I am considering getting a pair of birks for summer, this style -
http://www.birkenstockusa.com/shared/productimages/large/043661.JPG

they also come in all black, but the all black is twice as expensive ($150)

daria-g, Thursday, 24 May 2007 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link

also thinking of buying a pair of neon yellow-green adidas, since my favorite grey pumas are about wrecked

daria-g, Thursday, 24 May 2007 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

D., I have the above in olive. They are super comfortable, and not too embarassingly Birk-y.

These just arrived in the mail:

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 24 May 2007 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

exactly, i figure i need some sandals for walking around the city and it's very hard to find anything that's walkable, not hideous, and won't fall apart. fashiony people have def. been wearing those kind of birks

daria-g, Thursday, 24 May 2007 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yes
there is also a company called naot that has some nice styles, if you can find them - they also have a lot of hideous styles - i have naots from about 3 yrs ago that are light green with pink flowers embroidered in the leather straps - pretty - they are still holding up

kenan, Thursday, 24 May 2007 22:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I am going to get some Teva-styles sandals ala deej and sacrifice all of my self-respect because it's too hot for shoes and ALL other sandals either kill the tendons in my flat feet or fall right off because I walk like a shlub.

Abbott, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't wear the flats they make for girls bcz the soles are too thin and ZERO arch supprt, and walking on gravel or anything but linoleum/carpet in the is torture.

Abbott, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

kenan, don't write off the birkenstock-like sandal for guys - there are dif styles, like with backstrap etc - and you won't nec look like a hippie, and they are good for your feet. they are pretty much the only sandals i like on guys really.

both my flats are clarks, i realized! and they have decent support (i have really high arches too)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Being an aussie (m8) i pretty much only wear thongs (or flip flops what do you guys call them?) during summer.
They fuck my feet up pretty badly. I may invest in some birkenstocks. I don't like the style of ones daria-g posted upthread though.

Drooone, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link

they are pretty much the only sandals i like on guys really.

Oh, well as long as YOU like them...

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:12 (sixteen years ago) link

the thing i like most about the kind-of shoe (the pic i posted are Sketchers, the only good thing they're doing anymore) is that they're sandal-ish, but still have a real sole and a real toe. So still a good gum shoe, not too pricey, breathes v well, etc.

kenan, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:20 (sixteen years ago) link

whoa... GYM shoe not gumshoe

kenan, Friday, 25 May 2007 00:21 (sixteen years ago) link

anyone got a pair of eccos? they are light, comfortable and last ages.

http://www.ecco.com/file/21946/20070820094346/shoe_detail_3563400101.jpg

worn these every day to work for the last year, and they're only just beginning to get a bit shabby.

max r, Monday, 8 October 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

when i was a kid eccos were for nerds and swots and spazzes. but i suspect they're ok now.

CharlieNo4, Monday, 8 October 2007 12:53 (sixteen years ago) link

really? they were kind of cool at my school...

I just got a pair of these, except they have dark soles and dark details. I also replaced the dud tan laces with brown ones. They're comfy as fuck. I think I like the way they look, but my perception is a bit clouded by sticker shock.

Hurting 2, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

they look like campers.

stevienixed, Monday, 15 October 2007 02:02 (sixteen years ago) link

they are campers

Hurting 2, Monday, 15 October 2007 02:16 (sixteen years ago) link

ty ;)

Hurting 2, Monday, 15 October 2007 02:21 (sixteen years ago) link

The soft leather really is kind of amazing, and the soles are great, and they're obviously well made. I've just never spent so much on a pair of shoes. But I tend to only own one pair of casual shoes and wear them all the time, and I've been trying to make that adult leap to spending more money for things that are genuinely better quality and will last longer (and be a better value in the long run).

Hurting 2, Monday, 15 October 2007 02:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Campers are definitely worth the price (and I'm super-cheap). I bought a pair of red pelotas five years ago and I still wear them. (Granted, they've got a few holes in the heels, but the soles are so thick, it doesn't even matter.) Take care of them, give them a polish every once in a while and they'll look and feel great for years. Best shoes I've ever owned.

lindseykai, Monday, 15 October 2007 02:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Wots with men's shoes not coming in widths anymore, btw?

Hurting 2, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

The only person I know who wears eccos is my 89-year-old granmother. There was some discussion of their comfort and style on the High Heels thread so I had a closer look in a department store but ... meh, they still look a bit comfort over style to me. And I'm not old enough to care about that yet.

I really really really love these boots. So comfortable, so attractive.

http://www.kennethcole.com/img/prod/KC_KM28084LE_BLK.jpg

kenan, Monday, 14 January 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link

they look completely dud on their own, but i realize that most men would wear trousers over'em and that will massively improve these boots. :-)

i never ended up getting this cutesy miu mius i ogled some time ago. they didn't even have'em on sale in my size. i ended up buying some boots which are very narrow (for my cow feet). more sensible (financially speaking). also, i didn't want to get something "posh" when i'm still a fat blimp. :-(

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:39 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe they are too dark

use brighter laces?

StanM, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Totally. Throw some laces that match the light gray and not the dark gray, and you've got a much brighter pair of shoes.

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:51 (sixteen years ago) link

haha i was thinking more like 'they aren't fuschia' but point taken

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Rrrobs I was thinking the same: kelly green laces on those brown(?) sneaks.

Laurel, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i just don't know if i'm that kinda girl tho, with the bright laces - i'd rather have the whole shoe be bright or not be bright
anyway, the big thing is that i need a comfortable pair of shoes for walking around in early spring b/c all my shoes of that kind are old/broken

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

and that aren't runners or hiking boots (though i do kinda need hiking boots/shoes too)

so unmotivated at work today! sunshine is leeeching motivation! if i were a cat i wld be doing that crazy thing cats do where they run from one end of the apartment to the other and then jump in the bathtub and meow really loudly
