And that's a bummer hurting - was it mixed live and recorded to a single stereo track then?

St3ve Go1db3rg, Monday, 23 July 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

yup

Hurting 2, Monday, 23 July 2007 12:32 (sixteen years ago) link

You can basically hear vocals and lead guitar really well (and lead guitar is mostly single-note lines that sound weird by themselves), the bass ok, the steel guitar a bit, the other guitar (which plays all the meaty chord parts) not at all, and in my drums you can barely hear the snare.

Hurting 2, Monday, 23 July 2007 12:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Here's a couple of my tracks, the most recent is more of a demo (the rest are mixed & mastered, newest being "Grunge regurgitation")

WPRB show can be streamed here:

Sounds better than I initially thought - not the greatest mix but I think the vocals come through really nicely.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 29 July 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

That is kind of a weird snareless mix, but I don't think it sounds too bad. I just listened to the tune on your myspace, by the way, and I like it a lot.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Sunday, 29 July 2007 21:13 (sixteen years ago) link

This is such a great thread. I get to hear so much great music from you music-making types! As a special shout out though: Andi Mags, you are a genius.

I know, right?, Sunday, 29 July 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost - They had the overhead mic pointed straight backwards to the wall because the mic stand was broken -- that may explain the lack of snare. ps thanks

I've just stuck up 4 demos on MySpace. They're not really finished and some of them are silly sketches, but I like them. Do you? http://www.myspace.com/mightysandyheathtransmitters

Oh and we're live on the radio tomorrow at about 1 p.m. CDT if anyone wants to listen. The station streams live, so you can listen on your computer. The info is in the newest blog posting on the above myspace page.

song is 'baby when i found it', 10 extra bonus points to whomever can guess the sample

m bison, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 05:14 (sixteen years ago) link

No clue what the sample is, but it's a cool track. I especially like the spacy stuff at the end.

n/a, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 12:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Sounds good m bison! reckon it needs a vocal (preferably vocodered or really prince-ish) and it could be a hit.

We played our three newest songs live on the radio a couple of weeks ago, they are now up on our myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/thefakefictionsband. I'm especially happy with "Radical Movement."

n/a, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 12:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I got drunkish once and made this 10-minute noise barrage in FL Studio (which I chopped in half, putting one half in each channel) but I'm too embarrassed to post it.

IMM HAS NO SHAME

John Justen, Thursday, 6 September 2007 07:04 (sixteen years ago) link

There's no judgment here. This is a safe place.

m bison, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh my god, it's giving me a headache listening to it and it's EXTREMELY loud/distorted and is simply the byproduct of 3 shots of rum with blue-raspberry lemonade kool-aid. Extremely fun to make, but a chore to actually listen to. and the channels are not sync'd properly.

Stevie D, Saturday, 8 September 2007 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

to be honest I think I was trying to completely rip off of Yo La Tengo's "Spec Bebop"

Found a new home for rap beat depository:

http://www.myspace.com/chubsmckenzie

One of the songs uses cowbells pitched down to sound like steel drums (probably the only drum sounds I've actually recorded myself).

m bison, Saturday, 8 September 2007 07:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey, I made a new track - "These Once Were Men". I'm gonna add maybe some better drums and a few more lead vocals, but I'm pleased with how it is so far.

My band is going in the studio in two weeks! Been waiting for this for, like, five years.

Which band?

Is the 0ptimistic still a going concern?

n/a, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Digd0wn.

0ptimistic has not been very active at all but is still technically a thing. They played a show a few weeks ago but I had a gig with another band and couldn't do it.

The drums (cough) "need work". Like, a lot of work.

Pashmina, Monday, 24 September 2007 09:19 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

The other night I got a bunch of people round and had a drunken jam - people hitting pots and pans, me on guitar, flatmate on bass and a particularly good drummer friend of ours. Made a track totally on the spot, drunk out of our minds. Great fun really. It's up now as "Belligernet Cnt Jam 1" at The Mighty Sandy Heath Transmitters site. Have a listen, it's drunk and a good laugh.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the distortion.

Jordan, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:31 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, cheers. Seriously?!

Yeah I'm serious. I can't hear what the singer is singing though, apart from one word which happens to be "motherf***er"! The distortion is at just the right level.

snoball, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

That was me singing. I was more or less yelping syllables over whatever it was we were making up. It was all recorded on the internal mic of an MP3 player, but it was pretty much as distorted as it sounds on the recording.

the next grozart, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

The bit with the "all right you motherfuckers" is an "introducing the band" bit, except I asn't actually saying anything other than "we've got duh on duh, duh over there on muuuh and me on mUUAAHH!"

I have also done a Tiny Tim-esque solo cover of I Remember You by Frank Ifield. Forgot to take out the click track or even master it properly, but I think it adds to the jokesness http://www.myspace.com/mightysandyheathtransmitters

the next grozart, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Audacity click track! One day someone's going to make a song where that's the only percussion, although it'll probably just sound like "Da Da Da".

snoball, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, what MP3 player are you using? Just wondering as when I try doing field recordings on mine it sounds like garbage.

snoball, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Creative Zen Vision M. I've only been using it for the Belligerent Aunt jams though. The Mighties is all recorded on computer using Audacity or Acid Pro and a Shure SM-58 for the vocals. I tend to record guitar straight into the soundcard as when I use an amp it gives off a ridiculous amount of hiss and buzz.

just finished a new song! it's really simple but i like it, you can listen here if you want: http://www.myspace.com/clonefeed. the song's called "Jellyfish"
