WHAT IS THIS? A SONG FOR ANTS?

What's this? A song for ANTS?

Zooalba (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

'Everlong' is great because to me it's the point where Grohl finally fessed up to loving Van Halen more than Sub Pop - all fun all the drivetime

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Unlike a lot of the songs in this poll, Loser sounds really limp ten years on.

The Foo Fighters placing above Nirvana would be some kind of victory against rockism, I feel (even if Everlong is the only song of there's a I really love).

I've no idea what's on the nominations list or what is going to make the Top 10. There isn't the unexploded bomb of another Belle and Sebastian song is there?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I might be wrong about the two D.I. songs, MiR, but if history has taught me one thing, it's to never underestimate the vote of the corny indie fuxx.
Corny indie fuxx in 90's poll = people who vote based on "moral values" in US elections

How do you feel about Corny Hip-Hop Fuxx? Because there seem to be a lot of those around.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I am still baffled as to why liking DI makes one a corny indie fuck nowadays.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I suspect there may well be, sleeping at bus stops...

The best looking boys are taken
The best looking girls are staying inside..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Perhaps not. Judy and the Dream of Horses doesn't seem to have been nominated, so that pretty much counts out my prediction.

There isn't enough balance to this thread. Some of us should start to rant incoherently about how the list isn't indie ENOUGH.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

there are, aren't there? Their reaction when I say something like "Diamond Princess is a better album than Illmatic" is akin to the reaction of cornie indie fuxx when I say something like "Emma Bunton is better than Wilco". And they really hate Princess Superstar!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:40 (nineteen years ago) link

HOW COULD THIS POLL HAVE IGNORED THE PASTELS WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THE PASTELS YOU CRAZY BUNCH OF INDIE HATERS. FUCK YOU FOR HAVING YOUR OWN TASTES, FUCK YOU FOR VOTING FOR WHAT YOU LIKED AND WHAT'S ALL THIS AMERICAN SHIT DOING HERE?!?!?!?!?!?!

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, "from the Dr Dolittle soundtrack" says it all, really.
You are stupid.

So what you're saying is that you would have wanted ppl to vote for stuff *you* like, instead of stuff they like, so *your* tastes would have been better reflected on the list.
Uh-huh.

Um no not at all - actually I was suggesting the opposite, it was a little rhetorical trick, essentially I don't think ANY artist should have five songs in the top 100 singles of the decade, or if it is they certainly should have earned it. I LIKE st. etienne (in fact, I think I voted for "Like a Motorway") yet I think wu-tang's 5 best singles trump st. etiennes, but that point aside, I think its pretty clear where ILM's heart is in this matter.

wtf is Beck's "Loser" doing all the way up here?

(I'm not questioning the results, that this is what many ILMers really believe, but that doesn't mean I can't complain about it - you know, like that election that happened the other day.)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:50 (nineteen years ago) link

"Loser" is still great and it's all because of the slide guitar and the wrong, deranged Spanish.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

You are stupid.
Ha ha ha. Trolled someone after all.

(I'm not questioning the results, that this is what many ILMers really believe, but that doesn't mean I can't complain about it - you know, like that election that happened the other day.)

Sure, but you made it sound as if you thought the collated results should reflect your view of the nineties better. (When the point is that only your own list does that, and the end list reflects no one's)

Vasquesz, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Not MY view, but a DIVERSE view. I'm not v. familiar w/ d'n'b but I'm glad to see it represented. I didn't vote for Omni trio (i hadn't heard it before) but I'm glad someone did because its a sound that isn't really well-represented here.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I posted this elsewhere, but: I'd guess that most ILM people have far more diverse listening habits now than they did in the 90s - due to age, easier access to music etc, all sorts of things. Just like you didn't vote for Omni Trio cos you hadn't heard it, probably a large amount of people didn't vote for whatever hip-hop tracks missed out because they hadn't heard them - that's definitely true of me.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:12 (nineteen years ago) link

You're never going to get all sounds represented, even if you just had one track from each genre.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

WTF WHERE THE HELL DID THE TIBETAN FREE-JAZZ PRESENCE GO???????????? DID NONE OF YOU HAVE EARS IN 1994???????

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

But no Grupo Niche?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

(Also, right now at this very second, the best song from the 90s was "Slip Inside This House".)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

that Dr. Doolittle crap on the aaliyah single cover makes me sad.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

"Cielo de Tambores" is probably better than anything on this list, including all the stuff I haven't heard (which is mostly by three bands anyway).

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

that Dr. Doolittle crap on the aaliyah single cover makes me sad.

It made me happy!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Lex OTM -- I think that's what I was trying to get at earlier in a less succinct form.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

(for me personally, as a teenager growing up in rural England, hip-hop may as well not have existed outside of a few singles here and there (I voted for No Diggity, California Love and Got Your Money), it certainly wasn't the ubiquitous pop culture force it is now. it's very irritating in hindsight as it'd have been stellar to grow up with those singles as a soundtrack.)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

(Belle and Sebastian put me off living)

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

yeh i'm gutted about De'Lacy too - best house track of the 90s
Allow me to correct this typo,
"Yeh I'm gutted about Eddie Amador's "House Music" too -- best house track of the 90's"

I am still baffled as to why liking DI makes one a corny indie fuck nowadays.
Actually, he was referring to Neutral Milk Hotel at the time.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I would like to make a correction, it was Shreddies not Wheaties that I think I was eating that day.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:41 (nineteen years ago) link

it wasn't a typo Barry, it was my opinion

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I know :)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i mean could there BE a more annoying way of pointing out you disagree with someone on something?!?!?!

WTF WHERE THE HELL DID THE TIBETAN FREE-JAZZ PRESENCE GO???????????? DID NONE OF YOU HAVE EARS IN 1994???????

haha Not that they're Tiberan free jazz but I think everyone should have voted for the Siberian throat singer and Finnish minimal electronic duo I nominated for the albums list. And, yes, Indian classical music and Japanese improv were robbed.

Steve, I wasn't trying to be accusatory or insult your taste. I'm sorry if it appeared as though I was. I just copied your line as a joke and used it to reflect my own tastes. I didn't mean any harm by it.
Again, sorry for the misunderstanding.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

relax, i know it's jokey, it's just annoying with it, but then it's Supercrank Stevem this week all week here

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I blame Belle & Sebastian.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:58 (nineteen years ago) link

what time is the #1 likely to be announced? i'd like to be here for the final 10 but what with Gear on crazy time i'm not sure that'll happen.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 15:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, the U.S. is

Eastern Time
Central Time
Mountain Time
Crazy Time

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I really think it's time Crazy and Mountain linked up. We need Crazy Mountain Time.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Newfietime is a half hour before all that.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:10 (nineteen years ago) link

the very idea that the de'lacy or amadour tracks are the best house tracks of the nineties is madness!

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

It's funny you should say that, because stevem is actually clinically insane.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Since Gear posted right before he went to bed last night, I would guess that he won't post in the morning, instead, he will post the final ten in the early afternoon, California time.

Just a guess, mind you -- one that should perhaps be ignored considering my unimpressive success rate in predicting the outcome of this poll.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:20 (nineteen years ago) link

sundar wait for judgement until the albums list has been posted :)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:21 (nineteen years ago) link

The final 10 will be posted during an hour prime-time special in front of a live studio audience.
