I don't dare risk the wrath of Ned (actually I wouldn't have picked you as a Janet fan)

Hmmm, I've never told you about the perfection of the instrumental break into soaring vocal break on "When I Think of You," then.

you're a man of depth and nuance, sir (and OTM re: that break)

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:45 (seventeen years ago) link

And Mary Davis' voice just does it for me in a way Janet's never could.

I can completely understand this.

Your son can hang out with my son any time he wants.

Hearsay is probably one of my 10 favorite records; in vocal prowess Mr. O'Neal and Ms Davis cut Ms Jackson from here to Thursday, no question.

But, bloody hell, I heard "Let's Wait Awhile" at a bar last Thursday and loved it – sweet, not mawkish.

Yes'm. Anyway, all the Jam/Lewis stuff turns up plenty of wonderfulness so I'm not a Janet-only partisan, trust me.

Funny how time flies

Plus WHERE IS THE LOVE FOR HOWARD JOHNSON?

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 21 August 2006 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Classic just for "When I Think of You," never mind the rest of it (which is pretty damn good too).

Adam Harrison-Friday (AdamFriday), Monday, 21 August 2006 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I just relistened to "The Pleasure Principle" and "Control." Their music's involutions and expansions honor the affirmative platitudes of Janet's lyrics (on the latter at least; Monte Moir wrote the former).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 August 2006 23:53 (seventeen years ago) link

A great album! I preferred Janet when she was still a little chubby.

ugh i'm so glad this album has gotten due cred, it's mind-boggling every time

You Can Be Mine =P

Pleasure principle = yes

THIS IS A STORY ABOUT CONTROL

lex pretend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link

luv it so

Surmounter, Saturday, 12 May 2007 15:09 (sixteen years ago) link

A great album although I prefer "Rhythm Nation", which I feel is a bit more fully realized musically (plus it doesn't have anything as downright awful as "Nasty" on it)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 12 May 2007 17:26 (sixteen years ago) link

wow. Nasty is definitely a highlight for me!

Surmounter, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

In honor of this thread I blasted "The Pleasure Principle (Long Summer Mix)" (with trumpet by Herb Alpert!) on my way home.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

=P

so weather appropriate too

Surmounter, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

And then there's "Encore" by Cheryl Lynn, probably my favorite J&L produced track

I wish I liked this song.

i feel this way about the short vocal break in You Can Be Mine, followed by the lush instrumental break accented with electric guitar

Surmounter, Friday, 29 June 2007 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha, listening to the album now and it just so happens You Can Be Mine is playing as I read your post!

I keep trying to appreciate this album as much as Rhythm Nation, but...it's just not quite there. ALMOST, mind. Almost there.

Bimble, Saturday, 30 June 2007 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Also I decided I don't like it when she says "This is wild/I swear" and stuff like that. It's like she's just saying "don't I have the best musicians backing me up here?" I'd rather her figure out something to do on her own while they play, rather than calling attention to them like that. I don't remember her doing that kind of stuff on Rhythm Nation. Maybe by then, she didn't feel the need.

I don't like the guitar sound on You Can Be Mine, either...dare I say it? It actually sounds dated in a bad way.

But in the end, these are small quibbles, I mean...Rhythm Nation is just a bit better, that's all.

HA i was just reading that last post as the guitar break in You Can Be Mine came on,fucking nice

um yeah i just heard the "This is wild"

but i don't think she's calling attention to the musicians as much as doing her trademark janet giggle/spoken word/snippits of random words thing. she does it a lot. altho you're right she just said "fellas help me out" - oh right and "can i hear that line one more time?"

i actually love that stuff, i just find it cute of her.

i will forever keep bumping this thread out of respect because this album transports me to a state of indescribable elation.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link

pleasure principle is sooooooooooO LUSH AND FUCKING PLEASURABLE. =)!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I need to post its long remix.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

janet is the only one who can: make me clap; make me smile in the way she smiles in her videos when she's singing in that sexy way she does it; make me dance around in underwear at least five times a week.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

um yes u really do

Surmounter, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I might be alone in preferring mid90s Janet (Janet, Velvet Rope) to Control/Rhythm Nation...

