Geoff needs more love on this thread.

The scene where Geoff is letting the air out of the wrestler's tire and you just see the wrestler's boots approach is great.

I watched season 3 and 4 back to back over the course of the last 3 days. the endings to the shows in sn. 3 are outstanding / funny throughout.

AdamL's photo makes me think taking photos of TV screens with closed captioning would be a good art project, wherein the closed captioning represents the photo's title.

Larry: Apparently, no one wants to have anything to do with me because of the Shaq thing.
Cheryl: That's... kinda sad.
Larry: What, are you kidding?

[while ordering coffee at Starbucks]
Larry David: I'll have a vanilla... one of those vanilla bullshit things. You know, whatever you want, some vanilla bullshit latte cappa thing. Whatever you got.

[after leaving a terrible dinner party]
Larry: What's the level of anger here? What am I dealing with?
Cheryl: Well, I'd have to say at least an 8.7.
Larry: 8.7? That's not that bad. I thought it would be at least a 9.
Cheryl: It was a 9. Then you broke that lamp, and the crazy woman screamed at you, and it got you some pity points.
Larry: Pity points. That's fabulous, I love pity points. But how can I get to a 7? I know a 6 is out of the question, but is there any way I can get to a 7?

Larry: Nice house.
Susie: Yeah, come on. I'll give you a tour.
Larry: Naw, it's ok.
Susie: No, come on.
Larry: No, it's ok. I-I get it.
Susie: You get it?
Larry: Yeah, it's a house. It's new. I get it. It's nice.
Susie: You get it? Ok, you know what? Get the fuck out of my house, Larry.

[repeated line]
Cheryl: Why would you do that?

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 16 January 2005 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic but it's creepy seeing one "real" man be both Jerry/George, really. And fascinating. And the whole thing's kinda beautiful, man. Cheryl makes a goodish Elaine (so far, seen only four eps properly). Surprising how people're saying LD/TVLD's unlikeable, I like him fine!

Way better than Seinfeld.

So so good. I just got the DVD of the first season for Xmas. You see, I don't have HBO. I also just got the DVD of the 4th Sopranos season. I'm always behind on this HBO stuff. Amazingly, I've always managed to avoid Sopranos spoilers (altho I pretty much figured out what happens at the end of Sopranos 5, oh well.)

CYE is hilarious. I haven't laughed out loud so much in a long long time. And yeah, the jewelry store thing was hilarious.

when's the new season, anyone?

i actually didn't want to move out of the place that i lived even though it was a horrendous arrangement for fear of not having hbo and thereby missing curb your enthusiasm.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I bought Season 2 today, partly because I read this thread in the morning. I haven't seen season 1 yet, is that going to be a problem? People were saying that it gets better as it goes along so I got the most recent collection they had.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

both seasons available are hilarious

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Season 3 DVD comes out Tues! There's a new season in production now, but it won't air until maybe late this year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 16 January 2005 23:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic but does anyone know when (if?) it's on in Toronto now? I used to watch it regularly Sunday nights on Showcase but it hasn't been on at that time in a while. The Showcase website doesn't seem to even list it anymore so I wonder if they've dropped it.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:31 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG, the episode with the guy in the wheelchair and the Wagner is classic. I tend not to like L.A. centricism, but the meta/autobiographical elements here are great. It is weird seeing the Seinfeld refractions, the little elements of the different characters popping up in LD's mannerisms.

My Seinfeld-loving girlfriend did not like it, unfortunately, 'cause she hates the wife character. I don't blame her, even though I think those scenes are largely well done.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Almost bought Season 1 a while back but I think I had to hold off due to having to buy holiday gifts. Soon.

The bringing-disparate-plot-elements-together thing must almost be a reflex for him now.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:31 (nineteen years ago) link

How can you not like Cheryl David? She's so awesome.

The Wagner episode I think is my all-time favorite.

"With all due respect, officer, you are not bald, you have chosen to shave your hair. That's a look you're cultivating to be fashionable, and we don't really consider you part of the bald community."

Hahahhahahahahhahahahahahahah.

Cheryl is such a fantastic character. And hot, to boot. She really comes across as the only woman in the entire world who could possibly love and tolerate Larry David. She's just as intelligent as him, but has social mores and a sense of societal responsibility.

I watched all four series over a short period of time, and now when I try to watch it again I just find it too unbearable. When you know just how badly he's going to fuck things up... ugh.

Genius, none the less. At its funniest, much funnier than Seinfeld.

Hmm. "That's like riding around in a wheelchair for the fun of it!"

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:34 (nineteen years ago) link

he has such expressive hands. they're really funny I find. I can laugh through a whole episode by just following his hands.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 17 January 2005 10:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Does Cheryl, um, do anything? Like work? Or does she just read and hang out keep Larry in line?

i seem to remember that she is some sort of environmental activist. in several episodes she is organizing events, asking for donations, etc.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Real answer to the question: she's the wife of the creator of Seinfeld. You wouldn't have a real job, either.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

well, actually she is an actress. she is not really larry's wife.

I believe her character is an actress (see the episode where she was offered a role in the Vagina Monologues) but, perhaps after marrying Larry, has decided to focus on charity work.
