So sad. From 1983 to 1986 when I was living in southern Connecticut and sick of law school studying but not interested in hanging out with my classmates I used to stay in and listen to Mr. Magic with Marley Marl on the WBLS radio Rap Attack show out of NYC. I still have a cassette tape I think somewhere of their show. Awesome mixes and Mr. Magic's voice--calling out to "Moneymaking Manhattan, the Boogie Down Bronx, Brooklyn USA, etc." R.I.P.

Rap Attack was certainly one of the first rap songs I ever heard. And Mr Magic's Wand was on the same comp. 1984, yo. And it made it to my whitebread town in rural Oregon. That says something about the power of a song.

friday nights in the v. early 80s I would (sometimes) stay in to catch Mr. Magic on tiny NJ station WHBI (he came on right after reggae DJ Gil Bailey)
OH MY GOD I'M HAVING A RAP ATTACK...

The VLAD interview with Big Daddy Kane on Shan vs. BDP was an eye opener, for me:

Thinking about Mr. Magic, because this past Saturday at the memorial service for Lloyd Pinchback, who played sax, flute, & cowbell in Chuck Brown’s Soul Searchers , Lloyd’s more recent band , dc go-go group Proper Utensils played a jazzy go-go version of Grover Washington Jr.’s Mr Magic, and it reminded me of hearing that as dj host Mr Magic’s opening theme circa 83 - 86. Used to hear other old school r’nb bands play it too.
