I like it all.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 18:17 (eighteen years ago) link

This thread has gone long enough without the original Baxendale version, with lots of falsetto fun:

stirmonster (stirmonster), Sunday, 24 July 2005 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

It sounds so much like Rex the Dog!

At the risk of sounding ignorant for not knowing why, is this produced by the same guy? I couldn't find any information on discogs.

Mika, Monday, 25 July 2005 01:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I assume the original was produced by Baxendale themselves.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 25 July 2005 01:43 (eighteen years ago) link

how can anyone hate the vocals?! name me one thing more dramatic than an englisher on the edge of tears!

Barnaby (Barnaby), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:16 (eighteen years ago) link

It definitely makes for some uncomfortably listening

Jesus, geeta just played me a Koze 12" last night, can't remember which one, and it's enormous, stompy, spare. Slight metallic echoes, like a sphere of 1/4" steel being rhythmically flexed. God I love techno.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:33 (eighteen years ago) link

sounds like brutalga square. c'est delicieux.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 01:52 (eighteen years ago) link

this mayer baxendale remix is amazing, i don't understand whay you don't all love it!

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I love it toby. But the hate for it is poisonous b/c the idea of it being awful makes so much sense that I begin to doubt myself while listening to it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Barnaby (Barnaby), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:30 (eighteen years ago) link

it is amazing. it is one of the best "big" things this year.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 08:46 (eighteen years ago) link

if i only knew why i like happiness (mayer mix) but hate i built this city (mayer mix); they are so similar

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 09:26 (eighteen years ago) link

"Resist Tim! RESIST!!! "

On my walk between the tram stop and my house on the way home from work it sounded AWESOME. So much so that I played it again when going to get some ice cream and it was merely VERY GOOD. I fully expect it to be AWESOME next time though. It's one of those tunes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 11:31 (eighteen years ago) link

s'ok.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 11:59 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah i'm not crazy about it either. it's a little too nettwerk remix for my tastes.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:10 (eighteen years ago) link

He's sampling Aaliyah's "I Can Be" - that's the second German house Aaliyah homage!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:24 (eighteen years ago) link

aaliyah sample! this had better stll be up when i get back from work, if not can someone gmail please?

(also tim, what's the first german house aaliyah homage?)

lex logged out, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Ronan and stirmonster are absolutely OTM on the Baxendale remix in context as opposed to on its own - it worked perfectly when I heard it in a Mayer set three months ago (even though I was going 'wtf baxendale wtf?' all the way through), but I don't like it so much in the cold light of day. :( Still prefer it to the original though.

spontine (cis), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I am tentatively disappointed with that Superpitcher, it's a bit lacking in character for him isn't it? I mean sure he has set a high standard but I'm not sure if I'm feeling this one really, barring an epiphany in the next few hours. (I've listened about 3 times)

It sounds a bit like some of the people who've made Superpitcher style records, Richard Davis or Lawrence etc, or like what an English person would sound like trying to copy Superpitcher! Did Ewan Pearson or someone actually make this tune?

(haha just kidding that was mean)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I think M.R.I.'s "BLue" is the first german house aaliyah homage that Tim is refering to.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:55 (eighteen years ago) link

"(also tim, what's the first german house aaliyah homage?) "

MRI's "Blue", which is a quasi-cover of "Try Again".

On first listen (which is unreliable) "Tell Me About It" isn't as good as the "Je Regrette Everything" remix though, or "Heroin" (the other track it's a bit like). Still nice though, and it might well grow on me heaps. It loops that opening piano chord and ghostly "ohhh no" sigh from the intro of "I Can Be" and adds some lightly simmering acid sounds.

x-post x 2

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 12:59 (eighteen years ago) link

The Baxendale vocal: I've just worked out who it sounds like.

That chap from The Blue Aeroplanes! It's Dead Ringers like in it's verisimilitude.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 13:24 (eighteen years ago) link

if were comparing mayers "happiness" and the baxendale mayer remix, then i will take the baxendale vox over the superpitcher any day! those speak and speel parts make me skip the track to the fucked acid breakdown.

in fact, im not sure whether i like the original baxendale or the remix more. thanks for putting them both up!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:50 (eighteen years ago) link

b-b-but Ambrose? ARE YOU HAPPY? HAPPY PEOPLE! ARE YOU HIGH! DANCE BABY DANCE!

Although hearing the speak-and-spell bits always just reminds me of how great the Paul Rutherford track on Ivan Smagghe's Death Disco is.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:14 (eighteen years ago) link

LOVE this as well. it's tracky and rushy and full of texture.

btw i finally figured out what the synth swells right before the falsetto in the baxendale track remind me of -- "thriller"! this on the heels of the realization that jurgen paape's "cream" is a dead ringer for "material girl".

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:23 (eighteen years ago) link

It's all about the Neptunes-esque guitar ticks at the end as well.

coral/coral/coral, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:26 (eighteen years ago) link

"Cream" made me think more of the Jacksons' "Can You Feel It."

Köhncke's "Krieg" is my favorite of the new tracks, I think -- the Kaito one being a close second. Mikkel, Rex, Field: wrong sides picked.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't know about that andy, "i look into midair" is nothing to scoff at..

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

True. Neither is the Superpitcher track (no Luomo).

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:46 (eighteen years ago) link

you're such a tease mark! thanks, though.

the mayer "i built this city" is still genius.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

That Baxendale remix is gorgeous. Could easily fit in with some of the better Kompakt Pop releases (Voss, MFA, Dorau/Koehncke).

Has anyone seen the cover to Total 6 yet? Apologies for the design geekery, I just hope they didn't go with that hideous orange they're using on the fliers...

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 02:49 (eighteen years ago) link

seriously, on one listen I'm ready to declare this my favorite single-artist Kompakt album. and counter to Geeta, I think having "Brutalga Square" on it works wonderfully, particularly given its placement--it's a climax, and the rest of the disc works as a lead-up to it, then there's an afterword.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Re: Total album cover - it's going to be orange I think? That's the color of the promo CD.

Superpitcher played "Krieg" in NYC and it already works a dancefloor wonder when it abruptly switches to the perky and taught dance section 4 minutes in.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:02 (eighteen years ago) link

yep, orange

The Field, "Action"--holy shit, "Reach Out I'll Be There" riff! awesome stuff. between that and the 12-inch I'm very excited for whatever s/he/they do next.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:58 (eighteen years ago) link

i like that Superpitcher track quite a bit - it's refreshing. The vocal sigh is gorgeous.
