i used to get paid on commission, and it was really bad for my poor impulse control.

lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

still, at least with things like those shoes or my huge orla kiely bag i have something to show for the money. the drinks, etc... not so much.

lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:35 (fifteen years ago) link

well, it could be worse, you could have been a college student with a credit card and poor impulse control like me from 1998-2002!

bell_labs, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:38 (fifteen years ago) link

hahaha! oh, i was that too!

lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

some of us learn late in life, if at all.

lauren, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

q, those are great!!

shoes.. opening ceremony grey oxford flats abt $200 figuring in shipping.. i think before sale were $320 or so? but they fit really well and i'll wear them for a long time. i don't think i have any that cost more than that, though probably some would have if i hadn't bought them in europe early 2000 when the dollar was v strong, like i think my fave kenzo heels were over $400 but i got them for maybe around $125 during july sales.. and these basic black delman oxford flats i wear pretty much every other day, i know were abt $325 new but again, thx bluefly major sale.

daria-g, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link

also i have terrible impulse control and apparently hate having money :)

daria-g, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I actually have a bit of the opposite problem (at least with clothes/shoes)--I have too much impulse control, meaning I'll see something I really really really like but then equivocate for forever until it is too late. Thus I end up with very little in my closet, and getting dressed becomes an exercise in frustration as opposed to a pleasure.

Another downside is when suddenly some sort of event pops up and I end up spending money on something I don't much like in desperation.

Note that I do not seem to have any trouble frittering away money on drinks, travel, and pricey groceries.

quincie, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i do that too... i have been putting off shoe-buying for so long that i'm now really screwed. and now i'm about to need an entire new work wardrobe + shoes. not good.

rrrobyn i lovvvvve those clarks. i may have to investigate finding them here...

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

and yeah there are at least 3 dresses in my closet right now that were purchased last min for events that i have only worn once. if i put the money for all those 3 together i could have bought some really awesome piece i bet.

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i have better with clothes & shoes consumption impulse control, and replaced it with a lack of food consumption impulse control </kathy>

bell_labs, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I am about to make a careful surrender to impulse and stimulate the economy by buying shoes from the same line as Ed:

nabisco, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 23:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I would say though, having worn my cydwoqs all day for a couple of days that they are some of the most awesomely comfortable smart shoes I've ever had and one of the few I haven't had to put insoles in.

Ed, Monday, 18 August 2008 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought a pair of these Keds about a month back and was like omg what have I done. now I like them. I swapped out the white shoelaces for dark brown dress laces and they look 10x better.

i have been eyeing them for awhile and just found them $100 cheaper than another seller, with free shipping, plus i had a 10% off coupon

Laurel, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:32 (fifteen years ago) link

those are great! i was looking at them myself but only pair in my size was a weird orange-caramel shade.. i liked the color but wouldn't match anything i own :)

daria-g, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Those are very cute!

Alright ladies, I've spent the whole summer wearing the most ridiculous cheap flipflops (the kind with the fake lace/sequin "closed" toe) because I am sick of blisters and I'm tall enough as it is. Anyway it's getting colder and I realize I have to buy a pair of boots and I am thinking I might have to order online since I have size 11 (ladies') feet.

My question: most comfortable brand of boots you have ever bought?
I am thisclose to just getting some docs. I like my boots black, with some sort of slight heel, and with grip on the bottom because the ice/snow is murder in the winter! I bought a pair last year with almost no grip and spent the whole winter walking....really....really...slowly.. and they were shit material that disintegrated a lot thanks to Toronto's excessive use of salt.

