You'd better put some clear water between you and this thread....

Like Lady Sov or the miserable MIA if they had any talent At. All.

David Orton (scarlet), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:02 (eighteen years ago) link

The best thing I can imagine this being is the new Betty Boo but I have a horrible feeling I'm going to be disappointed. What exactly are the words Belle and Sebastian doing on this thread?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:18 (eighteen years ago) link

keith allen’s daughter or not, she can write some sweet lyrics

That's the first thing I always look for in any form of music - good lyrics

Vitbe... *pause*... Is Good Bread (Dada), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow this thread has gone from hype to backlash within the space of a week: that's a new ILM record!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:23 (eighteen years ago) link

This is feeling more "like" cheese vs. chalk every post, and I'm regretting the Lady Sov comment quite a bit.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:25 (eighteen years ago) link

actually i think the first strokes thread STARTED as backlash.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Doesn't count then. I haven't looked but I assume the Dave Matthews band one did too.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:56 (eighteen years ago) link

right, ok, i went to her myspace finally and she describes herself as "pop/indie/ska".

i never want to hear any of you so-called 'pop' 'kids' mention her name to me again.

Too bad Lex! I have now been made aware of exactly which "team" is working on this. I like LDN and will be blaring it out before I go out.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 5 May 2006 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

the 'mixtape' sounds good.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 5 May 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago) link

dude the mix is GREAT! the only thing that lets it down is jammer's "go dj" (#15)

so's we don't get confused - "Go DJ" is by JAMMIN' (aka DJ Zinc) (NOT the later grime dude Jammer, whose early productions were routinely FABO!)
agreed re Zinc, most of that whole run of breakstep is dud
one tune at a time ain't bad though, whole night of em's excruciating

love Lily's mix!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 5 May 2006 11:52 (eighteen years ago) link

'Go DJ' was good but obv. in '138 Trek' shadow. The version I had featured this great stringy bit.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 5 May 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago) link

this music sounds like what would happen if someone locked nellie mckay in a room with only forced exposure's servicing as nourishment

maura (maura), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Listen to the mixtape now. Great so far.

"LDN" sounded pretty good on first listen, but I think that "Smile" song on the mixtape is even better, a lovely summer jam. Old bluebeat tune plus cheeky cockernee singing works for me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:10 (eighteen years ago) link

9 is 'She taught me to yodel' by Peter Barry... and that '31 seconds' tune is called Valley of the Shadows by Origin Unknown from about 1993

Agree that 9 isn't Montana Slim as I'd originally thought, but, um, which one is that '31 seconds' tune? I'm still not getting a name for 7 some dancehall guy, 8 another dancehall guy, and 17 some funky dubby thing (one of which may be 31 seconds for all I know).

Only heard two or three Nellie McKay songs but once upon a time read scads of Forced Exposures, and I'm not perceiving Lily having much connection to either Nellie or FE. I suppose she's closer to them than to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but still not particularly close. I mean, I doubt she's fucked a pig in her life.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 6 May 2006 02:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyway, as far as I know, Lily got her first ILX mention on the teenpop thread, so classic.

the jungle track at the end is origin unknown's "valley of the shadows (31 seconds)", omni trio VIP remix, right?

Lily's stuff is pretty good! Not so much M.I.A. or Lady Sov for me - more like The Streets' "Let's Push Things Forward" meets Ms Dynamite's "Dynamitee" and lots of Lina. Lex you will really like it!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 6 May 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago) link

But her voice reminds me a lot of Martina Topley-Bird, plus the Morcheeba singer.

(also, i actually *like* this stuff! i listened to 'ldn' about six times yesterday.)

lets start talking major labels - do you think shes gonna get signed by jay-z to def jam or lil jon to BME? i think if lumidee can have a hit lily allen can have TEN hits! i cant wait til she performs on the grammies with ghostface, kelly clarkson, three 6 mafia, big'n'rich, clipse and dipset!!!

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I like the Lily song that's fourth on the mixtape quite a bit more than LDN. Less bouncy and twee-sounding, she does more singing.

