I first saw them on an NYC cable indie rock show, New York Noise. They were auditioning people off the street to be VJs. They're a lot funnier than you'd think based on their look and music.

Agree about the stripped back sound - they now sound on record a lot more like they do live. However, I think "The Bird of Music" has stronger songs than "Still Night...". Not heard the first one.

two years pass...

one of these bands i randomly d/l'd based off a pic (three naked asses on a...log?) and have progressively and increasingly enjoyed more and more with each subsequent listen. "sad song", for all it's simplicity, actually has a lot of subtle complexities i didn't start noticing until seemingly the 20th listen

they're indie as shit tho, my god

they are v.v. pretty, but has to be some of the most boring music i have ever heard.

bene_gesserit, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:19 (nine years ago) link

i liked a couple of their songs from way back... "backyards" or something? wasn't nuts about what i heard subsequently.

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:29 (nine years ago) link

i do appreciate their name

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:32 (nine years ago) link

"Shadows" is a brilliant song, and they'll always be heroes for their turn on Aeroplane's remix of "Paris" and Shinichi Osawa's cover of "Star Guitar".

boxedjoy, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:34 (nine years ago) link

I can't actually remember how any of their songs went, now. Apart from the Aeroplane remixes.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 16 March 2012 15:35 (nine years ago) link

The first half of the last album is lovely, but it gets a bit samey after that. Bits of the Julia Holter album remind me of them actually, although only one segment of a song.

four months pass...

erika spring just released her own solo titled ep - given it a couple listens. it's fun, but unmemorable at parts. kinda pastiche in that brooklyn way that's sorta the norm.

real nice atmosphere atmosphere throughout tho. i'm looking forward to her full release.

kelpolaris, Monday, 16 July 2012 19:08 (nine years ago) link

director's obvious play at getting erika to prowl and un-clothe under limits of legality

kelpolaris, Monday, 16 July 2012 19:09 (nine years ago) link

oops, it's a dude.

*chick. bye.

Their new record is coming out next week and is streaming now at NPR. If you're down with the ARS sound, you will dig this hot new wax, people.

Has it really been 3 and a half years since the last one? Blimey.

Jeff W, Monday, 23 September 2013 15:05 (eight years ago) link

4 and a half even!

Jeff W, Monday, 23 September 2013 15:07 (eight years ago) link

I regret to say I am not digging this hot new wax at all :(

Jeff W, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 18:36 (eight years ago) link

That's crazy talk man!

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 23:09 (eight years ago) link

Yeah not feeling this either, it hasn't got the lightness of touch of the last one.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 10:00 (eight years ago) link

I like it

St3ve Go1db3rg, Saturday, 28 September 2013 21:14 (eight years ago) link

I like this more than any other album of theirs I've heard, even though it is very front-loaded. I keep expecting them to belt but it's still all very restrained, which is actually quite nice.

boxedjoy, Monday, 30 September 2013 22:16 (eight years ago) link

ARS don't belt. They waft.

I like Still Night better but this is still a fine record.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 00:49 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, it would be unexpected and weird if they were to start belting, but the songs seem to lend themselves to these big moments that seem even sweeter because they keep things grounded. When I'm singing along to this in the car I find it very easy to oversing along.

this song is so good

treeship 2, Monday, 20 November 2017 12:34 (three years ago) link

They sounded great on Twin Peaks.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 November 2017 16:51 (three years ago) link

yes i'm a big fan of them. the way to there has similar chords to cranberries ode to my family, they mix very well

first new track in six years?

Love that. Hope this isn’t a one off. Welcome back, anyway.

Jeff W, Friday, 15 May 2020 17:42 (one year ago) link

Thank you for sharing. Love this band.

treeship., Friday, 15 May 2020 22:06 (one year ago) link

the last verse of a violent yet flammable world, with the overlapping vocals, is one of my favorite things ever recorded

treeship., Friday, 15 May 2020 22:28 (one year ago) link

this new track was unreleased from 2011 -- new new music may be unlikely, but I'm hopeful!

winters (josh), Saturday, 16 May 2020 06:01 (one year ago) link

That's a shame, but glad to hear this anyway.

Another song, “Come Away”, has just been uploaded to Bandcamp
