lama rabi rabi and hypnotic underworld are the two strongest albums. and they are the most amonduul2-ish albums as well.

What Amon Duul 2 era?

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Wolf City?

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Snuffbox, Lama Rabirabi, and Hypnotic Underworld the best, in that order. Second Time Around and the s/t both have some good jams, too. None of the live stuff has thrilled me completely (Temple Stone or the DVD) but they were a highlight of Terrastock 5, although that doesn't really translate on the DVD. My favorite parts of the set were left out, like the incredible "Forthcoming from the Inside."

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

My favourite era! Well, one of! (xpost)

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

post-yeti? yeah, okay, wolf city-era.

none of the stuff on the dvd compares to the show i saw in philly after snuffbox came out. they were FULL ON ROCK that nite, and completely on fire. one of the greatest shows i've ever seen.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

The Terrastock 4 show -- indescribable. They had only about ten minutes and they made the most of it beyond description.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

sadly, the only ghost album i would destroy would be the damon & naomi one. and i like damon & naomi fine. okay, maybe that was more of a damon and naomi album. soooo boring. (i keep forgetting how old this thread is. i'm probably repeating myself a hundred times.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:49 (eighteen years ago) link

they were fucking fantastic in NYC last year or the year before, whenever that was.

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:07 (eighteen years ago) link

the reason to buy hypnotic underworld, if anyone needs one, is right here in this snippet from my review:

"Anyway, if Ghost's new Hypnotic Underworld is an ever expanding lotus blossom that grafts past prog desires and the will to propagate on its petals whilst consciously demanding collective pre-history antidotes and anecdotes in exchange for post-war/post-'68 letdowns and lessons learned that have forever addled the brains of impressionable seekers, then so be it. I'm in. History is written by the victors, but the beauty of desolation and dreams of rural idylls far from the bomb blasts are written by those who died for farce."

dud

Classic!

I really liked the dark temple footage in the DVD... and the accompanying CD is their most out-there improv stuff.

This "last US show" thing makes me very sad, I was lucky enough to see them on their 1998 tour and they played this long crazy noisy thing with hurdygurdy that sounded like something off of Batoh's second solo EP...

Drag City's news section says this: Neil Hamburger, High Llamas, Ghost and King Kong (plus...shhh! Joanna Newsom. There — we said it) are all busily toiling away, soon to surface with records we’ll pitch to you in the future. Will it be 2006 or 2007? Who knows! The path to post-production is a long and tangled one and although we are the gambling sort, we’ve long since given up trying to guess when the art’s ready to come out of the oven.

Wait, what? Just seen that they cover 'Caledonia' - where can I get this? Must hear it.

on their last album

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 4 April 2009 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay, fine, I'll take that as a hint to go google what their last album was. You could have given a name or something. Gah.

emil.y, Saturday, 4 April 2009 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyone else excited for the tour???

ilxor, Saturday, 4 April 2009 17:45 (fifteen years ago) link

they are so awesome live. saw them in providence at terrastock 6 and theirs was the only show i caught besides lightning bolt, bardo pond, and jack rose that lit the place that bright

kamerad, Saturday, 4 April 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

batoh swore on stage they'd never return until bush was no longer our president. well fuck yeah, here we go

Very. Nice follow-on news from seeing Acid Mothers Temple/Kinski last night.

denver show is going to be tiiiiiight. though i will probably be the only one there.

tylerw, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago) link

is there a new album coming out? or are they just touring for the heck of it.

tylerw, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Nothing immediately listed on their website about a new album, so looks like the latter option:

http://www.ab.cyberhome.ne.jp/~pochamal/

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Just got the first (self-titled) album on PSF secondhand the other day and am listening to it right now, coincidently enough. Sounds good.

krakow, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

OK, second time round for this self-titled album and it rules. Much better than I was expecting (I love 'Hypnotic Underworld' but was afraid that much of their other stuff would be too hippyish for my tastes).

krakow, Saturday, 4 April 2009 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Nope, it's all pretty great!

ilxor, Sunday, 5 April 2009 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Aye, I reckon I'll be tracking down the rest now...

I know Monorail has had a s/h copy of Batoh's Darg City solo compilation for a while, so if that's still there on Monday, it's mine.

krakow, Sunday, 5 April 2009 08:09 (fifteen years ago) link

best accomplishment of the obama administration so far!!! : )

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Sunday, 5 April 2009 09:19 (fifteen years ago) link

After repeatedly reading lots of praise for these guys (and given the fact that, on paper, they're right up my alley) I succumbed and bought In Stormy Nights on vinyl last year. But it failed to move me. Maybe I should give it another chance, but I'm barely motivated right now to walk across the room and put it on.

Is this album generally considered to be poor? Should I perhaps give them another go, with a different LP?

Duke, Sunday, 5 April 2009 10:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Right, In Stormy Nights is on the deck. "Hemicyclic Anthelion" covers all of side one, which is always a good sign....

Duke, Sunday, 5 April 2009 10:26 (fifteen years ago) link

that's the most difficult place to start I could imagine! good luck. I found the later part of the record to be stronger.

sleeve, Sunday, 5 April 2009 10:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, "Hemicyclic Anthelion" is one of the songs I always liked on this album. I love that sort of free-form piece. It was some of the later, folkier songs that I found a little off-putting. But listening now, I'm actually quite liking them too, for example "Motherly Bluster" (on side 3 of the LP)

Duke, Sunday, 5 April 2009 11:05 (fifteen years ago) link

best accomplishment of the obama administration so far!!! : )

Sadly, yes.
