The easiest way is to play the minidisc into the computer.

Do you know what file format is?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah the thing is that it's deleted the original recording and turned it into a ".omg" file. omg files seem to be a proprietary sony format which absolutely nothing that i know of will read (not as in "omg wtf", although they are aptly named) , but i thought there might be a way to crack it and convert it.

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:51 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought i could get into it because i have programs that will red ".ogg" files but this has beaten all my sound software and it's a fucker because it was a really good night that we'd all like to keep a recording of!

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I presume that that must be an ATRAC file. I can't find any software on the sony site to manipulate them. Can you load the file back onto the minidisc?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't get it back on there at all because it wasn't my minidisc, i have a mac and i don't have soundstage or whatever the hell the stupid program was that did this in the 1st place. i just got the file from my friend over slsk and thought i might be able to find a way to convert it into something workable. the only way i can figure it is by playing it thru soundstage on a pc coz i don't believe they do it for macs anyway, rerecording the whole damned thing, then playing that back thru a griffin imic and recoding it as an MP3 which is one hell of a longwinded way round what should be a simple thing to do.

stelfox, Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

problem with the atrac format, not only is it proprietary, but they don't even support all operating systems. The long winded way might be your only option. I always used to take the laptop down to gigs and record on that. My soundman ex housemate swears by a nicam stereo vhs recorder. 4 hour tapes and good dynamic range.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

this is totally infuriating... why the hell would they market something as an *easy* way of getting minidisc files to computer and then make it so bollocking useless and complicated to rectify!? and tom bleeding cruise is on the telly. this is close to the worst saturday night ever!

one month passes...
so the ipod mini doesn't come with an ac adapter. does that mean that if i want to recharge it (duh), i have to buy a separate adapter for $25?

also what happens if you want to sync your ipod with itunes but you have more songs on itunes than can fit on your ipod?

no. you can charge off of your computer

You have to set up iTunes to "choose" which "songs" to "put" on your
"iPod".

do you charge it off your computer via usb or something else?

"thanks"!

Am, When you've plugged your ipod into the computer, a little logo will show up in Itunes. Click on it to see a list of everything currently on your ipod. You can click on songs (multiple by doing the usual ctrl button maneuver) and delete them that way. You can also go into your Itunes library and click on multiple songs and drag them over to your ipod logo. Ta da! More songs on your ipod, but not all from the library.

so what's the best case for an ipod mini? or do i not really need a case?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

iPod mini is the worst of the iPods!
really? but there are only really two ipods. (shuffle doesn't count.) i don't want to spend like $300 on the regular ipod.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Dude its like $70 more for SO MUCH MORE room! The shuffle is nice because of the form factor.

Are you affiliated with an educational institution at all or know someone who is? You could try to get the nice education discount.

it's actually like $100 more. i did get the edumacation discount, but i still got t he ipod mini, because that's really stretching my budget as it is. and i can keep switching stuff in and out of it anyway.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:42 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean i only did this because my fucking discman broke and it seems dumb to get a new discman. but the ipod shuffle thing is definitely not what i want.

No, the mini is the chick ipod. Seriously, Apple caught on to what Sony has known forever, girls like small & cute electronics. If I look at the electronics that my girl geek friends own, and the ones that my guy geek friends own, there is essentially no overlap outside of powerbooks.

Anyway, I own a shuffle- that + Shure e3cs = happy. I don't need the display to tell me what the current song is because I generally already know what ever songs I've put onto it, or I can wait until I get home to look up one if it's bugging me. It depends on what you listen to, I think... I have a smallish set of music that I want to listen to when I'm walking to or from work, which is when I usually use the Shuffle.

two female friends recently bought green ipod minis, so that's what i bought. i am such a girl.

Embrace your inner chick ;)

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

hehe i'll do more than embrace her...

i have no idea what this means.

My sis boought an ipod mini (silver) so for her birthday I got her a itunes gift certificate and the ipod mini necklace thingy.

two years pass...

1 GB shuffle now at 49 bucks. Might get one.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago) link

recommend me an mp3 player?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 15:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Doubtless.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link

The 80GB iPod Classic is now only like $250. WTF?!?!

I'm totally upgrading soon.

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Why get an 80?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah I've been sort of hoping my creaking iPod will finally give up the ghost so I can justify getting one of those now-ludicrously-cheap 80gig ones.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Hell, it's only a hundred bucks more for the 160 one. That's what I've got, and it's still only about half full.

I was hoping that my 60 would get bumped to an 80 during my last AppleCare debacle but alas no.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

my 80 gb is all full and since i use my ipod as a way of backing up my mp3s im sort of considering investing in the 160

max, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I just got the 80 Classic to replace a old and broken mini and I LOVE the new one. I only have about 16GB of music total so I'm swimming in leftover storage space...enough to put movies on it for traveling (if I ever go anywhere).

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Laurel, I can rip/give you iPod compat movies.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

You a bro, jw. I hope you mean ninja ones.

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

geez, a 8 gb nano is $200 and an 80 gb ipod is $250! that's ridiculous. (how i wish the shuffle had a screen! it's quite cheap now, but i KNOW it would drive me up the wall.)

I have like 3 ripped already

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Maria, that's exactly why I got the 80 even tho it's way more than I "need". It didn't make financial sense to pay $200 for 8GB!

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I might have bought the iPod touch if I were you Laurel.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Really? Cos I wd have had to pay $400 for the 16GB which would BARELY hold all my stuff (if even) and be full immediately. I don't need the touch functions that badly.

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess it would have given me minimal internet access b/c I do not have own computer...but I didn't have the dough anyway.

Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 17:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Yea, fuck that dude. I think the iPod touch is a turd.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I have about 16GB of music & stuff but am resigned to getting something smaller because I want to be able to run with it, and this is less likely to do harm to something with flash memory than a regular ipod with a hard drive. The nanos definitely give you less memory for your money though.

Maria, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i fucking LOVE my itouch. one of the things i love doing is standing in some street and watching who has unprotected internet connection. lol am i sad or what? it's been great breastfeeding and checking my mail. i was never much of an ipod user, but ever since getting the itouch, i've been listening to more music. typing on it is okay but a bit of a hassle.

stevienixed, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago) link

eleven years pass...

Those were the days - now every one has an mp3 player in their earlobe

Shuffle replaced radio but radio gives new options and shuffle only shuffles options.

Found a 6th gen iPod Nano when packing my stuff to move house, looking forward to hearing what's on it when I'll put it on my ancient 30-pin dock connector JBL speaker

My brother found my ipod mini recently - I wonder if it still has the movie "Shock Treatment" on it

incidentally I still use an ipod touch from 2007 - I think it was the first touch. Still works great!