"some sweet French Europop thing"

I had a cynical wish that this was going to be Desireless "Voyage Voyage"....

al dada (JTS), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually just listened to "Shame On You," which does sound like something that Nellie McKay might do. Apologies. (And I'm still confused about which track on the mixtape is supposed to be General Levy and which Origin Unknown. That's what threw me. Sorry for being so dense.) (And still not knowing #7, either. Is #17 the General Levy? I've not heard General Levy before, obv., or Origin Unknown.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 7 May 2006 11:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Lex won't like it, people who like pop in 'the wrong way' like it and she actually admits to being quite indie despite being a girl which as we all know makes her a GENDER TRAITOR. ;)

I want to like LDN - I really like her voice, that kind of crackly-forties-radio winsome tone, but I can't stand the lyrics and the tune's pretty flimsy. I got bored of the mixtape pretty quick as well, her songs didn't stand up that well with what surrounded them, sadness.

permanent revolution (cis), Sunday, 7 May 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago) link

"LDN" is the weakest tune of the ones I've heard though, i reckon. I much prefer "Shame For You" and "Not Big" and "Smile".

And many people who like M.I.A. are people who like pop "in the wrong way".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 7 May 2006 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Frank, you should hear General Levy's "Diamonds & Pearls", a great ragga-pop take on SWV's "I'm So Into You" rhythm.

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I probably would want to hear General Levy's "Diamonds & Pearls," but I still don't know which song on the mixtape is General Levy's "Incredible." Is it 17 (which I dubbed "some funky dubby thing") or is it 21 ("some junglish dance hall thing")? If the latter, then which track is Origin Unknown "Valley of the Shadows (31 Seconds)"? And who does song 7? (Sorry to be obtuse, if I'm missing something or not hearing where the lyrics give it away; I only got four hours of sleep last night.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

My favorite pop group ever is the Rolling Stones c. 1965, unless it's the Stooges in the early '70s. So I probably listen to pop in the wrong way too. But I can see how fans of "Sunshine Superman" and "Cruel Summer" and "Steal My Sunshine" and "Summertime" (the Fresh Prince number) - e.g., me - would like "LDN" too, even if they somehow manage to listen to pop in the right way. It has "summer song" written all over it. (Not guaranteed to break big on U.S. radio, however, since "CHR Rhythmic" and "rock" stations will probably steer clear, and calypso ska hasn't been breaking on CHR Pop since No Doubt changed its sound.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 7 May 2006 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Frank, I don't have Lily's mix open, but you can quickly hear what Origin Unknown "Valley Of The Shadows (31 Seconds)" sounds like (scintillating plinkyness), here:

Thanks Paul.

Which I've never heard, believe it or not, though I've got two different versions in Spanish ("Vuela Vuela"). What's cynical about wanting to hear it?

I quite liked her until I found out the Keith Allen thing. Such is the extent of my dislike for her Dad that I now find it impossible to like her. Deeply unfair, I know, but there you go.

I agree totally.

Lily Allen's sales: Higher than Mia's, lower than Estelle's.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 7 May 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Right, I get it: #20 is a mashup of the Origin Unknown track and one of Lily's own songs. And so I deduce that #21 is General Levy - which still leaves #s 7 and 17, unless one of you identified them upthread and I missed the identification.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 7 May 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

A few of her lyrics make me wince actually... It's odd watching this thread develop knowing it's a fait accompli that she's going to be huge whatever you say.

She's alright, pleasant, cheery, a bit individual & doesn't blend into the background (production, personality or otherwise) like a majority of pop at the moment. I think she's going to be oversold relative to how good she actually is (see also: Arctic Monkeys) as a result of the otherwise drab state of English chart pop (that isn't some kind of house-dance) in general.

I dunno, I might just delete those mp3's and wait for the album. I think all of these songs are going to sound much better on that somehow. I think my favourite of hers might be "everything's just fine" actually. The lo-fi-ness already suits the 60's kitsch-en sink backing to a tee there.
