Anyone planning to do this? Hopefully this time I can start an album on the 1st and actually finish it on the 30th instead of nearly a year later...

shiiiiit, i think the only way i can finish this thing this year is by cheating and including music started before november

I dunno, unless you've got crippling writers block this seems like a piece of piss?

at least compared to writing a novel in a month

I'm sure I've written an album's worth of music in a month before

ps nobody said it had to be good music

I wrote an album's worth of inudge music just last week

It's writing, recording and mixing an album. No previous material is allowed. Everything has to be done in November, unlike NaNoWriMo which allows people to plan stuff in advance.

I'm getting a new PC on Friday specifically for recording purposes, so I think I'll take a shot at it.

(xpost) Also the 30th Nov deadline for WriMo is just for the first draft.

producing even a first draft of a novel seems way more challenging than this - maybe it's just my attitude about making music? some of my favorite albums were recorded and mixed in a day or two!

if you had the time you could write and record a song a day. do a triple album!

I sort of agree about the songwriting side, because that's always the bit I finish very quickly. One year I did RPM (Record Production Month), basically the same as AlMo but in February and with the goal of 14 tracks, and I had the songs written in about four days. Nevertheless I still over-ran by a week due to other commitments, even though my recording style at that time was very much "get in there, get it on tape, oh I flubbed that line a bit, never mind". AlMo is certainly an achieveable goal, one that's perhaps more about organisation than anything else. But when I tried WriMo I found it far more difficult, it felt like breaking rocks, this continually having to bash away at just one thing.

With the novel, when I got stuck I was stuck. There was nothing else about the novel that I could go and work on. But with albums, if I'm having a hard time with a lyric, then I can go away and work on a bassline for another track or something, until I'm better disposed to write some words again.

yeah, I've thought about doing WriMo, and it's a lot more daunting to contemplate cranking out 5 pages of prose on the daily than coming up with a mess of songs. I could whip up the equivalent of pink moon in a week! sounds like fun!

my high school band recorded and released a cover album of springsteen's tunnel of love a week after it came out. we completely ignored the music, just took the lyric sheet and started recording. it was a complete freakshow but we had a blast making it.

two weeks pass...

my punk band wrote an album worth of bubble-pop tunes in a weekend once. if we had recorded it all on the 4 track probably would've taken like four days in total.

I've got nine tracks ready to be mixed. How is everyone else doing?

a gift from your mind in the form of the perfect beat (snoball), Sunday, 8 November 2009 10:50 (fourteen years ago) link

can we include tracks we started before november? cos then i will be fine. if this is cheating then i think i will cheat and just use this as motivation to finish a draft of those songs (mostly needs vocals).

It doesn't say anything specific about not using material from before November in the FAQ, but it's heavily implied. However last year I used stuff from before and simply used NaSoAlMo as a way of setting a deadline for actually finishing the album.

exploiting loopholes is consistent with my texas upbringing, i will do it

Just over a week left. How is everybody doing? I think I've just about finished, aside from tweaking the mixes on a few tracks.

I'm running late, mainly due to gear problems but partly cuz im lazy. it's gonna be short and dumb but i like one of the songs.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 13:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I started off on 1st Nov with the intention of making a huge "wall of sound" album, but it's turned out quite differently.
Probably the best track ("Running All The Way")...
