piscesboy, yeah i didnt really like bed, but the first song on it is pretty rockin. ill give it another try. you really ought to get the juliana's pony album

Ron, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, bed was not as bad as i thought. without all the high expectations from when it was new. search: these lyrics thats it, im staying home
dont even try to make me go
if you put on your leather pants
yankee boy in a cowboy hat
do you even know what you're doing?

apparently you think it's pretty cool
but that bad boy style is wearing you
did you learn how to herd cattle in prep school?
could you just pretend you don't know me?

take off those leather pants!
you can't go out like that!
you really don't look 'phat'
i can't be seen with a man wearing leather pants

look into my eyes where the truth is
do you realize you look stupid?
get rid of those leather pants!

i can't go out like that!
you really don't look phat
i can't get down with a yankee in a cowboy hat

she is fab.

I love BECOME WHAT YOU ARE LP. Blake Babies' GOD SAVE THE BLAKE BABIES or whatever it's called is surprisingly good too.

She is quite tasty but also talented.

I too fell in love with the girl on the front of Hey Babe, as recent posts might ahve indicated. Also, the one who claimed to be a virgin at 26 or whatever. Then some sleazeball came along and said 'Hmm - I knew Juliana Hatfield before she was a virgin'.

Anyway, the only record of hers I've really liked was a BBC radio session acoustic version of 'My Darling'.

N., Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know Hey Babe. I only know BWYA. She looks good on that too.

Ron, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

sigh. sigh.

Just played Hey Babe after maybe 8 years. And, after some heavy duty brain-adjustment during the first song to *that* indie- guitar sound, I was surprised to learn it's still very good. Lovely melodies, clever lyrics. Time to hit the second hand cd-shops.

Glenn McDonald to thread!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the cover of the I See You (E)P.

Andy K, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Have you seen her on the inside of the "Its a Shame About Ray" album? All your dreams will come crashing down around you.

houseboy, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

My 3 favorite Juliana albums in order: 1-Become what you are (that 90's college rock sound that I love so) 2-Beautiful Creature (her most "adult contemporary" album, but features some of her strongest songs) 3-Only Everything (the rare album where the second half is considerably better than the first. There's a terrific bootleg recorded in Ballard, WA 9/17/93 that features most of her best songs from her first 2 albums.

Mark M, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark m: how can i hook up with this ballard show? is there anything you are in search of? email me

Ron, Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yay mark im listening to this ballard show right now. its fun. she's hitting the b-sides pretty hard, which is grate. i just realized the best thing ever about juliana is that she wrote a lyric which contains the phrase 'stoopid poopid'. also she is a spazzy singer, which i love

The "greatest hits" tracklisting is pitiful.

I think I only like the Hatfield tracks no one else does - "Breeders," "Let's Get Married," "Swan Song," "I Want To Want You."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

I love 'I Want To Want You', along with 'Live It Up' off of Bed.

The good stuff of Beautiful Creature is SO GOOD. search songs 1-3, 6, and 11. esp.#11,'Hotels'. I always liked Only Everything too, plus the first too.

The Blake Babies reunion was maybe 1/3 super, search 1, 4, 5, and 10.

Wow, I never realized I was so into Juliana Hatfield... who knew?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:42 (twenty years ago) link

Search: "Out There," "Trying Not to Think About It," "Nothing Ever Happens," and the title track from the forthcoming Feel It, maybe her best song.

Burr (Burr), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

i don't like 'want to want you' very much but i think all those other songs are great, milo. i would have to agree that the g.h. album isn't so hot. i haven't listened to it really after the initial once or twice through, although i should check out the 'new' songs on it again.

does anybody have a lead on a clean copy of this 'god's foot' (?) thing???

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 21 June 2004 07:36 (nineteen years ago) link

and nobody has mentioned "Everybody loves me, but you" which is where it all stared (for me).

Ah mems. Newcastlte Riverside club. She was too loud (well, the band were, she was way too quiet herself). The last one I got was the 'hairy' one. One of my first purchases from CDNow back in the day. Dawn put her hand in the car glovebox, brushed against the CD and pulled her hand out very quick. "Is that meant to be....?" she asked. "Yeah, Probably" said I.

di, Sunday, 6 February 2005 03:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been listening to a bootleg copy of 'God's Foot' a lot lately. search 'Mountains of Love', 'Perfection', 'Eye 2 Eye', a few others. Tne sound quality is lousy, but it's fine by me.. it sounds that much more illicit and rare, which probably lets me gloss over some of the flaws. Honestly, though, 'Perfection' might be her best rock single ever.

