Rex The Dog? Rex the HOGWASH more like.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

the backlash began for me when kompakt signed him.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Am I willing to admit defeat yet? Not quite. Was I wrong? Probably.

(Don't mind me. I'm working on my Robert Evans [for Halloween].)

So, how good is that Triola record?

Very good.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 30 September 2004 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

my source narrowed it down to an early 90's brit.

bbeettaa, Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes "Frequencies" is thoroughly massive. The most *rave* thing he's done so far. That and (ironically given the "new "Rocker" tag) the Alter Ego mix of 2Raumwohnung are both rocking my world right now. Dance music is so LARGE at the moment!

I've noticed that the Hearts remix works exceptionally well as a cd opener.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

i just don't get the rex the dog stuff at all. to me it sounds like bad old hooj toons / felix stuff which off course in light of it being jx now makes perfect sense.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, now you're saying. Just a few days ago I was convinced it was Moby, at least I can admit defeat. Rex stuff sounds more like italo to me anyway. Weren't those JX hits a little in the vein of italo house of the time, mmm?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 30 September 2004 22:40 (nineteen years ago) link

well, i'm not much of an italo fan either.

stirmonster, Thursday, 30 September 2004 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

i like i high, by hyper go go.

who is that?

the great doxology of heckmondwike town (gareth), Thursday, 30 September 2004 23:50 (nineteen years ago) link

JX is one of my teen-era heroes, but what if it's Amos?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Rex the Dog remix of "There's Nothing I Won't Do" stat!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually that would be really marvelous. And it could repeat that trick that Freeform Five use in their remix of Mylo's "Muscle Cars" - brief snippets of early house/hardcore classix! Actually what *is* that sample in the "Muscle Cars" remix? My mind is blanking.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:53 (nineteen years ago) link

The Rex the Dog dub of Depeche Mode's "Photographic" sounds great on first listen.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 05:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I have the new single on repeat, it's kind of face melting. I can only imagine what it will sound like in clubs.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:05 (nineteen years ago) link

It's massive. He's probably the most self-consciously anthemic producer working right now - hence the flashbacks to "Take Me With You".

The closest anyone else comes to what he's doing that I can think of is Freeform Five's "Strangest Things (Remix)", which is massive in a slightly different way (a more maximalist everything but the kitchen kinda way).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:18 (nineteen years ago) link

It's odd you mention Cosmos, it came up on my Ipod on Wednesday and I was really struck by it again. certainly the "Heartbeats" mix is very similar.

btw Tim there's a great DJ T mix from last year knocking around Slsk if you can find it. "Blue Monday" and even "Killer" feature!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:24 (nineteen years ago) link

If it ever turns up on limewire I'll nab it. Have I thanked you enough for introducing me to "Freemind"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:27 (nineteen years ago) link

haha, could be JX!
-- teh pow! (stevem7...), September 28th, 2004 1:45 PM. (blueski) (later) (link)

what do i win?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:46 (nineteen years ago) link

probably not, Tim, I prefer "Phantomas" myself though I have to say.

On reflection "Killer" is extremely close to the Get Physical style. Apparently Michael Mayer's been playing it too.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:48 (nineteen years ago) link

rex the who?

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 1 October 2004 09:28 (nineteen years ago) link

dog, see it says it in massive capital letters in the title and is mentioned many times in the 100 posts on this thread.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 09:31 (nineteen years ago) link

why don't you just ask me?

REX THE DOG, Friday, 1 October 2004 09:49 (nineteen years ago) link

are you really a dog? do you know pippin?

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 1 October 2004 10:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"probably not, Tim, I prefer "Phantomas" myself though I have to say."

Oh they're all great, I just meant that "Freemind" was the first Get Physical track I think I consciously heard due to your mix.

I've been listening a lot to both the original and the Kohncke mix of "I Don't Know" today. Quiet Storm...

Do you like "Strangest Things" Ronan?

Also you should search the Michael Mayer mix of Antonelli Electr's "The Vogue"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 10:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I have only heard "Strangest Things" once or twice, knowingly, my friend bought it and played it over the shop system. I remember liking the MANDY mix but I am not sure about the other mixes. I'll try and get it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 10:42 (nineteen years ago) link

You don't want the original but the Freeform Reform Dub. The M.A.N.D.Y. mix is good too, but the FRD one is like the Tiefschwarz Mix of Spectrum meets "Prototype".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 October 2004 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

btw Tim there's a great DJ T mix from last year knocking around Slsk if you can find it. "Blue Monday" and even "Killer" feature!