Help? :(

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a pair that look exactly like those I got from Target for $12. I don't understand people who spend $$$$ on shoes that look like they cost $.

musically, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:58 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm a fan of timberland boots - bought a pair a couple years ago and they're still going strong, might buy a new pair this year. bought a pair of mephisto boots last year, which are really nice looking, but the zipper got stuck/broken halfway up one of the boots by mid-march - it sucked! b/c there was still snow, obv. and i just didn't take them in for repair (i bought them over christmas while on the west coast, so coudln't go back to the store.) but i at least had my old boots to fall back on. they don't have the grippiest bottom but it's made of rubber so it's pretty decent. every winter i saw i'm going to buy those city cleats that you stretch over the bottom of yr boot but then i never do. i mean, b/c they're kinda dorky. maybe this year i will get over their dorkiness. but probably not.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i can always tell if yr shoes are from target
xpost

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:04 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmm, you know what? I am pretty sure last year I was all "eff this nonsense, I am getting Timberlands" which are really not super pretty (I'm an office worker) but damnit, I can change my shoes when I get into work! I will have to investigate that store. Rubber is better for gripping ice than the hard plastic of my last boots! :P thanks!

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:06 (fifteen years ago) link

which, i mean, who cares
my feet just never do well in or even fit cheap shoes. it's like a magnetic non-attraction thing. physics.
xpost

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost musically, the target shoes are fun for a quick splurge but they destroy my feet (blisters, cramps) because they are not as well built as the more expensive (and durable) ones... I envy you for being able to wear them!

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i hate myself for how picky i am about shoe quality/craftsmanship but i destroy a pair of $12 shoes in like 3 weeks.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i have pretty much destroyed a pair of $60 shoes this summer! and i didn't even wear them that much! (they were the pretty teal ones i got a couple of months ago. and which never really accommodated my toes. and which i said i wld stop wearing. and which i am wearing today.)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

aside from looking a lot better, higher-quality materials last longer. the cute blue-violet "leather" flats i bought on a whim for $20 last month are already ruined, and it only took about half a dozen wearings.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link

re: timberlands - yeah most are pretty ugly - like these ones have a great shape and good sole but why all the patchwork crap? maddening.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

oh finefine these come in pink! http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/18375997/c/716.html

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i realize that these are pretty ugly but specs are good warm & comfortable - total xpost to 'gear' thread :/ but damn slipping around in the ice & snow for 6 months gets really old really fast

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i have to not talk about boots now

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

OMFG those pink Timberlands (I always want to type Timbaland, without fail) are AWESOME!! I wonder if I could get away with that..

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry for bringing up boot jonesing rrrobyn

Finefinemusic, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

haha i just don't want to be thinking abt winter just yet!
i knew you'd dig those :)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:31 (fifteen years ago) link

and which i said i wld stop wearing. and which i am wearing today.

That makes Laurel laugh. So does this:

A Kenneth Cole sandal is the Ike Turner of footwear. Okay, it sounds like one of my ill-advised flights of bad-metaphorical non-fancy, but check it out. The sandal comes on real strong, right? Makes your feet look gooooood, showers them with sweet looooove, gets all cute and mad when you flirt with a 9 West model, and girl! You can't believe you got so luuuuucky — at first. But when you've fallen for his line, looked the other way when he bled dye and gave you corns, you've bought a few pairs, boom — he'll start in calling your feet too wide and get on you about letting your arches go, and then when you make noises about maybe switching to Steve Madden he beats your feet bloody, and just when you've made up your mind to leave, the sandal comes around all "baby, I'm so sorry, I lost my head, you know how I get when you go across the street to look in the window at Fluevog, please forgive me, I brought you the new line for spring, and look at the straps, baby, look at the straps, I'm so sorry, baby, I love you" and your feet will sit in a tub of Epsom salts all sullen like "go to hell, no sandal treats me that way, love ain't supposed to hurt, I don't love you no more" and the sandal's all "I can't live without you, baby, don't leave me that way," and those straps would really make your ankles look like Rita Hayworth's, but your feet stay strong, "nuh uh, if you loved me you wouldn't tear me up so bad," and the sandal slinks to the door and says all pitifully, "All right, baby, I'll go…if that's what you really want," and your feet look down, and they start to cry, and they give in all "promise you'll never do it again," and the sandal promises, and he gives your feet tender leather lovin', and the straps make your ankles look great…and then one night the sandal turns on your little toe in a drunken rage and your foot's locking itself in the bathroom screaming "NO! NO!" and girlfriend, you know he ain't no good for you so RUN.

Laurel, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link
