('accident vs intention, how do we know?') - all hallmarks of a modern classic. little did we know a couple of years later all pop would sound like this.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I forgot about "Regret," that actually has really good chances as well. But "Everlong"? Yesterday I would've said no chance at all, but the way things have been going I guess it's possible. I still doubt it.

"Windowlicker" at #8 is pretty cool. It just missed making my top 30.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

"Everlong" has no chance, sadly.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm also abandoning hope for 'Doop'.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that Jay might be going 10 for 10, actually. His list is looking pretty good at the moment.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

weird then that Everlong got at least one #1 vote (and not everyone who voted has posted on the 'what did you vote for' thread)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 18:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Part of me has trouble believing "Regulate" and "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" made it this high, but if "No Diggity" can make it to #11 then I guess it's not too unlikely.
