this definitely had a hand in his daughter's learning disability -- the kid didn't speak until she was almost 4. All that pot done fucked with his DNA for reals.

-- Je4nne ƒury (jeanneƒur...), November 14th, 2004.

surprised no one has addressed this. i don't doubt that pot affected your uncle's mind but i've never heard of any sort of altered DNA effect except from those ridiculous teen-scare films they showed in high school. and plenty of non-potheads have children with l.d.

I've smoked with my mom a bunch of times.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Monday, 15 November 2004 09:12 (nineteen years ago) link

some people really dig having sex while stoned but i am not one of them, it makes my orgasms weak.

weed + Loveless = nakedness = saturday night, and it was GOOOOOOOOD. but i know what you mean - its a knife-edge thing, and i hate when i'm so stoned that i become a less-than-entirely-attentive lover. but saturday was *perfect*.

wrt weed easing anxiety, i certainly prefer it to booze, which messes with my mood... but with weed, when i'm being social, i'm conscious that i'm kinda dopey, and in the wrong company that can make me anxious... but i still retain a clarity that booze usually robs me of, so by the end of the night everyone's loopy from booze and will feel shit the next day, but i'll be feeling fine.

Dud, nowadays. Used to smoke much of it in high school and a short time there after. once i had some laced with liquid lsd when I was 20 and I flipped out and had terrible anxiety everytime I smoked it from then on. Needless to say I haven't smoked much in about 10 years. probably about 5 times in ten years.

thai stick OTM. The altered DNA/pot connection is a myth. Though there is some evidence that pot smoking can interfere w/male reporductive system (in the same way that cig smoking does). And apart from dyslexia (which isn't associated w/ speech delay) there is scant evidence of a genetic basis for learning disabilities at least those on the autism spectrum.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:09 (nineteen years ago) link

It's okay in that context Stevie, I find it worse when people use it to refer to other people, ie "my lover and I". People say that, you run and vomit.

In answer to the question: classic, as long as it's not a wake-up, skin-up habit. Christ only knows how I got through my first year at university. Classic for: beer substitute while watching TV, sex, computer games, putting yourself to sleep, attending parties last Saturday with crazy northern Irish lads who are doing their best to prove that stereotypes do exist.
Dud: for sapping motivation and hiding from your life.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I have mixed feelings about the ganj, and I'm sure I've written this on ILE somewhere before (but can't remember where haha) but overall I'd say classic.

I didn't do drugs of any kind until I was about 24, when I smoked some hash, which I didn't like (I've done other drugs here and there, but very infrequently). It took a while to warm up to weed, but once I did, I became a fairly regular smoker - not a 'wake and bake' guy or anything, but at least 4-5 times a week. This went on for several years, and pretty much ended when I moved to the UK 2 years ago.

I suppose me and most of my friends would be considered 'potheads', but I'd like to think that we're in the favourable camp - i.e. we don't just act stupid and talk about weed - we have proper conversations about the world we live in and life in general. Often these conversations are more vibrant than if we were just sitting around sober or with a few beers. And yes - this has also been the sentiment from non-smokers who were with us. And even though I smoked a lot during this period of my late 20s/early30s, I managed to have an active social life, have a couple of very senior jobs, ran club nights, got a M.B.A., etc. Weed to me and most of my friends was just a treat - something that is a 'condiment' as someone upthread said - rather than the central focus of social interaction.

Unfortunately, during my final days in Toronto, some friends have fallen into the 'dull stoner' category, where they just haven't progressed. I've seen some geuninely hyper-intelligent people become, well, stupid. And one friend has become a full-blown 'addict' (as he puts it) who is now seeing a therapist. Granted, he has his own issues (which include alcohol as well), but the weed didn't help. Another problem is that I find weed makes me congested - when I go to sleep my breathing is very restricted, which is annoying. Plus I'm not fond of the fog/haze that I sometimes get in the morning after a night of many joints, which my friends do favour (I like a little bit - giant blunts are just not necessary IMO).

I don't like being associated with pot culture, which I guess is a bit snobby of me, but I'd always clean up the apartment from pot accessories (removing the bong is key) when guests were coming over. I really don't think this was a result of being paranoid - I just don't like looking like an obvious stoner from first glance. I'd never lie about my smoking - I'm happy to admit it - although I still haven't talked about it with my parents, which is a bit silly I suppose, but there ya go.

