Why, do you have another date with phil or something?

We should totally go to a Jersey Red Lobster.

I used to eat there all the time when we lived in Ohio, but I always got the chicken, which I guess was kind of missing the point. I don't know, it was pretty good. People who ate there seemed to act like it was kind of "fancy" to frequent Red Lobster.

FACT:Mrs Nordic has worked in both Olive Garden AND Steak N Shake. She's something of a service industry veteran, but her charm hasn't suffered for it.

my mom told me that she and dad have started eating at the lobster ... and that they like it!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago) link

I don't mind Patrick Swayze, he's OK I guess. But you might need to explain that one as I'm a bit slow.

eleven months pass...
So I went to one with my parents in Oceanside over the weekend. It was *much* better than I remembered and had been expecting due to the posts on this thread. Maybe it was just this one? No more endless salad. Menu was well designed. Decent wine too.

I can't think of Red Lobster now without being reminded of the "Guess Hoes Coming To Dinner" episode of Boondocks anymore. DAMN GRANDDAD.

One of my students admitted to working in Red Lobster. When I frowned patronizingly, he got defensive. "Everything is fresh, bro! We throw everything out of the freezer after four days."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

One of my dumbass cousins was sexually harassed while working as a Red Lobster waitress. Low standards all around, it seems.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the last time I ate at Red Lobster was in 1998 in Kearny, Nebraska. For some reason it sounded good for lunch, and we swore we'd eat there if we saw a sign for one on the freeway. We did, and it was all we hoped for and more in the middle of a cross country move.

When I went to the bathroom, there were nautical charts of my small, rural Michigan hometown over the urinal and it freaked me out.

I can't imagine ever going to one again, being the anti-chain-restaurant snob that I am nowadays. Other than fast food in limited quantities, that is.

joygoat (joygoat), Thursday, 12 October 2006 02:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Does Beefsteak Charlies still exist? lol "You're Gonna Get Spoiled" I ate there a couple times in college, truly bad, but "all you can eat" so you had to do it.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that's common. three star restaurants have frozen food they lie about. the restaurant I work at now (although it's not nearly three stars) does. fact: restaurants LIE about that shit. NOBODY CHECKS.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Thursday, 12 October 2006 04:05 (seventeen years ago) link

you two.

i have never been to a Red Lobster, but, conceptually, they're one of the greatest things America has to offer. fucking seafood restaurants not just in, but all over the middle western states??? kudos, united states of america. kudos.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 12 October 2006 05:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I ended up eating in one of these in Orlando a couple of times (working just off the Chain Restautant Mecca of I-Drive), so greasy and so oily, everything slathered in it. Frozen fish restaurants, as gbx points out, crazy concept from a crazy country.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 12 October 2006 05:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I have never been to one but recent commercials touting orgies of shrimp are tempting me.

I can not even look at a Red Lobster without launching into
"Andrae, If we continue to fight in front of my colleagues at Red Lobster, we're gonna have to break up."

like murderinging (modestmickey), Thursday, 12 October 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

anyways, anecdotal evidence about frozen food in fancy restaurants: a friend of a friend of mine works in this real fancy seafood place in downtown Charlotte. his restaurant serves most of the celebrities that for whatever reason come through the city.

a couple months ago, they were serving some fish that the wait staff was instructed to explain is super rare and can only be caught one day the entire year in a several-hour window of time. the fish is shipped in absolutely fresh and served right then. super rare L@@K. well, they served that fish for about 2 weeks. only one shipment of it ever came in. you piece it together.

Oh man, every small-town family to thread who thinks that Red Lobster is a "fancy" restaurant. It, along with Olive Garden, were originally owned by some division of General Mills (Cheerios!) before they were spun off.

There are two types of people I've met from small midwestern towns: those that are skeptical of almost all seafood, and those that think Red Lobster is a fancy eating destination. Somehow I'm pretty sure the two are linked.

Of course, the younger generation is losing this what with their MTV and fancy college towns with crappy sushi places.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 13 October 2006 12:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I kind of like the Olive Garden. I just don't confuse it with Italilan food.