The new album from last summer isn't that exciting.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:04 (nineteen years ago) link

in honor of this thread, I just put on in exile deo.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I've unconsciously ended up with every album she ever released. I never meant to be a Hatfield completist, but now I guess I have to keep it up. (this is helped by their omipresence in discount used bins, I think. ditto Yo La Tengo)

The first four tracks on Bed are so great: "Down On Me," "I Want To Want You," "Swan Song," "Sneaking Around."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:44 (nineteen years ago) link

milo, me too, and i also blame the fact that each and every album was readily avaliable for $6-$9 used around town.

there were a few tracks on exile that i really liked, but also some i quite disliked. i'll give it a go tomorrow and summarize.

haha, the cover of hey babe.

the strange angle, that lost faraway look in her eyes, the shot up her nostrils, those pert lips. yeah, i probably fell in love with this circa 1995. nice picture on the back of the case as well

the record still holds up nicely. a great number of hooks, some quite touching vocal deliveries, and generally, some pretty nice songs. 'the lights' is an old favourite and is still very pretty.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 16 April 2007 12:55 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah she was deft in her time. although the "become what you are" picture, like on the reverse of the cover, gets me even more than the hey babe cover, i have to say.

Luckily glenn ended up meeting a nice girl and got married and trained his sights on Japan (which is far enough away that the female recording artists there didn't get quite so nervous at the prospect of his "reviews").

dlp9001, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Nice timing, I've been listening to "I Want To Want You" over and over again lately. Not for any emotional or nostalgic reason, I just love the way she delivers "What a bad judge of character you were."

This is the person who did that horrible tearjerking song "my sister", right?

Rich Smörgasbord, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 09:05 (seventeen years ago) link

'my sister' is cool, man!

what's really quite creepy about that first journal entry (bed review) is when you realise he doesn't actually know her. i'm glad i've never developed an infatuation with someone so intangible

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:48 (seventeen years ago) link

My Sister does rock, but i never thought of it as a tearjerker. how good is the supermodel song before it though

"five thousand dollars a day is what my baby gets paid, for bein just another pretty face"

yeah, she's good at making those matter-of-fact bleak observations

Charlie Howard, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

lol thanks for the delayed response ; ) she is, sometimes too poignantly perhaps

that one in particular, though, is a good hook

Surmounter, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:35 (sixteen years ago) link

haha i'd been looking for this thread for ages.

yes, when she's not about melodic guitar hooks, she's adept at lyrical ones. :)

i'm watching some of her older videos on youtube now... 'i see you', 'my sister', 'for the birds'. all those

Charlie Howard, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

For the birds is sweet =P

i got no idols = lyrical hook

I saw this on her website. Anyone seen these so-called perverted posts?

"Someone purporting to be ‘Juliana Hatfield’ is disseminating disturbing email messages, postings, and e-cards throughout the Internet.
"Please ignore any and all unsolicited anti-Semitic, racist/fascist, or sexually perverted email or e-cards sent by ‘Juliana Hatfield.’ It is not coming from me.
"This has, sadly, been going on for quite some time. I thought that if I ignored the problem, or at least didn’t acknowledge it publicly, the perpetrator would eventually get this sickness out of his/her system and move on to happier, healthier, more productive pursuits. I was wrong.
"And now I feel I must issue this disclaimer, for the benefit of any of you who may yet be targeted: Please don’t open any unsolicited mail from
‘Juliana Hatfield’ if you don’t know me. Please don’t even look at this stuff.
It’s ugly and kind of heartbreaking."

I had no idea until a few days ago she was even recording, never mind releasing, an album with Nada Surf's Matthew Caws. The fifteen-year-old in me is feeling a lot of feelings on first impressions.

boxedjoy, Monday, 25 November 2013 21:48 (ten years ago) link

I forgot how totally cool she was and then I reminded myself by listening to her cover of "Raisans" today -- but I can't remember whether it was her or someone who sounded like her who sang a cover of Yeh Yeh.

I was way into her in the '90s. I'm surprised to discover that I might be even more into her '90s material now than I was back in the day. Only Everything was particularly slept on by me. What an album.

Always liked her, but just now wallowing in nostalgia and connecting with my inner '90s indie rocker by listening to the Blake Babies' Sunburn and then Hey Babe, Become What You Are, and Only Everything. What a great run that is. If she had come up in the '60s she would've been a famous Brill Building hitmaker.

1988-1990 was such an interesting period, when the American Underground of the mid-'80s had made its impact and grunge was bubbling up, and everyone was influenced by similar things but taking those influences off in different directions.
