this is tempting, though I know I'll get addicted. Hmm, might check in later to see what the bobby is.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 13:40 (nineteen years ago) link

you can set a responisble gaming limit to stop yourself being addicted!! (like setting an arbitary deposit limit per month/week so that you can't blow out all your money - of course it won't stop you being GOOD and addicted and so keep playing without having to deposit money, but then that'd be alright i suppose!)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 13:42 (nineteen years ago) link

that sounds sensible enough, do I have to wear a tie?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

you can choose to be the cartoon character with a tie - i prefer to be the old lady with a square hat though.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Holy fucking shit I'm appalling at this. I just tried playing pretend poker (at least I hope it was) for half an hour - lost every hand, including one where I folded on a hand that would have totally won, and realised I don't understand the betting. If anyone wants to explain what call, check, bet and raise mean, simply and accurately, I'd be totally, pathetically grateful.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

i will play later this afternoon around noon. 11pm in london is 5 in the us? i can play then.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:31 (nineteen years ago) link

This might be wrong. If it is, please tell me, because I'd appreciate knowing (I said, I'm not very good)

Bet: what each person has staked so far
Call: bet as much as you need to to stay in the hand, which is the amount that the players on your right have bet.
Check: don't bet anything at all, but don't fold (which you can do if you are the first player in the betting round to bet, or if all the players to your right have also checked)
Raise: bet *more* than you'd have to to call (meaning that players who have already bet will have to call again to meet your bet)

Thanks Chris and Caitlin - I'm getting an idea now.

Chris, 11pm is 6pm on the Eastern seaboard.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:00 (nineteen years ago) link

anyone up for a game

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 16:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd love to but officially I'm still working (for the next 20 minutes, anyway). Hope to see you at 2300 GMT.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Bump! Anyone else up for this? pokerroom.com

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe, later tonight - I'll have a look at the site, see if I can register (do they take debit cards?) and see how sleepy I am.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:34 (nineteen years ago) link

they take debit cards. and i am definately up for a game. it might be hard to get everyone in one room for a tourney. but we could set up a private table for just a cash game?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

That sounds good, assuming the stakes are still pretty low (I don't want you to clean me out *completely*). 2300GMT is good for me too, because I'll be able to get on the other computer (the Windows one) by then.

Um, will it work over a dialup connection?

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I've registered ok (my nick is 'gneiss') but the Java version doesn't work very well on my rather old Linux computer - it starts up OK, but if I try to join a table it just seems to freeze up. I'll try switching over to the newer Windows computer and putting a deposit in my account later on.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I've signed up too. "FuzzySte" is my nickname.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Grrr, I can't find my driving license for the sign-up form. Does anyone fancy just a play-money game so I can see if I can get the thing working at all?

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:02 (nineteen years ago) link

so are we okay with dial up connections, I'm feared my 1k per second rate is going to piss people off!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:38 (nineteen years ago) link

i've created a private table. letdown08's nl in the private table area.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:45 (nineteen years ago) link

ok! i'm logging in

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Why can i not find your table on the private tables list?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:25 (nineteen years ago) link

it's deffo there.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:29 (nineteen years ago) link

"letdown08's"

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Dom, make sure your format (at the top) is ring games and then click the private tables tab. Ste, come back - we've stopped playing for now as we need a few more dudes! Caitlin, where are you?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Cheers for that chaps! Shall we do another one soon? This time with more than three people (and Ste, briefly!).

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 00:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry for being a no-show last night - I was falling asleep at my desk by 10.45, and thought that poker probably wouldn't be a good idea at that point.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 09:41 (nineteen years ago) link

haha yes sorry for choking last night. i got a bit confused with what was going on on my screen and it was all going too fast. I wasn't expecting the high bids either. i think i lost $3.50 in less than 30 seconds.

I shall spend a bit of time in the 'pretend' money games area before the next session.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:21 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, I'm in for round two whenever it occurs. Does one of the ILE Poker elders wish to set a date?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Ste, the bidding got scarier once Chris and Ken got into their stride - I think the biggest winning pots were $27 and $29 (the last one me thwacking Ken with an aces high straight, hehe). But by and large, the average (played) hand went for $4-6, which isn't a lot of $$$ when divided by 3 players.

I can do tonight?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:41 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i'll totally play - haha last night I kept not paying attention and got timed out twice when i had the top hand! pants!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i shall be up for possibly another round this evening. mark, think your ready for a tourney? I think so....hustler.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:45 (nineteen years ago) link

if you guys get a chance look at the private tables in the $100-$200nl rooms and look at the money these people have. I saw one person with approx $136000.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

also, mark called my stone cold bluff of $12 and took me down.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:47 (nineteen years ago) link

it could all be yours in about 10 hands!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 10:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha Chris! I definitely learnt from both you and Ken and I'm beginning to get a handle on how to play the game properly, but you can hardly call me a hustler as you turned your $10 into $40 or so, whil I lost 5 bucks.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 14:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Chris, I wonder if I need more practice before doing a tournament. When I pretend play in rooms of 10 people, I just lose it completely :(

(who else is up for playing tonight??)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Typically in 10 player games you need to play really tight. my strategy is to not play anything but face cards(suited or unsuited) or decent pairs ...9's and up until it widdles down to less people. also the play is much different in the real money tournaments rather than the play games. people tend to shy off big bets unless they are holding something in the tourneys where as the play money games people bet with anything and everything and usually take you down.

but as i've mentioned before playing tight in the tourneys can get frustrating when you get beat by small pairs or some one takes you out playing a 7-4.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, the play games aren't a realistic edumacation as far as I can tell as you know that at any one time there are 2 or 3 players just going "wheeeee!" and betting on everything. Last night was much more interesting - looking forward to doing it again. 5 or 6 players would be ace (Dom, Ste, Caitlin, I'm looking at you).

CHICAGO NICK, YOU SEEM THE IDEAL POKER PLAYER - WHY DON'T YOU JOIN US?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm much better at the tournament games than real money

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll stick to the private ilx tables for now.

I can't do tonight though, tomorrow or the weekend would be ideal if anyone is around at the same time as last night?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Ste, I may well be - I can see myself getting into this!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Just so y'all know - I am TOTALLY ON BOARD w/ taking your money (or giving my money away), but a) I can't really do it during the week (w/out shunting some other responsibilities), and b) I'm on a wireless network that's just a bit unreliable, and I phear what will happen if I'm in the middle of a hand and get punted.
