the last suffocation album was pretty good. but i think immolation are making better albums these days. as far as oldhead nydm bands go.

i liked the recent obituary album too. like i said, i'm pretty easy to please when it comes to death metal.

scott seward, Saturday, 29 December 2007 02:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm kinda like Scott though in that while I was looking for Souls I ran across the new Severe Torture and decided to rock that instead and I'm perfectly happy with how things turned out

which one is souls to deny? i've heard human waste i think. there was another i wanted to hear, it had a yellowish cover or something haha

I went to college with that dude

he's kind of a drag but nobody knows his metal history like him

i dig anus.com reviews. there is nothing like them on earth.

i like the new severe torture a bunch!

scott seward, Saturday, 29 December 2007 03:10 (sixteen years ago) link

to answer yr question though Souls is the "comeback" album, they hadn't made a record in 6 years, didn't have a regular bassist, all that. So it feels a little uncertain, but that's kind of how I like stuff. It's got these druggy slow breakdowns and stuff. the self-titled one a year or two later was back to pickin'-up-change mosh-or-die DM.

J0hn D., Saturday, 29 December 2007 03:11 (sixteen years ago) link

fuck dudes this track "countless villains" on the new severe torture is the SHIT

J0hn D., Saturday, 29 December 2007 03:16 (sixteen years ago) link

i still think this dm list is one of the better 2007 lists:

http://piris-metalopolis.blogspot.com/2007/12/top-50-recommended-death-metal-releases.html

i don't know if i heard 50 death metal albums this year that i thought were great, but it definitely wasn't the dud year that some people think it was.

scott seward, Saturday, 29 December 2007 03:19 (sixteen years ago) link

ok yeah i saw a video for sugery of impalement (from 'souls..' i think) recently. i was impressed with how they still kept the same formula, same brutal sound

My death metal evening update: I ended up listening to Gorguts The Erosion of Sanity in the dark last night. Fucking awesome, awesome record. Everybody goes all nuts on Obscura and I like it too but tEoS has the evil fucking atmosphere. And riffs, riffs, riffs.

J0hn D., Saturday, 29 December 2007 11:55 (sixteen years ago) link

i think from wisdom to hate gets obscured by, um, obscura too. it's another great record all on its own. obscura is just its own genre, so it's hard for some people to see the other stuff clearly.

Now there's a man after my own heart.

Immolation are my favorite death metal band. They came by here three times in a year and a half and I missed them, though I did get to see them in Tallahassee in 1999.

I've had songs from the first EP going through my head lately. These guys sounded like the end of the world when they first came out. For a good six months to a year they were the most obnoxious thing I had ever heard.

the new album ('pinnacle of bedlam') is great!

sure is. I especially love "eminent wrath" but the whole thing is rock solid.

dug that interview btw.

Effigy is still fucking great. Still suffers from Morrisoundism, but goddamn these dudes rule.

Ha, same with me, though in my case this was circa 2013. Now I could spend all day listening to Effigy and Pierced From Within.

jmm, Monday, 13 July 2015 21:05 (eight years ago) link

I agree with the poster from 7 years ago about the quality of Souls to Deny. It isn't as heavy as Pierced (nothing is) and doesn't have the living breathing in-the-momentness of Effigy, but the songs have more identity and memorability than anything else in Suffo's career. Tepid production aside, I love that album.

Behooooooooooooooooooold! THE TOMES OF ACRIMONY!

Pinnacle from a couple years ago was also in that same league of brutal vs accessible. The two between Souls and Pinnacle kind of blur together for me though.

Devilock, Monday, 13 July 2015 23:44 (eight years ago) link

I'm going to have to rebuy Souls and Pierced and then slowly venture into their modern stuff. I'm way behind.

not rly into the later shift of vocals to recognizable language, prefer effigy's cookie monster gurgles

Frank's gonna actually be at the show this Thursday. and now they have Kevin Talley on drums?

should be fun nonetheless.

That's the lineup I saw last year. Fantastic show.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 02:09 (eight years ago) link

they have always been amazing every time I have seen them and their frontman's goombah between song banter has always been totally boneheaded and alienating every time I have seen them.

But they once played my screamed request for "Infecting the Crypts" so, I gotta give it up. Suffocation rules!

the tune was space, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 04:26 (eight years ago) link

I saw them last year and I didn't enjoy myself at all. but it wasn't them - I was so drunk by the time the show began everything was a blur.

and I was having trouble figuring out why things seemed 'off'. like the frontman didn't look like the guy I thought was the frontman, even though I saw Terrence Hobbs on guitar/etc. realized only last week it's cos Ricky Myers of Disgorge was on vocals and he looks nothing like Mullen.

I will still admit I am not into the last two Suffo albums. they're not *bad* but they don't sound like Suffocation to me, even though they're obviously tech death. (I will still rep for Souls to Deny and the s/t, though).

but if I get my dosage of the classics I'll be golden.

the wounds from the Deicide show (which was two weeks ago) haven't quite healed yet, so I might need my health ID card handy.

on first listen to the new one, might be my fav since the s/t. i was less warm towards the previous two Suffocation albums but this one brings back some of the missing savagery and more breakdownz.

on five or six listens I fuckin love the new one. maybe even my fav post-reunion alb but I need some time to arrive at that.

I never get tired of Effigy. Tech death is better when it's also brutal like this. Less so when it's the paper thin shit like Necrophagist

just got an Effigy pic disc. i never tire of listening to this album. or PIerced. the others are great but this is the one I can never leave.

plus they slayed so much the last time I saw them ten years ago back in January.

I almost never say this but I'd love to hear a remix of Effigy. It's an album I dearly love but I've never been a fan of Scott Burns' Swimmer's Ear production

btw they have another live alb coming out

new live album unnecessary but a nice little time capsule of Frank's last tour on stage.

his banter with his Long Island accent kills me

this band basically birthed the new school of cloney brutal death and deathcore bands, didn't they?

I mean they also inspired a buncha good bands too but I feel like all of that lineage comes from their breakdowns which were used the right way but bands that are inspired often take the wrong things

just realized today that while I'm laser-focused on Frank's vocals on Breeding the Spawn and Effigy, I've tuned them out on Pierced because - they sound different! I had noticed a vocal pattern of his on "Thrones of Blood" that I wasn't familiar with because he kind of sits more in the background there.

very odd - idk if it was just the production or if he was using diff technique but he was more intelligible, the growl a little less deep and a little more phlegmatic.
