Oh holy crap. I can't decide between Bioshock and Zelda PH.

Trayce, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:07 (sixteen years ago) link

BTW I havent played Every Extend Extra Extreme but it looks pretty awesome, its one of those ultra-trippy puzzle games.

Trayce, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:08 (sixteen years ago) link

most awesomeness per dollar (thus best) has gotta be fire pro.

adam, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Super Mario Galaxy, but if I owned a 360 I'd be pretty tempted by both Orange Box and Bioshock.

John Justen, Thursday, 13 December 2007 01:35 (sixteen years ago) link

gone for Zelda, but I haven't played any of the Xbox. Surprised not to see Pro Evolution?

darraghmac, Thursday, 13 December 2007 10:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Every Extend Extra Extreme: It's one of those trippy actiony games as mentioned above, except instead of shooting the other geometrical shapes, you blow yourself up near them... and try to cause chain reactions of their explosions hitting other explosions. Also, the music is omportant, as you get bigger explosions/points if you explode on the beat. It can also find the best of your own MP3s and build levels for them. I got billions of points playing that Robyn single, and an old Knife song.

Artonelico
It's a somewhat interesting jRPG for the PS2... I forget what its deal was, but it looks kinda like xenogers and has a pretty cool fighting system, and a lot of "item synthesis" stuff

War Tech: Senko no Ronde
It's like Virtual On, but top down, and more like a bullet hell shmup like ikaruga or something. If you don't know what I'm tlaking about you probably wouldn't like it :)

Bullet Witch
I dunno this game really.

EXIT
Forks I think you would love this game. Very stylish puzzle-platformer where you are a guy named "Mr. ESC" who needs to rescue people from burning/flooding/etc buildings.

Will M., Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link

there was really a game called grim grimoire?

Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

besides the crossword game, the only games i played from that list are portal and rock band, exactly one time each. they were fun, though.

Jordan, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, grim grimoire was an RTS fr the ps2 that looked like if disgaea was a 2d platformer. hard ot explain, fun ot play.

Will M., Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Hahaha Halo 3 is listed twice.

Bullet Witch is a third person shooter where you can also cast crazy weather spells, hence "Bullet Witch."

GrimGrimoire also has a story that's a cross between Groundhog Day and Harry Potter. It's by Vanillaware, who also did Odin Sphere.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I only joined the modern world in late 2007 by finally purchasing a Wii, so I've played exactly three of the games above: Super Mario Galaxy, Desktop TD, and Puzzle Quest.

Puzzle Quest was a lot of fun for awhile, but after about 20 hours of play the lack of anything else to do made me put it away for good.

Desktop TD was fun until you read a guide showing you how to most efficiently win.

Super Mario Galaxy - yaywoo!

Z S, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Desktop TD was fun until you read a guide showing you how to most efficiently win.

I watched a few videos and yet I still can't beat Medium. I'm just really terrible at it or something. I'm not upgrading the right stuff at the right time.

polyphonic, Thursday, 13 December 2007 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i wont vote until i get a chance to play the orange box, but so far mario is winning by a landslide

webber, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm the anti webber, I've voted for the Orange Box but I won't be getting around to playing mario unti next year, and I'm expecting to adore it.

Peggle was a close second for me. Puzzle Quest, Picross DS and Bioshock were all great too.

OMG WAIT A MINUTE, WHERE THE FUCK IS CRYSIS???

JimD, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:36 (sixteen years ago) link

is crysis out yet?

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

POKEMONS HELLO

Abbott, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Pokemons need a kick up the arse srsly.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:35 (sixteen years ago) link

i would have been far more likely to vote for metroid prime if i had been able to beat the final boss

remy bean, Thursday, 20 December 2007 00:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I never beat the final boss in Banjo-Kazooie but it was still a great game. IMO you don't play a game just to get to the ending.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 20 December 2007 02:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Crysis has been out about a month and it's very very good.

