Does anyone else this that Spirit Or Eden by Talk Talk was way more important than any of the bands mentioned in this thread? (barring mbv ov course)

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Important isn't even the word, just way better.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:38 (nineteen years ago) link

You can like all of 'em. As I do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 November 2004 01:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I’m still brand new but wanted to chime in, though I find it strange that you guys have all these classic or duds posts.

I would say classic but happen to really like a lot of stuff that came out around that time and would not put dud next to many bands except something like Curve. I also think its silly to compare Slowdive to Mojave 3 because they are very different bands. Mojave 3 are often overlooked because of the former but I think they are also really good. The best M3 album, IMO, happens to be Out Of Tune with the glorious “This Road I’m Travelling.” I will agree that Rachel’s album is just kind of there because I never listen to it. Neil’s album, on the other hand, is quite good though it does have a few fillers. I even think I listened to it more than the last M3 album. I was on slsk last week and Neil Halstead happened to be hanging out in one of the rooms. I joined the room after he was already chatting and was wondering why everyone was acting so strange. He was having computer problems and left. So I was writing about this on a music message board I usually post at, than low and behold he came back. He was saying that he is going to have a new solo album come out in February. I tried to say hi but his computer was having problems and I never got a word in edge wise.

Moose are brilliant and will have to disagree with most of you on this thread again. The reason I say that is because they became better once they put away their petals, though I love that stuff as well. Moose turned into one of the best bands of the 1990’s once they mellowed out.

i'm interviewing slowdive - neil and rachel - on monday - any questions?

doomie the saint (jimmy the sainted kid of death), Saturday, 27 November 2004 09:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Ask Meil about the label he's working on putting together. You might always want to ask him about the studio he built. For both. I'd also like to know how they feel their solo projects differ from M3. I'd be weary of asking too many Slowdive related questions: I'm sure they'd both rather talk about present projects.

grapeshine (grapeshine), Saturday, 27 November 2004 11:49 (nineteen years ago) link

ALthough, it'd be nice to know if there are any re-issues lined up...

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Saturday, 27 November 2004 15:15 (nineteen years ago) link

An archival live album might be nice, if the reissue generates enough interest. Based on the three times I saw them and the bootlegs I've heard, it would be well worthy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 November 2004 15:42 (nineteen years ago) link

This bootleg of unreleased stuff I just dl-ed off Soulseek is great. A treat for a slow week-end...

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Saturday, 27 November 2004 16:35 (nineteen years ago) link

i agree with bee, moose improved immeasurably once they went country. the early eps are great but they found their stride or their sound when they discovered 'witchita lineman'. russell moose has too lovely a voice for it to have remained obscured by the pedals. they are recording a new record now, according to the le grand magistery website.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I have to thank Andy K. for making some CDRs for me of all sorts of Moose rarities and goodies -- v. good of him! And good for Moose for keeping on keeping on -- who'd've thought they'd be the long haul band in the end?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned, I know this is not the appropriate (or however you spell that) thread for requests but I've being DYING to get hold of some of those Moose rarities (Moon is Blue, Boy, Kidney Bingos, etc.) Any chance you could share some of them (totalpop at gmail)?

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 27 November 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

...they are recording a new record now...

OMG I AM CRYING WITH JOY NOW!

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 27 November 2004 21:56 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm interviewing slowdive - neil and rachel - on monday - any questions?

Ask them if they know whatever happened to Blind Mr. Jones. Neil & Rachel were friends of theirs, and I always wondered where/what bands they disappeared to

Gator Magoon (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 27 November 2004 22:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Keith, where in the LGM website did you find that Moose were recording a new album?

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 27 November 2004 22:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Now I get the whole classic or dud thing because I started my first thread.

I have most of that Moose stuff up on slsk, same user name. I also had a request for some EP’s so Liquid Eye Makeup and Baby It’s Over have been added but only for a limited time. I also dug into my Boo Radleys singles, again because of requests. Usually only on at night, California time. That Moose news is fantastic and made my day.

I can see staying away from Slowdive related stuff, as far as questions are concerned, but have always wondered what happened to that drummer? I caught them live a few times and he was insane, always blew me away.

BeeOK (BeeOK), Sunday, 28 November 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

The drummer stayed on in Mojave 3, I'm not sure if he's still with them though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm listening to "I Saw the Sun" now (thanks for the heads up, Baaderonixxx) and -- to the surprise of no one on this thread -- it's quite good. Particularly "Silver Screen". It's very much in the style of "Machine Gun" and would have fit in very well on "Souvlaki".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 28 November 2004 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been listening to this all w-e. 'Untitled #2' ("I thought I saw you") could well already be one of my fave Slowdive song.

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Sunday, 28 November 2004 23:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been so ridiculously slow in listening to all those demos -- I've got 'em around but have only heard a few.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 November 2004 23:47 (nineteen years ago) link

but have always wondered what happened to that drummer?

do you mean simon scott? dude who went on to front Inner Sleeve?

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll just reiterate what others have said - Moose! Fantastic! A new album? Even more fantastic!

Anyway, back to Slowdive. Isn't there a double CD on Sanctuary coming out in the very near future? According to the NME review it's got their first Peel session on it, which would be nice, but probably not a lot of rarities other than that. But still, better than nothing.

I never thought he was in Mojave 3.

Not a direct link, you have to look around for the Scott Simon interview.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 25 March 2005 10:32 (nineteen years ago) link

You left before the Pygmalion album, what were your reasons for leaving?

- Neil was taking so much time writing and he moved to London so the rest of us were stuck in Reading frustrated. We weren’t allowed to contribute and I wanted to keep playing music and wrote songs so I moved on.

- I recently saw Nick and Christian and they said they wished they’d left when I went as I believe it all went stale. But I hold no grudges and would definitely like to see them all again. Christian has already been down to see Televise play live so hopefully the others will make it to a show.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 25 March 2005 12:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I've only Souvlaki and a handful of Pygmalion-era mp3s (but I've heard the EPs and that early flexi thanks to that one wonderful website containing them all) and from that I deem them utterly classic.
six months pass...
Guy I was talking to tonight on a music journalist list I'm on is writing liner notes for the reissues of the three albums -- yes, there will be bonus tracks, including Peel Session cuts...
