Yeah, you are right about the Comus. It is an arse.

that's sad cuz get back usually does a great job.

i bought 4 men with beards copy of gene clark's white light and there was a major glitch during with tomorrow. definitely a pressing problem. made me really sad till i remembered that i already owned a prefectly fine original copy of the album. hahahaha! i'm such a dunce.

huh. i had the 4 Men w/ Bears version of White Light and I don't think I noticed anything wrong with it. Then I upgraded.
I've heard ppl complain about Four Men a lot though--noisy pressings, etc.

'four men with bears' is kind of a great name for something

i've never had any other problems with 4Men stuff. their big star 3rd is now in my pantheon of jawdroppingingly great vinyl pressings.

Obviously not very contemporary, but my UK issue of Husker Du "New Day Rising" sounded horrible, loud surface noise all the way through. I think it was the whole pressing too, not just my copy. How come SST did that with one of their big sellers and all the Zoogz Rift, Leaving Trains et al pressings were fine?! Probable answer : weed.

4MWB were responsible for the recent Fahey fuck-up!

ian, Saturday, 10 October 2009 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

it's crazy how even recent releases of Jamaican stuff end up pressed all goofy

I got a reissue of Super Ape and the sticker on one side was so off-center it covered up the grooves on the last song on that side

Probable answer : weed.

I took it back and exchanged it btw

not a very interesting observation two years late but I heard a song off that Portishead record in a bar yesterday (We Carry On) and it kinda blew me away, I had no idea they had moved into that Silver Apples / USA / Broadcast type of zone

dmr, Saturday, 10 October 2009 20:41 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that's actually a really good record. wasn't expecting it to be so awes but it is!

so glad I didn't buy that Comus rec, and glad for this thread.

my copy of Sateenkaarisuudelma (by Es) has something really weird happen on side 4 track 1 but I haven't heard the CD and it could just be intended.

my Rafael Toral LP on Staubgold (long title, can't remember) had a ton of surface noise, brand new.

I once also took a copy of Stereolab's Switched On (Too Pure) back to the store for the same reason.

World Serpent vinyl was also notorious for this but everything I ever owned from them sounded fine.

i've gotten crappy stereolab vinyl twice over the years. two different records. (refried ectoplasm and transient random) the best stereolab vinyl i had was, surprisingly enough, a u.s. copy of emperor tomato ketchup on elektra.

well, the comus record is still amazing of course, and the skip happens within the first few seconds and the rest is fine, but yeah, ANNOYING AS FUCK.

Also I've had some other Get Back reissues that sound bad--their Elevators records for example are not great sounding, though not defective by any means.

ian, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i actually just have a cd copy of comus album. sounds fab.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

me too, that "Complete" double disc with the 2nd album and an unreleased 1st LP outtake as well as the Diana single.

sleeve, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

take it to ILM u sissies.

ian, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i know its heresy, but with some things i'm happy with what i've got. i can't be spending all my time tracking down reissues of stuff that i already own. too much out there.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link

there was someone on ilm who was way more troo than me. they wouldn't even buy reissues of stuff on vinyl. only the original. may pang, i think? whatever happened to may pang. i liked him/her.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:54 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know how you hear some stuff that way unless you're a millionare or something.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 October 2009 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

haha I thought "HERESY" as I posted

xp to ian

totally. one time I traded a guy who was a way bigger vinyl collector than me some CDRs of Fela Kuti stuff (right after Best Best came out I think and Fela stuff wasn't around as much as it is now) and he was like "holy shit this is so good!! I was waiting to find the original LPs, I've never heard any of this"

and I be like damn there's just some things you're not going to come across. Fela's not even the best example but basically yeah you gotta get some reissues if they're well done.

I don't know why I suddenly decided to reference the "sometimes I be like ..... DAAAMMMN" thread (which I now can't find) in that post

kinda sounding like an idiot there tbh :)