JimD, Thursday, 20 December 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 31 December 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

OK I got to play a bunch of these (Portal, Halo 3, Mario Galaxy, NYT Crosswords, Zelda PH, Space Giraffe, Beautiful Katamari demo, Peggle). I vote for... Mario Galaxy!

abanana, Monday, 31 December 2007 04:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Call of duty 4: CS killer.

jim, Monday, 31 December 2007 04:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Whatever the results of the poll, one has to admit, it was an awfully good year for video games. A lot of quality releases, but also a respectable amount of variety. Just from the list at the top - there's probably a year's worth of games I haven't had the chance to play yet (in particular, Mass Effect, God of War II, Uncharted and Persona 3 - all of which I hope to find time for in 2008 - as well as finding the time to finish Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda Phantom Hourglass and the Metroid Prime, perhaps). The scary thing is, 2008 looks like it may be at least just as good...

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I was going to try Mario Galaxy, but we couldn't find the disc at my buddy's house.

kingfish, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 21:30 (sixteen years ago) link

having now had the opportunity to play portal, i have to say it was robbed.

webber, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 03:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I am amused that a digital format of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle outranks Halo 3.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 05:38 (sixteen years ago) link

It has over 1000 puzzles and is awesome.

abanana, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 06:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Not arguing! Just amused.
I want a "BELIEVE" commercial for the NYT Crossword DS...

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago) link

two years pass...

I am weirdly tempted to repoll this in ballot format.
I will not do it, but I'm tempted.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 18:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Do it! I will vote and then complain when genres I don't play rate highly. I promise it'll be good times.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

chris nibbs (cozen), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't do it.

I WILL DO THIS IF YOU WOULD LIKE

god 2007 ruled

The controls are janky (Will M.), Thursday, 11 February 2010 10:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I still haven't played Mario Galaxy, I should get around to that.

JimD, Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:34 (fourteen years ago) link

decade poll shurely

take me to your lemur (ledge), Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Holy holy what a good year for games. I still haven't played Mario Galaxy or even seen it played. Or in fact any game on Wii besides the minigames games.

Decade poll is a great idea if someone wants to do the work

antexit, Thursday, 11 February 2010 12:23 (fourteen years ago) link

decade poll makes no sense imo-- if you are going to take a massive xsection i would rather see "generation" poll-- ie. best of the ps2/xbox/gamecube era or something. Decades are arbitrary enough for movies, films, etc but for games it makes NO sense.

The controls are janky (Will M.), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I would totally vote in best of platform awards.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:38 (fourteen years ago) link

oh yes, me too

3:16 (jjjusten), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:47 (fourteen years ago) link

feel free to take a fifteen minute break before starting that one up for us forks

3:16 (jjjusten), Friday, 12 February 2010 00:48 (fourteen years ago) link

dude, let me get a job first and then we can talk.
also, with this much work, i really wanna get at least fifty voters so it feels like this has the weight of groupthink behind it. Same amount of work if it's twenty or fifty!

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 February 2010 05:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Seriously forks if you have any tips you should email me and I can run a best-of PS2 or something!

The controls are janky (Will M.), Friday, 12 February 2010 06:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I also could run one.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Friday, 12 February 2010 06:36 (fourteen years ago) link

How would cross-platform games work however? Should it just be an all-encompassing sixth-generation home console best-of (DC, GC, PS2, XBOX)? Or is that too much of a clusterfuck? I think individual ones still makes the most sense, it's crazy when you think about how many games back then were on one console or the other vs. now where almost everything is on both!

Paradise can't mean straddling felled treetrunks in dentalfloss thongs (Will M.), Friday, 12 February 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I think going system-by-system would make the most sense; sometimes multi-platform games are better on one system than any others (Killer 7 & Beyond Good and Evil on GC come to mind) and would receive the most appropriate number of votes that way.

/no cobo (jamescobo), Friday, 12 February 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

guys, go for it!
I would recommend breaking up the work so you have one person collating votes, organizing the entries and putting them on ilx (i might be willing to do this part; one person pulling ilx commentary, one person pulling youtubes, one person pulling links and one person pulling photos.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 February 2010 19:03 (fourteen years ago) link

ooh system-by-system would be really fun! though the ps2 is still getting releases...