Anyway, when I left Canada (a weed-friendly country, of course - we had home delivery guys with their own fridge magnets and everything) my weed smoking became a rare treat, which is how I like it. I don't really want to return to being a regular smoker, because I have noticed that I am a lot more clear-headed these days, and when I do smoke it is a lot more fun, rather than just 'maintenance'. I wish my friends were at this point, and hopefully they will be soon.

for me:
weed + watching hockey = classic
weed + music = very classic
weed + hanging with immature stoners = dud
weed + social functions where most are non-smokers = kinda dud, but depends
weed + dance clubs/gigs = classic
weed + sitting on the dock at the cottage in summertime = ULTIMATE CLASSIC

God I just bumped into Tim, who I used to smoke with. Not seen him in two years. He's still insanely skinny, and would look about 14 if he didn't have lines around his eyes. He's just got a Xmas job in Argos and they may pay for him to do an NVQ, apparently. This is a guy who went to grammar school and was a straight A student until he was 14 when he started TAKING DRUGS. OH NO! It's like REEFER MADNESS.

Obviously most people I know who've taken drugs are not this bad.

I've smoked weed laced with lsd (without knowing) aswell. Aside from having to call in "hallucinating" to work early the next morning - I had a rather good time.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think you can smoke LSD. You probably drank something mixed with LSD.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Or whoever must have dipped the roach in some liquid acid. Just sayin'.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Ya - it was pot LACED with acid = smoked it.
Plus everyone else who smoked the pot that night went batty aswell.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:01 (nineteen years ago) link

this sounds like pot laced with angel dust to me, not acid

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:02 (nineteen years ago) link

No. I was hallucinating for almost 6 hours. I've done acid before - I know what it's like. Although I've never done "angel dust" before, as far as I'm aware, but I'm pretty sure it's effects are not that similar to acid.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

first off you CANT SMOKE LSD and second WHY WOULD SOMEONE WASTE THEIR LSD ON WEED? third: POT MESSES WITH YOUR DNA?? this was discredited in the 50's! you guys sound like a mexican health class text book..geeze.

when I was in high school they told us that if you're a guy smoking pot will make you grow breasts. Kleinfelter's Syndrome, I believe they called it.

I've always wanted to form a band called "Pot Tits."

LSD is a chemical, ergo has a liquid form ergo can be added to absorbant paper such as cigarette papers and rolled and smoked.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I voted for President Bush most importantly because he holds strong moral convictions that do not waver. I believe America is in the middle of a culture war, perpetuated by Hollywood, the media, and (EDIT: pot-smoking) elitists who are tearing down the traditional values that are so important to me and my family. Secondly, I voted for him because he has not turned a blind eye to the problem of Islamic terrorists who are determined to kill us. He is a good man with clarity in his beliefs, and he sets a good example for my children. God Bless President Bush.

Cunn E. Servatif (Richard K), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

nick, if the rolling paper was dipped in lsd then rolled then placed on your lips for a bit then MAYBE youd start trippin. usually there has to be some time for the lsd to be absorbed in your skin. if your weed is dipped in it then you just burn it all away. thank you.

big chaki (chaki), Monday, 15 November 2004 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

LSD cannot be smoked. Chaki OTM.

i know a dude who smoked dusted weed and proceeded to punch a hole through a plate glass window at my high school. he had some anger problems anyway.

there was a poster that said as much in my high school health class far away from Mexico and long after the 50s. I tried to tell the teacher about it, but she seemed to agree with the poster not SCIENCE.

It is the most classic ever.

Since moving to a country with a less forgiving attitude towards weed, I have missed it profoundly. I'm sure it's been healthy for me to experience a period of my life without it, but having done so, I am unimpressed.

It will be one of the first things I do to inaugurate my return to the US of A, right after downing a large french vanilla iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts. Possibly I will then watch the Daily Show. This is my dream.

how different is smoking hash? i've only smoked it a bit in amsterdam on top of nicotine. you don't see it very much in the states

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:30 (nineteen years ago) link

my experiences with hash have been largely negative (that isn't to say unpleasant but just... very mildly high, i guess), but i've also heard that the quality of hash varies even more wildly than pot.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I've hung out with a lot of people who smoke the pot, and I have never been around the types described upthread, those who smoke it 24/7 AND talk about it 24/7. I don't doubt they exist, but I think they're a rarer breed than is generally claimed.
