Ha, weird, I am backwards, headphones-wise -- if the mix is going to be unbalanced at all, I usually prefer to have trebly stuff on the right, and smoother, lower tones on the left.

Well, that's basically the classic "audience perspective vs. player perspective" mixing debate, altough that usually has to do with drum kits.

But pianos, xylophones, marimbas, etc., have the bass on the left and treble on the right. I think mixing that way, from the player's perspective, may be more common generally, even though it seems counterintuitive, but that's just been my observation. I think people used to musical instruments tend to be accustomed to going low to high from left to right.

I goes back to the classical orchestra instrument fan, violins, violas, cellos, basses, presumably this goes back further (although interestingly strings almost always go the other way). Whether whether western humans preferred this and set their orchestras like this or our minds have been set by the orchestras, we will probably never know.

I was a wind player so I've only ever been oblique to pianos/marimbas/drums or facing them, I mix as an audience member, not a dude who is used to playing on stereo things

I should also mention when setting up a stereo delay I seem to find myself preferring that the shorter delay be on the left channel

“It is sad that the most widely known experiment (in which six younger subjects turned their newfound fearless attentions toward death, and purportedly unleashed their physical strength and determination upon each other in a congress of erotic strangulation [2]) has cast a dark cloud over the otherwise useful tool, erroneously compelling otherwise intelligent persons -- from both scientific and artistic circles -- to avoid the machine altogether.”