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:35 (sixteen years ago) link

more influential production-and-sound-wise than THRILLER. discuss.

pisces, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

nope, my bf found out one of his coworkers was a big fan and he asked what his favorite album was. he nodded assuredly and said "janet"

i just got janet and the velvet rope. i've only listened to janet twice, not all the way thru. so far it's been amazing. i have to let it sink in. the break with the opera singing is slightly absurd in the best way possible ever ever ever.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i haven't listened to thriller which i kno is really wrong

Surmounter, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll email it to you when I get home from work, Surm.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:38 (sixteen years ago) link

sweeeeet. also my good friend LOVES the velvet rope, prefers it i would say.

first record i ever played on my original pair of new Technics SL-1200 turntables in 88! so fucking classic

Bimble, Sunday, 23 September 2007 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

God you people just don't understand...I've really got total JANET FEVER like never before last weekend and this one. But only Control & Rhythm Nation, the rest is shite. I have toyed with the idea of Velvet Rope but I'm afraid of it, I think. Maybe I'll change my mind later. Her first album from '82 is dull as ditchwater, I'm afraid, despite the great last song "Come Give Your Love To Me". The album often sounds like a very pale imitation of Michael circa Off The Wall. Well she was young, I guess we'll cut her a break.

I watched the entire videos from Control & Rhythm Nation last night and then today I rented the Rhythm Nation video which has a bit of an interview with her where these two black ladies start crying when they meet her because they dropped out of high school and when they heard her song off RN called "The Knowledge" they decided to go back to school.

But never mind, my main focus right now is on the Control album because I have neglected it in favor of Rhythm Nation for a little too long.

It's hard for me to believe that if someone hadn't blared "Nasty" out of a car on the highway a few months ago, this entire odyssey into the Janet Jackson past would have escaped me entirely. She would have merely been a footnote in my musical memory. Something I just watched on TV after school in the late 80s.

My faves are still "Come Back To Me" & "Let's Wait Awhile" at least as far as videos are concerned, but I need to get away from the videos now and listen to the albums more because you miss songs by just concentrating on the videos.

It still kills me that Paula fucking Abdul is in her early videos ("What Have You Done For Me Lately?") This is insane because Paula only made it big in my senior year of high school (not that I was ever a big fan).

The real sleeper on Control for me is that last track - "Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)"

Had enough? Bimble ain't done with Janet yet. Next up is POLLS muthafucka.

Bimble, Sunday, 23 September 2007 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

is mid 80's janet jackson having a moment or what? these two records were my favorites back when they came out, i didn't play them for years until this summer, suddenly they're my favorite music again!

daria-g, Sunday, 23 September 2007 04:39 (sixteen years ago) link

If I'm not mistaken, Paula Abdul was doing Janet's choreography at that time, hence.

The Reverend, Sunday, 23 September 2007 10:36 (sixteen years ago) link

yes, she was.

daria-g, Sunday, 23 September 2007 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, that's true. I'd forgotten that.

Bimble, Sunday, 23 September 2007 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

needless to say, Control and Rhythm Nation have ruled my stereo for the better part of this past year.

and Bimble, man, you're missing out on some CRAZY tracks -- the slower numbers you mentioned are great but dude, the beat driven numbers are really, really, REALLY KILLER.

Surmounter, Monday, 24 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh I know they are! Don't get me wrong. I don't know why I'm so drawn to the slower ones as faves, though.

if someone were talking like a goblin over the "pleasure principle" instrumental it would be a skinny puppy track

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 February 2023 22:07 (one year ago) link

If a Britisher dude were shouting over "Rhythm Nation" it would be a Meat Beat Manifesto track.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 February 2023 22:19 (one year ago) link

If we could just leave these perfect tracks alone, it would be nice