More details, please!

toby (tsg20), Friday, 1 October 2004 10:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm on now as mr_lamouche, there's a "Get Physical Music" folder and pretty much anything else I could find by them.

also I'm 3/4s of the way through a different DJ T set which includes Brett Johnson, Steve Bug, MANDY, Silversurfer, Kiko, Joakim etc etc etc and I'll put that there as soon as it's finished.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 11:01 (nineteen years ago) link

pretty much anything I could find by them IS IN that folder, I meant to say.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 1 October 2004 11:02 (nineteen years ago) link

it was me all along. sorry dudes.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 1 October 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

"WHO IS REX THE DOG?"

your childrens plastic surgeon you fucking ponce!

layne stayley, Friday, 1 October 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

???

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 2 October 2004 14:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Ronan you should also track down Covenant's "Bullet (Le Dust Sucker Mix)"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 2 October 2004 15:58 (nineteen years ago) link

And do, do get that Freeform Five - Strangest Things (Freeform Reform Dub). Right now it's sounding like the most amazing thing ever, the grand summation of everything that's great about electro-house at the moment. It's got everything!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I love the original of "Bullet".

As I said elsewhere, The Jackal-Jack Ain't Back, is a must have. It was out on Déssous about a year ago I think, complete with Steve Bug Remix.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 2 October 2004 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Five Rex the Dogs in a row (and more goodness besides) (RealAudio), for whoever reads this and isn't under the spell yet.

do get that Freeform Five - Strangest Things (Freeform Reform Dub)

Please do oh yes.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 2 October 2004 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

It took hearing I Look Into The Air for the first time on the way to a friend's this afternoon to convince me that Rex The Dog is actually God.

I mean, why has no one else mentioned how UTTERLY FUCKING INCREDIBLE this record is? Everything about it, the huge squealy noise, the retro 303 squelching about three minutes in, the evil bassline, the drum fill, the way that you think just when it can't go up another level IT DOES! Tune of the year - utter fucking magic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 3 October 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

It gave me the sort of instant YES!!!!!!! frantic head-nodding moment I haven't experienced since La Rock 01.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 3 October 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

check - the same thing happened to me on the motorway last night...

nick.K (nick.K), Sunday, 3 October 2004 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I am having alot of instant "YES" feelings with dance lately. more than usual even.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 3 October 2004 18:22 (nineteen years ago) link

this is a plea for "look into the air" host-age. stevem?

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Matt, it sounds like you are actually describing "Frequency". "I look into Mid Air" has vocals repeating the title over and over in it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Both sides sounded fantastic when I listened to them at the record store last week. I think I'm gonna buy the 12" today even though I know I shouldn't.

"I am having alot of instant "YES" feelings with dance lately. more than usual even."

So am I! I totally agreed with yer most recent blogpost Ronan (have even repeated it ad nauseum in one I'm writing) - it's like dance producers have, all of a sudden, en masse, had this epiphanic realisation as to just what electro could do for them. So many tracks which make me think "Yes! Why weren't people making tracks like this before now?"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Michael - argh! Damn mislabelling, it really is like the Poney EP again. I Look Into The Air is the French sounding one with the vocoder, right? And Frequency is the face-melter.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:26 (nineteen years ago) link

this is all a bit weird because there was a new JX single only 6 months or so ago and it was shite

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think its Williams*, if only because the JX remix is kinda different to everything else - somewhat flatter and more perfunctory.

*If this has been now scientifically proven beyond all reasonable doubt you are now free to laugh at me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:18 (nineteen years ago) link

to the best of my knowledge it's not ewan pearson and, really, i'm more likely than anyone else here to know if it was him.

stelfox, Monday, 4 October 2004 11:03 (nineteen years ago) link

it's been established that it is Williams, as odd as it seems. so what do we do now?

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Daub graffiti on his walls?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:32 (nineteen years ago) link

kill a lamb and offer it to him.

(Matt I was going to text you today and say the track you meant was probably mislabelled cos when I downloaded it it was mislabelled too, but I thought that'd be kind of sad of me)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm listening to the JX mix, now and OMG, it's JC Chasez without the guitar and shouty vocals!
