Are there any acoustic covers of rap records that aren't awful?

ummm, signs are pointing to "no"

okay except the "Baby Got Back" cover is hysterical

i think whiney was making an under-considered criticism in the dynamite hack post & i think lists of bad songs are funny.
― i got nothin (deej), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:47 (fourteen years ago) link
whiney's cynicism & self-loathing makes him a tedious message boarder at times but it makes him a hilarious writer when he's trying to eviscerate something which is why this list has been really awesome so far imo
― brrrmuda triangle (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:56 (fourteen years ago) link
that's ridiculous, his poor fashion sense and goblin-like features are the source of his hilarity

not all acoustic or covers, obviously, but the above question reminded me that i need to watch that mtv thing with 2pac backed by members of Groove Colelctive. its actually pretty good...

"This last part isn’t Aaron (or America’s) fault, but cracked me up anyway. Four different lyric Web sites (incorrectly) list the second verse as: “Everybody come together, make it half-black, white, Spanish, Chinese…” I’m pretty sure that means that Carter’s idea for world harmony would be to have everyone ejaculate in a big bucket and make a new race of awesome hybrid people."
If I ever meet Whiney, I will high five him for this.

Never heard of Aaron Carter, I guess he one of those US-only stars?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link
"he was"
haha "one of those"
he was a "star" to 12 year old girls for a few years - not really notable aside from being the brother of a backstreet boy

I dunno, I'm more offended by "Oh Aaron" than this one (which is pretty bad, sure, but I think the Beastie Boys' "An Open Letter to NYC" is way worse on this theme -- lacks the WTF that makes "America AO" if nothing else completely insane).

I hadn't heard that Basshunter tune before, quite funny! Though Double You already did a much better Eurodance version of "Please Don't Go" back in 1992:

Aw, the V-Hudge song isn't THAT bad, though it is probably her worst song. Best song was a bonus track on her first album, "Don't Talk":

ditto, i suppose. although I'm not sure if it's really one of the 50 worst song of the decade. it's an inoffensively bland modern rock track. surely even 3 doors down have done worse. that awfully maudlin song from American Pie 2, for example?
― 7borad dudes get sb'd, frequently. (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 24 October 2009 17:36 (fourteen years ago) link
3 doors down have def done worse. what about that song that was playing in movie theaters for months trying to get you to join the army? at least 'kryptonite,' shitty as it is, kinda earned its spot on the charts

Beyond the boundaries of your city's lights,Stand the heroes waiting for your cries. So many times you did not bring this on yourself,When that moment finally comes,I'll be there to help.
On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,I'll be right here.Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,We'll always be ready because we will always be there.
When there are people crying in the streets,When they're starving for a meal to eat,When they simply need a place to make their beds,Right here underneath my wing,You can rest your head.
On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,I'll be right here!Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,We'll always be ready because we will always be there...
There... there... there...
Hope and pray that you'll never need me,But rest assured I will not let you down.I'll walk beside you but you may not see me,The strongest among you may not wear a crown.
On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,I'll be right here!On that day when you don't have the strength for the burden you bear,I'll be right here!Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.(Citizen soldiers)Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,We'll always be ready because we will always be there.

the whole thing reeks of challoping for ilx's (one's peers: i.e., pretentious 20-some-year-olds reparazent!) favor. big fucking surprise. still, if it wasn't all so consistently obvious it may have been somewhat funnier (tho i sincerely doubt it).
― the not-fun one (Ioannis), Sunday, 25 October 2009 10:57 (fourteen years ago) link
3 doors down have def done worse.
Perhaps, but if you were subjected to rock radio for upwards of 8 hours a day any time between 2000 and 2003, you heard this song enough times to make you wish for deafness. Its ubiquity alone qualifies it for the list over any other 3DD song.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 October 2009 11:53 (fourteen years ago) link
if you want to claim a song's ubiquity is exceptional, don't use the set up "if you were subjected to rock radio for upwards of 8 hours a day anytime between 2000 and 2003." Because, in that context, later years offer similarly ubiquitous - and worse - gold & platinum singles by three doors down.
