I haven't been able to properly digest the new album but it's pleasing me greatly so far.

Been drinking my morning coffee to Old No. 1 lately, a great if not perfect record for this. The needle's jumping on Rita Ballou and Texas - 1947 pretty bad which is bummin me out.

Good all the way through to my ears so far, Coat is becoming a real favorite of mine.

At his best, he's so great. (Most of Old No. 1 and Dublin Blues, about half of Texas Cookin' and Boats to Build Almost all the rest of the time, he's at or near his worst. I think I jumped off the boat (relatively late) with Cold Dog Soup. Is there anything since that's worth hearing?

Funny, when he was a young man he wrote great songs about old men. In middle age he wrote great songs about not aging gracefully. Now he's getting to be probably the age of the characters in "Let Him Roll" and "Desperadoes" (if not quite the gunfighter in "Texas, 1947"), what's he up to?

L.A. Freeway is immense. Beautiful song.

Also, I know a dude who's done merch for Guy and he says if you can catch him live, do it, because he has a lot of health problems that are rapidly catching up with him (alcoholism, dementia, etc.).

The South Coast of Texas isn't a bad record either, but Old No 1 unsurpassable. I need to hear Texas Cookin and the Self Titled. Sometimes I can't decide if he does his own songs better or if it's the people who covered them, like Townes, Willie or Jerry Jeff.. His Christmas eve performance on Heartworn Highways is classic.

With a sharp, springy, never showy house band, led by a ditto vocalist always ready for non-pushy duet duty, the Guy Clark tribute mostly accentuates raging or talking back to or riding out or getting the hell out of the way of or otherwise dealing with the dying of the light, to the extent anyone can. All in the commons, and the details of each lot. Clark's people got business to 'tend to. And no matter how mellow things may sometimes get, "son of a bitch's always bored me" is never too far away. (Track Seven: Willie Nelson nicely deflates the excess melodrama usually found in covers of "Waiting For Train" (yep, that moneyshot chorus), by taking the whole thing at a brisk, even business-like tempo, which actually makes it more affecting.)

only stumbling block/speed bump: Rodney Crowell, of all people (lonngg-time compadre of both Clarks)kicks things off rather distantly. Maybe he's thinking of times past? Just sounds distant, or not into it.

this is terrible terrible news, don't know that any other country artist meant more to me, I love merle haggard (RIP) but Guy Clark was my favourite country songwriter.

I guess I hadn't realized he'd been so ill for so long.

"I have some pretty special memories of sitting in his basement luthier workshop, a portrait of Townes overlooking ("He watches me all day") in wistful clouds of puffed spirit sprinkled smoke - remnants of which were forever tapped into a hand-built clay ashtray on his workbench ("Emmy Lou made me that")."

RIP, Guy. What a gem he was. For fans of the first 2 albums who haven't checked anything else out, Dublin Blues is great from stem to stern.

went to Goodwill yesterday and found three pristine promos of Guy Clark albums -- s/t, The South Coast of Texas, and Better Days. They're all good, Better Days is maybe the best one. Lots of incredible musicianship on this album, Vince Gill is basically Clark's #2 on this album, and it's pretty a remarkable set.

Oh main, get outta here with that---you lucky! Rodney Crowell's recent Close Ties incl. a startled, starting song about Susannah Clark--gotta check some of the songs she wrote for and with others, don't think she recorded more than songwriter demos?---was thinking about her painting of a shirt hanging on the cover shot of Old No. 1, which is now on a CD with Texas Cookin', an album I haven't heard; how is it?
Isbell was on a recent PBS Guy trib, shifting his voice just enough to make the chorus of "Desperadoes Waiting For A Train" sound like insistent calls from the past--rather than heavy-handed mellerdrama, as some other singers have done.

Just heard James McMurtry's cover of "Cold Dog Soup" for the first time, really dig it.
